DEER PARK, Texas — A fire burning at a petrochemical storage facility in suburban Houston could burn for two more days as firefighters take a defensive posture and let the blaze burn through fuel stored in tanks at the site, officials said Monday.Ray Russell, spokesman for Channel Industries Mutual Aid, which is helping in the response, said firefighters have had "pretty good success controlling the fire" and stopping it from spreading to other tanks. The tanks that are burning contain gas, oil and chemicals, according to Intercontinental Terminals Company, which owns the facility.In one tank, Russell said, crews are working to pump out a flammable liquid to deprive the fire of fuel. Even with that effort, the fire could burn until Wednesday, he said.A column of black smoke rose from the plant, but the city of Deer Park and ITC said tests indicated the air was not dangerous as of late Monday morning. Schools in Deer Park and La Porte were shut down as testing continues.The cause of the fire remains under investigation.Asked whether the result of air-quality tests could be released to the media, ITC spokeswoman Alice Richardson said they had already been provided to city officials and she would check on whether she could share them with reporters.A private air monitoring contractor declared the readings "favorable," Deer Park's Office of Emergency Management said just before noon (1 p.m. ET). DETROIT — Detroit Police Chief James Craig said they are looking for a serial killer and rapist that is operating on the city's east side.According to police, the chief said they have been in the middle of the investigation which started several months ago, beginning with an incident March 19 where the female victim was totally disrobed. Chief Craig said that on May 24, on the east side of Detroit, there was another death that was believed to be connected to the March 19 incident. CINCINNATI — When Irina Chamberlain went online to pay her student loans, she was surprised to learn that she's dead.Chamberlain — who moves, talks and isn't decomposing — said she was declared dead by the Social Security Administration in early December. Since then, she's had trouble accessing her bank accounts and making payments. "With my busy life, I'm always running, doing something," she said. "I actually thought, 'Maybe I actually died and did not realize that.' I reached for my dog and I was like, 'Can I touch them? Am I still alive, or what's going on?'"The mistake led Chamberlain to call the Social Security office, which she said had her on hold for an hour. "She said, 'Well, what's more important — to lose money or prove that you're alive?' I said both are important, but who pays me for losing a day of work," Chamberlain said.Since Chamberlain was declared dead, she hasn't been able to make deposits or withdrawls, or pay any bills. The process of being declared alive is also taking a lot of her time."I don't have time to prove that I'm alive," she said. "Somebody's mistake should exist like that, you can't [make a] mistake like that, claim somebody dead and don't even check maybe this person is alive."It could take months to get sorted out, according to Deborah Wagner, a senior attorney with Legal Aid."A lot of times it happens if your spouse dies and you have a joint bank account," Wagner said. "They report it, and for some reason the names get confused and it gets reported on both Social Security numbers."Chamberlain said the only death in her family was her father-in-law back in October."He's a male, completely different life and Social Security number, but same last name," Chamberlain said. "But everybody else in my family is alive, except me."Chamberlain is one of thousands of people this happens to each year. About 2.8 million deaths are reported to the Social Security Administration each year. A spokesperson said less than a third of a percent are corrected.In a statement, the Social Security Administration said it "recognizes erroneous death cases are very sensitive because of financial hardship and distress," and that it works to correct cases like this immediately.Wagner said Legal Aid gets about two of these cases a year."You have nothing," she said. "They've frozen your bank accounts, you can't use credit cards."It used to happen even more often, according to Mike Walters. He used to work as a claims representative with Social Security, and is now Pro Seniors."It used to be that Social Security would take phone calls and take somebody's benefits based on a phone call from a family member who said, 'My mother passed away,'" Walters said.Now, there are more checks and balances in place to avoid something like Chamberlain's situation."There were serious problems with resurrecting somebody on the computer system if they got terminated," Walters said.But why does something like this happen in the first place? Walters said the error could have had to do with the fact that Medicare used to have Social Security numbers on Medicare cards. "The Medicare number would be that spouse's Social Security number followed by a letter," he said. "Hospitals would report death in a patient, and maybe left off that letter at the end of the claim number."There are a lot of reasons why it could've happened. Levels of brown fat are known to be high in children but recent findings on the presence of brown fat in adults has restored hope to use them as targets to treat obesity."Brown fat works in a different way to other fat in your body and produces heat by burning sugar and fat, often in response to cold, said professor Michael Symonds, from the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, who co-directed the study."Increasing its activity improves blood sugar control as well as improving blood lipid levels and the extra calories burnt help with weight loss. However, until now, no one has found an acceptable way to stimulate its activity in humans."The scientists started by testing out coffee on stem cells to see if it would stimulate brown fat. Once they found the right dose, they moved on to humans to see if the results were similar.The team used a thermal imaging technique on four men and five women to trace the brown fat reserves and see how it produced heat."From our previous work, we knew that brown fat is mainly located in the neck region, so we were able to image someone straight after they had a drink to see if the brown fat got hotter," Symonds said.So will drinking a cup of coffee help you lose weight, as well as get out of bed?The study only involved nine people and the research is still at a very early stage.
