SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A gaping hole in an Allied Gardens hillside has many residents worried of a potential catastrophe.Outside of John and Sandy Knox’s bedroom window is a massive sinkhole that has already swallowed up their tree. The couple fears their home could be next.A broken-down drain pipe that is 50 feet deep and 60 feet wide is believed to be the cause of the hole.On Tuesday, ABC 10News spotted City of San Diego crews taking measurements and assessing the sinkhole.John Knox said he owns his mobile home, but a property management company owns the land it sits on and might be on the hook for fixing it.According to Knox, the management company has ignored his calls regarding the hole.ABC 10News learned the city is now investigating. 755

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A grant from the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce is easing the pain of the pandemic and keeping businesses afloat.Captain Bill Wilkerson, the owner of Malihini Sportfishing, has fished since he was old enough to cast.Wilkerson said at the age of seven, he and his grandmother would walk to the bus stop and ride two hours to get to Venice Beach."We used to fish on Venice Pier sun up to sun down," he said smiling.He said his grandmother was trying to protect him, by taking him out of the L.A. neighborhood where they lived.Wilkerson said he had friends in elementary and middle school she knew were getting into trouble, "I went back 10, 15 years ago to see if I could locate some of those friends, and most of them were gone due to gangs and drugs and things like that."He said he would never forget the time she took him to Santa Monica to go fishing. It was an extra 45 minutes on the bus, but it was worth it, he said. While under the pier, he said he saw a boat pull up, let people off, take others on, and leave.He asked his grandmother what they were doing. She said, "do you want to go fishing on a boat?"She knew the captain and the next weekend he hosted Wilkerson. There was no going back to fishing on the pier after that trip.Wilkerson named the captains he worked for over the years and said he was thankful most for Raymond Sobeick, who he said taught him how to fish and opened him up to the opportunity to be a business owner. "My dad growing up told me that I would have to work 10 times harder than anybody else, just because of the color of my skin," he said pausing. "It's true."He said it was only true at the beginning of launching his business.After Wilkerson worked hard, bought the Malihini in 2006, and launched his business, he says from there it wasn't smooth sailing."In 2011, I was diagnosed with cancer, a brain tumor... In 2017, the boat struck a whale."The accident creating a mountain of debt."We started 2020 strong and then COVID-19 happened," he said.Wilkerson said they applied for every grant and loan available and didn't get anything. Then, he heard about the Black Business Relief Grant Fund through ABC 10News. He was awarded a ,000 grant and supported with tools and mentors who guided him on pivoting his business plan."They really want to see Black and minority and Asian businesses succeed ... To me, it's been invaluable. I mean, to see that there are doors that can be opened for a guy who owns a fishing boat who can't get financing because of whatever," he chuckled.Wilkerson said the grant paid for fuel and parts. He said they're hoping to get a loan to carry them through the next few months. He added that his faith has gotten him through many challenges."He's never let us starve, he's always made sure we have food, we had water. Our bills, for the most part, were paid," he said choked up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 91-year-old woman died and a younger woman was injured in a crash in Clairemont Friday. The crash happened about 11:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of Balboa Avenue, near Mt. Alifan Drive, authorities said.The older woman was driving south on Mt. Alifan in a gray Toyota Camry. Police said the Camry and a car driven by a 32-year-old woman collided in the intersection of Balboa Ave.Wreckage was strewn across the Auto Zone parking lot at 6085 Balboa Ave.The 91-year-old woman, who has not been identified, died at the scene. The younger woman suffered minor scrapes and bruises, police said.The cause of the collision is unknown. Police said it was possible a car may have run a red light, leading to the crash.Balboa Avenue is closed in both directions from the 6000 block (Mt. Alifan Dr.) to 6600 block (Mt. Albertine Ave.) near Lindbergh/Schweitzer Elementary School. Police believe the road will reopen about 3 p.m. 973

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chula Vista World War II veteran celebrated the 100th birthday of a lifetime, with help from hundreds of strangers.The celebration was made possible through Arthur Brook, a 9-year-old dedicated to preserving the stories of WWII veterans. He's been interviewing veterans living at the Veterans Home of California, Chula Vista"Since they were at least in their 90's, to be registered in the military during WWII, they wouldn't be here for much longer," said Arthur.When Arthur learned Army veteran Edwin Schwimmer was turning 100 in September, he wanted to give him a special gift. "We quickly made a decision to make it the most special birthday in a long time!" the 9-year-old added.Arthur put out a call requesting birthday cards and received hundreds from around the country. "So many people thought to send him cards, I just wanted to thank them all, who sent cards to Edwin Schwimmer to thank him for his service to our country," said Arthur. Schwimmer was stunned at the number of people who took the time to write him a letter. "There's no words I can express how I feel," said Schwimmer, "I'm the luckiest guy in the world, the luckiest guy in the world."Arthur says he'll continue his mission to interview as many WWII veterans as possible. 1277

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California lawmaker is planning to move forward on a housing bill that would eliminate hyper low-density zoning near transit and job centers.Senate Bill 50 aims to clear the way for apartment buildings and affordable housing in those locations so more people can live near transit and near where they work, proponents say.California State Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco tells 10News, in January SB 50 will come back before the Senate, and he intends to move it forward.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Zoning rules partially responsible for low housing supply, report says"California has a massive housing shortage – which threatens our economy, environment, and diversity – and state action is essential to solve this major problem," Wiener said in a statement.While they wait for action at the state level, some San Diego community groups are pushing for local lawmakers to move forward with their version, dubbed SD 50."We are still working in these neighborhoods to try and change those communities," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) San Diego.Flores said the City of San Diego needs to end its single-family home zoning regulations. He said housing segregation in San Diego can be tied to the city's zoning policies.RELATED: City Council approves plan to ease San Diego parking regulations for more affordable housing"History shows us that it was created to discriminate against families in San Diego," Flores said. "That's really the crux of this story is that these laws were created to keep people apart, to divide black and white families so they did not live together in the same communities and they've been wildly successful."Flores and other local groups, including NAACP San Diego, Chicano Federation, Urban League of San Diego, and California YIMBY are asking city leaders to craft and pass a local version of Senate Bill 50.In October, the coalition took their initial pitch to members of the city's Land Use and Housing Committee, asking the city to ditch single-family zoning."The immediate benefit is we can see that people who have needs can move into communities where there are more opportunities, and we then reduce the concentration of poverty in communities that have been segregated," Flores said.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: County streamlines process to build granny flatsBut not everyone's sold on the idea coming out of Sacramento.10News spoke with San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry who is against Senate Bill 50. Bry represents District 1, which includes the communities of La Jolla, University City, and Carmel Valley."I'm against SB 50 because I'm against state efforts to control local land use planning," Bry said. "I believe San Diegans should be in control of what happens in our neighborhoods. Furthermore, SB 50 did nothing to guarantee that we would get one more unit of affordable housing."Bry said she's concerned about costs and meeting climate action plans goals, neither of which she found addressed in SB 50.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: Neighbors protest high density housing planBry told 10News she supports single-family zoning and believes if the city is going to bring down the cost of housing, it needs to build more housing in transit corridors."One of the major costs of housing is the fees," Bry said. "Fees are what pay for the infrastructure because of Prop 13. The state can pick up that cost of infrastructure. There was nothing in SB 50 to mandate that."If San Diego updated its zoning policies, it wouldn't be alone.City leaders in Minneapolis passed "Minneapolis 2040" which aims to increase affordable housing and racial disparities in housing.Ricardo Flores said he believes it's time for politicians to make San Diego more inclusive."If you own a single-family home on your lot and you want to keep that you should be allowed to keep it, but if you like me and are interested in building a couple extra units for mom and dad to move into or to rent it out to help pay for a mortgage you should be allowed to do that," Flores said.In a statement to 10News, San Diego City Council member and Land Use and Housing Committee member Scott Sherman wrote, "A recent study noted that 47 percent of housing costs are due to government red tape and regulation. Since taking office, I have worked to reform land use codes and streamline the permitting process to make homebuilding less expensive. I appreciate the efforts of SD50 and look forward to diving into the details of their proposal." 4568
