ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are investigating an elaborate phone scam that cost an Encinitas woman ,400.Lauren Kennedy says she was driving to work Wednesday morning when she received a phone call around 8:30 a.m. She says she had just gotten off the phone with her mother when all of a sudden she was calling her back.But when she answered, it wasn’t her mother’s voice.“It was a man’s voice telling me he had abducted my mother and he was going to kill her if I didn't do exactly as he told me,” Kennedy said.Kennedy said it became so real when she heard her mother’s voice on the other line.“At that point, that’s when I knew it was real," she said. "I heard her in the background, and I thought for sure that they had taken her.”The man on the other line directed her to go to the nearest grocery store and put money into Money Pak cards. Then they demanded the card numbers over the phone and ordered her to destroy the cards afterward.They told her to cut up the cards and email them photo evidence that they had been destroyed.“At that time he hung up and never called me back,” she explained. “So within a minute or two, I called my mom’s phone and at that time, she answered.”That’s when Kennedy’s realized she had fallen victim to an elaborate phone scam.The Sheriff’s Department says the scammers used a “spoofing device” to make it look like the phone was made from her mother’s phone number.The scammers also called Kennedy’s’ mother in the middle of the fake ransom call. They got her worked up by saying they had her daughter.“They just wanted her to be scared and sound scared. All I heard was her saying my name. I still can't believe it," Kennedy said. “I think their whole intention with calling her was to have her voice in the background while they were asking me to do whatever they wanted me to do." Kennedy says she not sure how the scammers got her information or her mother’s. She says she is always careful with her information and weary of scams.“I don't answer phone calls I don't recognize,” she said. “I don't answer blocked numbers. I let people leave voicemails to determine if it’s legit or not. I feel like the public needs to know about this (scam) because if I can fall for this, anybody can fall for this.”In an email, to 10News the Sheriff’s Department says people should hang up when they get phone calls like this and should immediately call law enforcement.Kennedy says that's what her mother did when she go the call, but for her  - it’s easier said than done.“This was life or death," she said. ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) -- Friends and family celebrated the survival of 14-year-old Keane Webre-Hayes at a community paddle-out event. The teenager was attacked by a great white shark at Beacon's Beach one year ago this month. The line between life and death is so thin for Keane."People come up to me and say, 'hey what's that from'?" Keane said as he pointed at the large scars on this left cheek, ear, and neck. Last September, the then 13-year-old was bitten by a great white shark while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach. "I swam 70 yards to a kayak with basically no arm," Keane said. He screamed for help toward a few kayakers in the distance. That is when he met Matthew Ephron, who helped him get to shore. "He did most of the work, and we just got him in so that he wouldn't be out there forever," Ephron said. Doctors said Keane lost half of the blood in his body. But 1,000 stitches later, the boy survived. And for the last year, doctors, trainers, therapists, and teachers helped Keane find his new normal."We honestly couldn't have gone through it without the support of the community," Keane's mother, Ellie Hayes, said. "The hugs, the love, the gifts, the support."So to say thank you, Keane's family hosted a paddle-out at Moon Light State Beach to honor his survival. "Without them, I would not be able to move my arm," Keane said. "I probably would not be who I am today without them."Keane has made incredible strides. From being bedridden for weeks, he now plays in a club beach volleyball team. Family and friends said Saturday's paddle-out is a celebration of life and proof of Keane's incredible resilience. "I definitely want people to know that I can do things, and also if I can do that, you can do that if you put your mind to it," Keane said. Local surf-art legend Andy Davis also attended the event and gave Keane a custom painting featuring a man on a surfboard in Keane's favorite color, pink. 1937

Even with millions of unemployed Americans amid the worst pandemic to hit the US in a century, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has nearly fully recovered from its record-high levels in February.For the first time since Feb. 20, the Dow Jones closed above 29,000 on Wednesday, finishing the day at 29,100.The Dow Jones has historically had a 7% growth rate a year, and it’s possible the Dow could still finish the year on track. That comes after the Dow bottomed out in March at 18,591.While the Dow Jones has seen a recovery, many Americans are still feeling the pinch from the coronavirus. The unemployment rate remains above 10%, which is more than double the pre-pandemic unemployment rate.The economic news has continued to be dire as major companies, such as MGM and United Airlines are planning on furloughing or laying off employees.Whether the economic woes on Main Street eventually affect Wall Street remains to be seen, but President Donald Trump took credit on Wednesday for the Dow Jones’ figures. 1019

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- One week after a training accident that ended in the death of racehorse Bobby Abu Dhabi, Victor Espinoza is opening up about his recovery.Espinoza, a Hall of Fame jockey, suffered a fractured vertebra when he was thrown from the horse after it went into apparent cardiac arrest in Del Mar. The four-year-old horse died.RELATED: Injured jockey Victor Espinoza to miss rest of Del Mar meet"I was just working my normal routine and then just...something just happens," Espinoza said. "So it was a bit of a different accident than what (I've had) over the years." The 46-year-old jockey remembers thinking that he might be paralyzed after the July 22 fall. He said his body was numb, and he could only move his right arm. "The first time I ever cry, (was) when I first started moving my right leg, when I got on the ambulance and then by the time I got to the hospital, I started moving my left leg." Scans showed that Espinoza fractured his C3 vertebrae in the accident and had damage to his cerebral artery. Doctors told him that he got lucky.  Espinoza will be in a neck brace for six weeks. He told 10News his goal is to make a full recovery - but right now there is no guarantee that will happen."I can't move my neck at all, and I wear (the brace) and it's hard for me to balance because I can't see down," he said, noting that he still has numbness in his left arm. Right now, it is too soon to know if he will be able to return to racing - a sport in which he earned a Triple Crown on American Pharoah in 2015.  He's also a three time Kentucky Derby winner.When asked if he would be scared to race again he said, " I can't predict the future, how I'm going to feel at that moment."  1807

Events like food and wine tours have come to a halt across the country, prompting organizers to think outside the box. Some events have gone virtual while others are offering them "to go.""Tours just stopped, a hard stop around March 14. My first though was, which is crazy, is that it wasn't even me but what are my restaurants going to do because without them, there is no food tour," says Cristina McCarter, the owner of City Tasting Tours in Memphis, Tennessee.When the COVID-19 pandemic prompted shelter-in-place restrictions this spring, she made her business virtual, offering food delivery from local restaurants that were on her tasting tour. But when restaurants opened back up, she had to think of a new way to keep her business alive."I had to think of something else. So, I thought about, okay, maybe I could do a box and we can deliver some of the food items to people around town," says McCarter.That's when her friend, Lisa Brown, came in to help co-own and invest in their new business idea, City Tasting Box."We really just started to talk instantly about who are the vendors that we want to work with, who represents Memphis and we really just started to pull it off together. What is the experience we want it to be for the consumer?" says Lisa Brown.Brown and McCarter both wanted to create a product that not only showed off the best of Memphis but benefited local restaurants and food artisans. They've now launched two boxes.The first is the "Official Memphis Travel Box" and the second is the "Support Local Box." As for what's in the box? McCarter says, "There's Makeda's cookies in there and we always say you cannot visit Memphis and not have Makeda's cookies. That means you didn't do Memphis right if you didn't get your barbecue and your hot wings."Giving locals and the entire country a taste of town in a convenient "to go" box is a concept shared by others around the country who've had to shut down or adjust their business during the pandemic.At Seattle's Pike Place Market, organizers offer the Pike Box, which includes farmer's market produce delivered to your door without having to visit the market in person. Keeping safe, physical distances but still supporting local businesses, McCarter and Brown said the pandemic and their new business has taught them that they're stronger together, especially when showing off their Memphis pride."We want to push Memphis out to the whole nation and all of the good parts of what makes us who we are," says Brown.Already, the boxes are gaining traction.“It’s been going great. [We've had] really good response so far, mostly from out-of-towners,” McCarter said. “We've gotten a lot of messages from people saying, 'Oh this is such a great idea, we miss Memphis and didn't get a chance to come this year' or, 'We love Memphis and our daughter lives there.'"The two hope to expand their business later this year with specialty Christmas-themed boxes and food boxes featuring foods from other major cities, as well. 3001
