"So it was on our receipt and we did pay for it."Another day, she was billed for Red Bull energy drink."Just recently, on the 8th, a Red Bull was added at the end of the shopping cart," she said. "I guess they were thirsty and needed energy and decided to add on a Red Bull."She wonders how many others she's missed.Angel is executive director of a collection of group homes for the disabled, and orders groceries for them several times a week.It's those disabled clients, she says, who are being ripped off.Complaints increase as orders surgeA recent report in USA Today claims a growing number of customers accuse Instacart shoppers of stealing their groceries.Instacart's Facebook page has a number of complaints of similar mystery charges.It was pretty much inevitable that during a pandemic, with so many shoppers now ordering online and so many more people having to be hired to fulfill those orders, that we would see an increase in complaints.Instacart says orders have surged 300% this year, and it has hired tens of thousands of new shoppers to handle the load.It says each are thoroughly checked out before being hired, but says occasional errors and problems do happen. But It notes that "in these rare instances ... customers should contact Instacart care to have their order refunded."Terri Angel has one other piece of advice: Go over your receipt every time."Absolutely," she said. "Check your bill. Daisy Muniz works at the same elementary school she attended while growing up in Reedley, California. "I moved here from Mexico when I was five, and I've been in Reedley all my life," said Muniz. Reedley is a rural town in central California that has seen better days. Its unemployment level is more than triple the national average, but it's trying to flip the switch on its economic woes and take the city to new heights. "When I came on board, we actually were going through a pretty bad cycle," said city manager Nicole Ziba. "Had an unemployment rate of 33 percent. That means 1 out of every 3 people that you would run into was out of a job and looking for one. That's a pretty dire situation economically." The town is trying to parlay its history with aviation into a bright future above the clouds. If she decides to cash in on her new found skills, she won't have to leave the city limits to train. "They teach us ground school lessons, so everything from we need to learn about the physics of flying, to learning airports, airport diagrams, and then they teach us as well in the simulator class how to actually fly the plane. That gets us ready for when we go to the actual airport and fly the real thing," said Benjamin Jones, a student in the Reedley College. Reedley College has a flight training program offering a less expensive option for prospective aviators. It's all part of the city’s bid to become a pilot pipeline. "You hear a lot of kids, 'I want to be a fireman. I want to be a policeman.' Now that this is here, now they have, 'Oh, we could fly planes? we could be pilots?'" said Muniz. But even if the students don't become pilots, just having the simulator around presents new horizons. The Wauwatosa Police Department announced that a 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection to the mass shooting at Mayfair Mall.Eight people including one teen were shot by a suspect at Mayfair Mall Friday afternoon. All are expected to survive their injuries, according to police.Police speculate that the shooting was not a random act but came after an altercation.During the preliminary investigation, witness accounts identified the suspect as a white man in his 20s or 30s. That has now been changed.No photos or videos of the suspect have been released. Well, at least for the first 31 days of 2020. “I probably spent a thousand bucks every two weeks on booze,” said bartender Adam Farrenkopf. In attempt to save his money and his health, Farrenkopf is participating in what’s called “Dry January” – an international health movement urging people to abstain from alcohol for the first month of the year. “Being a bartender, it’s hard to not drink,” Farrenkopf said. “It’s a testament to myself and we’ll see what happens.” Dry January started a few years ago in the U.K. and quickly spread to the U.S. And it’s catching on fast. A recent study by Nielsen found just over one-fifth of Americans took part in Dry January last year and 83% of those people said they planned on doing it again this year. But is doing this DIY detox right for you?“I think America has a love-hate relationship with alcohol,” said professor Tricia Hudson-Matthew, an addiction specialist with MSU Denver. She says giving up drinking has multiple benefits. “I would say financial, we spend a lot of money on it,” Hudson-Matthew said. “When we’re talking about health wise, we’re talking about better sleeping, better eating, better skin care.” To stay committed while going cold turkey, Hudson-Matthew says to have a plan in place like recruiting friends – or at least let them know what you’re doing. “When you take something away from an individual, you also have to replace it with something,” she said. “If there isn’t something that’s replacing it, then chances are, they are going to relapse and go right back to it.” Back at the bar, not everyone feels they need to give up drinking. “Nope.
