WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is ordering the removal from the Capitol of portraits honoring four previous House speakers who served in the Confederacy.In a letter Thursday to the House clerk, Pelosi directed the immediate removal of portraits depicting these former speakers: Robert Hunter of Virginia, James Orr of South Carolina, and Howell Cobb and Charles Crisp, both of Georgia.Pelosi says the House was unaware of the portraits until an inventory was taken of the chamber’s statues.“We didn't know about this until we were taking inventory of the statues,” she said. “And the curator told us that there were four paintings of speakers in that and the Capitol of the United States four speakers who had served in the Confederacy.”Pelosi says that "there is no room in the hallowed halls of Congress or in any place of honor for memorializing men who embody the violent bigotry and grotesque racism of the Confederacy.″Pelosi says the portraits will be taken down in observance of Juneteenth, a June 19 holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. 1094

VISTA (CNS) - A man who fired a BB gun at an Oceanside business that had put up a sign supporting the Black Lives Matter movement pleaded guilty today to charges of violating civil rights by damaging property and vandalism.Steve Soto, 23, of Carlsbad, is slated to be sentenced Sept. 28 to one year in county jail stemming from the June 4 shooting that shattered a window at Bliss Tea & Treats.Oceanside police Sgt. John McKean said Soto drove by the business, then fired a BB gun out the window of his vehicle.The business had a sign in the window at the time that read: "Black owned, we stand with you," McKean said.The sergeant said surveillance video helped detectives identify the vehicle used in the crime, leading to Soto's arrest on July 15.He also pleaded guilty to an assault charge related to a May 28 incident involving a male victim and a misdemeanor vandalism count related to an unspecified July 4 incident.He was facing a hate crime allegation stemming from the Bliss Tea & Treats shooting and other misdemeanor charges of discharging a BB gun in a grossly negligent manner stemming from unspecified incidents occurring in June and July, but those counts were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. 1232

VISTA (CNS) - An intoxicated driver who struck a homeless man in Oceanside and continued driving for more than a mile, even though the victim's body had gone through her windshield and ended up on the front seat, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in state prison.Esteysi "Stacy" Sanchez, 31, was convicted in April of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run in the death of 69- year-old Jack Ray Tenhulzen.At one point, the sentencing hearing was interrupted because the defendant was sobbing uncontrollably, said Deputy District Attorney Robert Bruce.RELATED: Woman accused of hitting pedestrian, driving with his body in windshield found guiltyThe prosecutor told jurors that Sanchez displayed a conscious disregard for human life when she drove drunk and ran over Tenhulzen on a sidewalk on Mission Road near the state Route 76 bridge the morning of June 27, 2016.The victim went through the windshield and into the passenger seat of her car. Part of one of his legs -- which was severed in the accident -- was found at the back of the car near the rear window.Tenhulzen was hit so hard that he was ripped out of his pants and shoes, authorities said.After a night of drinking, Sanchez left a hotel room the next morning and was told by a male friend that she was too drunk to drive, Bruce told the jury.Defense attorney Herb Weston argued that Sanchez was tired and fell asleep behind the wheel and rode up on the sidewalk, striking Tenhulzen. He said Sanchez "freaked out" when she saw the victim's body in her car and kept driving, finally stopping a block from her home.Sanchez, who lived in Oceanside, still had shards of glass in her hair when she was taken into custody. VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Michael Yager says he was outraged after learning his son, Jacob, bullied multiple classmates at New Smyrna Beach Middle School in Volusia County, Florida. "I figured I would teach him a lesson that would embarrass him and make him feel the way kids feel," he said.Wanting to teach his 13-year-old a lesson the frustrated father took an unorthodox approach. "I wrote the sign, I'm a bully. Honk if you hate bullies." Yager drove his son to nearby State Route 442 and parked him on a busy corner.His son had to hold the sign high."Embarrassed and kind of nervous," Jacob admitted.He says it did not take long for people to start honking.  Some even stopped to talk to father and son."I had Edgewater Police stop by, I had Volusia County Sheriffs. I had a good response from the neighborhood," Jacob's father said.But he acknowledged not everyone agrees with his parenting.
