MADISON, Wis. — Faculty at the University of Wisconsin haved voted to eliminate spring break from the 2020-2021 academic calendar with the hope that doing so will prevent the spread of COVID-19.The University of Wisconsin-Madison Faculty Senate voted 140-7 on the 2021 spring calendar at a meeting Monday. Miami-Dade County, Florida, will close all of its beaches from July 3 through July 7 amid an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Sunshine State, Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez announced on Friday.The closures are for beaches in all cities and unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade. Gimenez said the closures could extend beyond July 7 if need be.Florida has seen a sudden surge of coronavirus cases this week, prompting the state to prohibit bars from serving alcohol on site.Gimenez said firework shows can still go on during the Fourth of July weekend, but must be viewed away from the beach.“Everyone should wear masks inside public establishments and outside if they cannot practice social distancing of at least 6 feet,” Gimenez said in a statement. “I have been seeing too many businesses and people ignoring these lifesaving rules. If people are not going to be responsible and protect themselves and others from this pandemic, then the government is forced to step in and restore common sense to save lives.”Florida Gov. McDonald's announced it's tripling the amount of scholarship money it's offering to its employees to help them get a college degree.Eligible crew members can receive up to ,500 per year and managers can make up to ,000 a year, up from 0 and ,050 respectively.One of the workers who has taken advantage of the program is Jackie Southam from Henderson, Nevada. She's been working at McDonalds for the past 8 years.During that time, she's risen to become a manager, and she's also gotten help from McDonald's to earn a bachelor's degree from Nevada State in biology with a minor in chemistry.With the additional funding increase, she's planning to go back this fall and pursue a master's degree in public health.Her goal is to become an epidemiologist and work for the Centers for Disease Control.She says she's had to pay her entire way through school working two jobs, and the scholarship from McDonald's helped her get through.Right now, UNLV costs around ,100 a semester for state residents, and the College of Southern Nevada is around ,400, plus other costs like books and transportation.McDonald's isn't alone though. Working for several other large companies can also help you get assistance with tuition. Best Buy, Walmart, Verizon, and Bank of America all offer similar types of help.  1333
