SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Navy confirmed Thursday that the suspected Golden State Killer attended and graduated basic training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego.Officials say Joseph DeAngelo, 72, graduated from the training center after attending from October to December of 1964.DeAngelo also served aboard the Boston-class guided-missile cruiser USS Canberra (pictured below) during the Vietnam War.The Naval Training Center closed in 1997 and is now known as Liberty Station. The San Diego's District Attorney is also reexamining cold cases in San Diego that may have links to DeAngelo. TIMELINE: Major events in Golden State killer caseNew information Thursday also helps paint the picture of how authorities were able to catch the man accused of killing at least 12 people and raping at least 45 women.Prosecutors say authorities used genealogical sites to find a DNA match for DeAngelo, according to the Associated Press.Investigators compared the DNA collected from a crime scene of the Golden State killer to online genetic profiles and found a match: A relative of DeAngelo. Investigators didn't go into further detail such as which company they went through. DeAngelo is accused of committing the murders, rapes and more than 120 burglaries in the decade spanning between 1976 and 1986.RELATED: Suspect identified, arrested in East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer caseMost of the crimes happened near Sacramento and in the Bay Area.The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is working to transform Little Italy into an outdoor dining experience. They're streamlining the process for shops and restaurants to serve more customers while promoting social distancing under a new outdoor dining and shopping proposal.Marla Encinas had to close her Little Italy clothing boutique, Valmare, for two months. "We tried to do online selling but its definitely not the same," said Encinas. But, for any business, fewer customers often means less revenue. The city of San Diego is trying to change that. On Thursday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced a proposal to waive fees and fast-track the permit process to bring restaurants and shops outdoors. "They’ll be allowed to maximize outdoor space to allow physical distancing and expand the number of customers they can serve," said Faulconer. "I think its going to be really cool to be outside in the open air and be able to bring out our business," said Encinas. "I would love to bring out summer stuff because the weather is so nice, people are starting to slowly go out."Last Saturday, Little Italy had their first al-fresco dining event on India Street. By adding retail shops in the mix, more businesses will get a much-needed chance to bounce back from Covid-19. "It's going to be very fun," said Encinas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers.When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. But they add if someone refuses to wear one, they’ll look into issuing a citation.So far, 33 MTS employees have tested positive for the coronavirus; 22 have recovered and have returned to work. 1984
