LOS ANGELES, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The California Department of Public Health on Friday announced a recall of hazelnuts which might be contaminated by E. coli bacteria.The department said it ordered the recall after seven people fell sick with E. coli bacteria from eating tainted hazelnuts.The seven illnesses include one in Michigan, three in Minnesota and three in Wisconsin, said Dr. Howard Backer, interim director of the department.The hazelnuts were distributed by DeFranco & Sons, a Los Angeles company, said the department.After being notified of the contamination, the company is voluntarily recalling the nuts, the department said.The hazelnuts affected by the recall were sold under the brand names Sunripe, George Packing, Firestone Farms and Northwest Hazelnut and were distributed nationwide from Nov. 2 to Dec. 22, according to the department.The 50-pound bags of hazelnuts and mixed nuts with hazelnuts may have been repacked or sold from bulk containers, the department said, adding people who had bought the hazelnuts should not eat them.Consumers should check with retailers to determine if their nuts are subject to the recall, and if they are, should discard them, the department added.People who develop symptoms after consuming hazelnuts should seek immediate medical attention, the department suggested.E. coli may cause symptoms that include bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps and dehydration. In extreme cases, patients can suffer potentially life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which includes kidney failure.Young children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to the risk.

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Forty people died in more than 118,000 cases of fire reported across China from February 2 to February 8, as Chinese revelers celebrated the Lunar New Year holiday with fireworks, according to a statement released Tuesday by the country's Ministry of Public Security.The number of cases jumped from the 7,480 fires reported during last year's Spring Festival holiday, which caused losses worth 28.5 million yuan. The incidents also injured 37 people and caused more than 56 million yuan (8.5 million U.S. dollars) in damages, which is almost double the figure from last year.However, this year's losses did not include a case in northeastern Liaoning Province where a five-star hotel in the city of Shenyang was set ablaze by fireworks on February 3.The fire, which caused no casualties, is possibly the country's largest fireworks accident during this year's Spring Festival celebrations.According to the statement, some 260,000 police and fire fighters across the country were mobilized for 24,800 fire control missions.The personnel rescued more than 1,600 people and evacuated tens of thousands. JAKARTA, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Marine scientists will begin conducting an ecological survey in eight locations throughout the resort island in Indonesia's Bali province that could be developed as marine managed areas due to their biodiversity and coral structure, the Jakarta Post quoted an expert as saying on Wednesday.The survey, which will take place from April 29 to May 11, will be carried out by four international scientists and local scientists from universities.Ketut Sarjana Putra, the marine program director with Conservation International Indonesia, said Tuesday the survey was aimed at identifying marine species and their population in each of the eight locations.Selected from 25 potential marine conservation zones, the eight locations are Pulaki and Pemuteran, Lovina, Les Village, Tulamben and Amed, Padangbai, Nusa Penida, Bukit Uluwatu Peninsula and Perancak Beach. "We will go around Bali, starting from Sanur in the south, heading east, then covering the northern and the western areas, then back to the south," Ketut told the daily.The survey is part of a process to build a network of marine protected areas to effectively manage the island's marine and coastal resources to sustain environmental and socioeconomic value and benefits, with priority given to the eight locations.

WASHINGTON, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of young adults in the United States with high blood pressure may be much higher than previously reported, according to a new study by researchers at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill.Researchers analyzed data on more than 14,000 men and women between 24 and 32 years old in 2008 from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, known as Add Health. They found 19 percent had elevated blood pressure, also referred to as hypertension. Only about half of the participants with elevated blood pressure had ever been told by a health-care provider that they had the condition."The findings are significant because they indicate that many young adults are at risk of developing heart disease, but are unaware that they have hypertension," said Quynh Nguyen, a doctoral student at UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health and the study's lead author. Hypertension is a strong risk factor for stroke and coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death for adults in the United States.The findings were published this week in the journal Epidemiology.Kathleen Mullan Harris, Add Health's principal investigator and a co-author of the paper, said the findings were noteworthy because they were from the first nationally representative, field- based study of blood pressure to focus on young adults."The message is clear," said Harris. "Young adults and the medical professionals they visit shouldn't assume they're not old enough to have high blood pressure. This is a condition that leads to chronic illness, premature death and costly medical treatment."
