WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China Yi Gang called for international cooperation here on Saturday to restore global financial stability.     "Our current priority is to enhance international cooperation to prevent further deterioration and spillover of the crisis and restore global economic and financial stability," Yi said.     The deepening and widening of the U.S. financial crisis have triggered a major global slowdown and escalating uncertainty, Yi Gang said in a statement at the 18th meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) held here Saturday.     While the advanced economies have slowed significantly since the U.S. sub-prime crisis, the emerging market economies have maintained robust growth but the deteriorating external environment is putting the resilience of their macroeconomic policies to the test, he said.     The crisis has underscored shortcomings in the financial markets, Yi said. He expressed his hope that the stabilizing measures of the advanced economies will have the positive effect of calming the markets and restoring confidence.     "China is willing to strengthen its cooperation with other countries and, through such joint efforts, we hope global financial stability can be safeguarded," he said.     In line with their status, Yi said, the major reserve currency issuing countries should shoulder the responsibility for preventing further spillovers and minimizing shocks to other economies -- especially to the emerging markets.     To promote balanced and steady global growth over the longer term, efforts should be made to advance structural reforms and increase savings, he pointed out.     The International Monetary Fund -- at the core of the international monetary system -- should carry out its mandate to safeguard global economic and financial stability, he said. The IMFC is the steering committee of the 185-nation lending institution.     Yi also noted that as the impact of the crisis on the real economy is much worse than expected and the recovery more protracted and difficult, the risks of deflation in some countries as a result of the credit crunch have increased significantly.     "It is imperative that the major advanced economies coordinate rapid implementation of bailout packages to avoid deflation and facilitate the global recovery," said Yi.     "However, we should be aware that the injection of liquidity from these emergency measures could be a potential source of inflation in the medium and long term," the deputy governor said.

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) will discuss the amendment or adoption of 18 laws, hear seven work reports and conduct reviews on the implementation of five laws in 2008.     The numbers were disclosed in a work agenda approved after a recent meeting of the chairman and vice chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over by top legislator Wu Bangguo.     The NPC Standing Committee will review draft amendments to 11 laws this year, including the Law on Protection of the Disabled, the Law on Insurance, the Patent Law, the Law on State Compensation, and the Electoral Law.     The draft amendment to the Law on Protection of the Disabled, which includes added details about stable financial support, better medical care and rehabilitation for the disabled, and favorable jobs and tax policies, is likely to be passed within this year, according to the work agenda. However, a date is not yet available. The Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) will discuss the amendment or adoption of 18 laws, hear seven work reports and conduct reviews on the implementation of five laws in 2008.    In 2008, the NPC Standing Committee will also review seven draft laws regulating management of an environment-friendly economy, administrative enforcement, management of state-owned property, food safety, social insurance, protection of intangible cultural heritage, and arbitration of land dispute in rural areas of the country.     The first five draft laws, which had already been heard last year by the 10th NPC Standing Committee, are also likely to be passed in 2008.     Moreover, the 11th NPC Standing Committee will hear another seven reports submitted by the State Council, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate.     The work reports will cover areas ranging from disaster relief and post-disaster reconstruction work, market prices, water pollution, to judicial justice.     In addition, the 11th NPC Standing Committee will also conduct respective inspections of the implementation of the Law on the Protection of Minors, the Law on Employment Contracts, the Law of Farmers' Specialized Cooperatives, the Law on Environmental Impact Assessment, and the Compulsory Education Law.     The focus of this year's NPC Standing Committee's work is to "improve the socialistic legal system with Chinese characteristics", the work agenda said.

BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here on Thursday with ex-French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and urged the French government to work with China to put bilateral relations on a healthy and stable track.     Wen said France was the first Western power to forge diplomatic relations with China, and also the first European Union (EU) member state to set up a comprehensive strategic partnership with China.     China valued its friendship with France, which was fostered by leaders of several generations from both nations and by the two peoples, Wen said. JIUQUAN, Gansu, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao congratulated the country's space scientists and taikonauts on the successful launch of the manned spacecraft Shenzhou-7 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Thursday.     "The successful launch marked the first victory of the Shenzhou-7 mission," Hu told Chinese experts and other work staff at the center after officials declared the spacecraft entered the preset orbit.     "On behalf of the (Communist) Party Central Committee, the State Council and the Central Military Commission, I'd like to extend warm congratulations to all work staff and army forces participating in the mission," said Hu.
