CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - It's art with a message, and the purposeful signs can be found throughout Middle Tennessee.The word "vote" is written on each of Paul Collins' artistic animal signs. The art pieces range in shapes sizes and species. Some are even hidden from plain sight while others can't be missed.It's become quite the scavenger hunt for some on the lookout for these signs."I look around and place them by bus stops," Collins said. "I look for the corners that have 'vote for me' signs because that’s fair game."Collins, an Austin Peay State University art professor, started the project 100 days before election day. Although he only planned to create one a day counting down until November 3, more and more people started requesting the signs and now he's made over 200. The signs can be spotted from Springfield to Nashville to Brentwood and Clarksville.Collins is a New Yorker who moved to Tennessee a decade ago and has used this project to see his new home state."A lot of this is getting to know your city," said Collins. "it’s been great to my family part of this was just a love letter to the city and go to places I haven’t been."Collins is doing all of this out of his own pocket and gives away the signs for free. He says as long as it inspires residents to register and vote, it's a job well done."Vote that's it, it's really simple," Collins said, "Exercise the joy and responsibility of being American and vote."The voter registration deadline is October 5. Congress has been unable to agree on a new stimulus package, and now, a key feature of the last package--the 0 enhanced unemployment benefit--has lapsed.“We definitely anticipate significant increases in the number of families and individuals that will begin to rely on emergency food programs more heavily as a result of the loss of this 0 additional benefit,” said Zanita Tisdale, who works with the Food Bank for New York City.The Food Bank for New York City has provided more than 30 million meals from March to April, just in New York. With many on unemployment losing almost two-thirds of their income now, there will be an even greater need in the city and beyond.“Our network of over 1,000 emergency food providers across 90 percent of the zip codes here in the city are really bracing themselves and making sure they are already bringing in enough resources,” Tisdale added.A study done by Feeding America shows 1 in 6 Americans could now struggle with hunger as a result of the financial hardships caused by the pandemic. That is 54 million Americans, 17 million more people since the start of the pandemic.“About 30 to 40 percent of estimated clients that are coming to food banks have never called a food bank before for help,” said Zuani Villarreal with Feeding America.“The deeper we get into this economic crisis and also taking into consideration that Congress is essentially late in passing new legislation, the more significant our economic challenges are going to be as a nation,” said Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst with Bankrate.com.Hamrick warns if Congress doesn’t act fast to end the lapse of enhanced benefits, not only will more people go hungry, but our economy will take a more troubling hit.“The deeper we get into this lack of action on the part of elected officials, the more it exacerbates the level of uncertainty that we have,’ said Hamrick. “I do believe, and I hope I am not overly optimistic, that both sides will come together.”Currently, the House’s idea for a second package, the HEROES Act, was passed in May. COVID-19 is changing the way we do a lot of things, and one of those things include how you get treatment from a doctor.Craig Nuttall, a nursing professor at Brigham Young University in Provo, says he also works in an emergency room when he's not teaching, and he has found that using a regular stethoscope is almost impossible when he's equipped with personal protective equipment."I’ve been working with Dr. Teng on this digital stethoscope for another project in India and I thought this is the perfect application for this," said Nuttall.Using an existing open-source 3D printed design, Nuttall worked with Chia-Chi Teng, an information technology professor at BYU, to create a digital stethoscope.It works with an app to live stream or record a patient's heartbeat up to a range of 50 feet to a pair of Bluetooth headphones or a speaker.The patient would hold it up to points on their chest under the direction of a doctor or nurse.Teng says another great thing about this is it's easy to put together with just a few parts.He helped develop the 3D printed parts to form a functional, digital stethoscope that costs less than to make.Both professors admit that while digital stethoscopes have been around for some time, they are still expensive, so this is a low-cost way to make them for doctors across the country and even around the world.Nuttall said, "I’ve been using this over the past month as I worked in the emergency department on several patients, so I use it on any patient who has COVID-like symptoms."In addition to protecting healthcare staff, Nuttall said he wants the digital stethoscope to be used for things like telemedicine, treating patients in isolation, and in developing countries that don't have access to healthcare.Instructions on how to build a 3D printed digital stethoscope can be found here and the accompanying Stethogram iOS app is available here.This story originally reported by Jordan Hogan on fox13now.com. 1961

Country singer K.T. Oslin, who hit it big with the 1987 hit “80′s Ladies” and won three Grammy awards, has died. She was 78. Oslin’s friend Robert K. Oermann says she died in suburban Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday morning. He learned of Oslin’s death from her aunt. The cause of death has not been released. Oermann says Oslin had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease and lived in an assisted-living facility since 2016. He said Oslin tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Complaints are growing nationwide about workplace safety issues related to coronavirus. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, has received more than 6,500 nationwide on a federal level since February.One trial lawyer who works in employment law says she expects the number of complains will keep going up.“Where I really think the numbers are going to escalate is in the retaliation world, where employees bring issues to their employers' attention about failing to implement appropriate administrative or engineering controls or social distancing measures and then they feel that they have suffered an adverse employment action as a result of bringing this to their employer's attention,” said trial lawyer Laura Lawless.OSHA recently updated its guidance on COVID-19-related workplace safety. It now suggests wherever possible and feasible employers should require masks at work.This guidance is something Lawless says everyone was waiting on. She says for states or cities that already had a mask mandate it was easier to enforce at work already, but for states that don't have this mandate, it was harder until now.“At least you can now turn to CDC guidance and OSHA guidance as an employer and say look even if you disagree with us for a political reason or personal expression reason, we're following the guidance from agencies that are meant to look out for your health and safety,” said Lawless.Still, there are concerns OSHA isn't going far enough in other areas. One big criticism among employee protective organizations, workers organizations and unions is that OSHA’s guidance on COVID-19 isn't a regulation and doesn't really have any teeth.Virginia and Oregon are two states looking to fill in the gap with their own worker protections.If you see issues in your workplace, the employment lawyer recommends being reasonable in your approach and not getting too emotional in your reaction.
