TEXAS CITY, Texas – About 45 minutes southeast of Houston, the Texas City Independent School District (TCISD) takes school security to a different level than most districts across America."We do think we're the school of 2030," said Mike Matranga.Texas City is just 20 minutes from Santa Fe High School where, two years ago, a gunman killed 10 people “You don’t hire a plumber to fix an IT problem," Matranga said. "You don't hire someone who is an educator to fix real world, mass violence problems." Texas City hired Matranga to overhaul school safety and gave him .5 million to do it.Mantranga is a 12-year Secret Service veteran who's been to dozens of countries and war zones."I would say the pressure is equal if not greater," Mantranga said of his role in Texas City. Classroom doors in schools now have reinforced glass and special locks. The district has hundreds of cameras in its 14 schools. At any point in time, around two-dozen can have facial recognition capabilities. Matranga's security team estimates the software is accurate about seven out of 10 times there is an alert. That's not the only software TCISD has invested in.Teachers have an app to alert the security team of a problem. The entire district can be locked down with a press of a button. Students can report tips online. The district has also invested in software that searches social media and the dark web. The district has also created behavioral profiles of each school. The profiles track issues like the amount of in-school and out-of-school suspensions to give the district a better idea of which students might be at risk. Matranga has faced criticism for his methods. There have been concerns the enhanced security could racially profile, violate privacy, or mis-identify students. “People need to stop being so sensitive," Matranga said. "Facts and data are facts and data. I don’t make them up. We take it and build from it and we identify kids at risk.”"I think that our society has gotten to a point where we are too politically correct where people are getting hurt," he said. But in an era that’s seen a number of high profile school shootings, it’s something Matranga says he won't be sorry about."If you don’t like what we’re doing, education is free. It doesn’t have to be at TCISD," he said. 2303
The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases released concerning information that only 52 percent of adults in the U.S. plan to get vaccinated during the upcoming flu season. The organization said on Thursday that it urges everyone 6 months of age or older to get vaccinated for the flu as soon as possible. "Many people underestimate the severity of flu, yet we know flu causes hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands of deaths each year in the United States," said Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M. Azar, II. "When it comes to protecting people from flu, our best preventive tool is an annual flu vaccine. It can safely prevent flu illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths," added Secretary Azar. Getting vaccinated is especially important for people with chronic health conditions that puts them at higher risk for flu-related complications."Last flu season, approximately 93 percent of adults hospitalized for flu-related complications had at least one underlying medical condition, such as heart or lung disease. Vaccination against flu and pneumococcal disease must be part of disease management for people with chronic health conditions," said Dr. Borden, a preventive cardiology specialist. Those looking for a flu vaccine can click 1291
The leader of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah says Iran's response to its top general's killing has only just begun. He says Iran's missile attacks on bases in Iraq housing U.S. forces were a “slap” to Washington, one that sent a message. Hezbollah is a key Iranian ally. The limited Iranian strikes caused no casualties and appeared to be mainly a show of force. Hezbollah's leader says the final goal is to remove U.S. troops from the region, and that “The alternative ... to leaving vertically is leaving horizontally.” His televised speech was delivered Sunday, a week after Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad. 672

Billboard magazine lauded the opening night concert. “With no exception, the songs have aged well, but how could they fail with the Eagles’ five-part harmony and five guitar-approach…” wrote the magazine. “(Henley’s) voice sounded as strong and pliant as it ever has, easily hitting the highest of notes, while retaining his trademark huskiness." 1890
The Democratic National Committee has chosen Milwaukee as the site of the Democratic National Convention in July 2020, the committee announced Monday after sources confirmed the pick to CNN.The decision means the world of Democratic politics will head to Wisconsin, a state the party failed to win during the 2016 election, to pick their 2020 nominee. The move is a signal that the party believes winning back the upper Midwest could be central to their plans to oust President Donald Trump."This choice is a statement of our values, and I'm thrilled Milwaukee will host the 2020 Democratic National Convention," DNC chairman Tom Perez said. "The Democratic Party is the party of working people, and Milwaukee is a city of working people. We saw in this last election what we can accomplish when we come together, invest, and fight for working people, and that was proven right here in Wisconsin."Milwaukee was 923
