CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Police Department is working to determine what caused a suspect to die more than 12-hours after he was taken into custody following a violent confrontation with officers.Jason Allen Watts, 29, of Spring Valley, was taken into custody Friday just before midnight after two people inside the 7-11 store at 403 Third Avenue reported him to appear under the influence of a substance and was refusing to leave. CVPD Capt. Phil Collum said Watts also called police to report that unknown persons were outside the store and were threatening to shoot him.Arriving officers encountered Watts inside the store but he ran behind the clerk’s counter and failed to comply with officer’s repeated orders, according to Collum."Officers spent time talking to Watts, trying to deescalate the situation to calm him and gain his compliance," Collum said. "As officers were talking to Watts, he punched a cash register on the counter and lifted it as though preparing to throw it at the officers."Collum said officers tried to take Watts into custody using less-lethal tools, including taser and pepper spray.Watts was eventually arrested but paramedics where called to the scene to evaluate him after he "continued to violently resist the officers," Collum said.The suspected was transported by ambulance to Paradise Valley Hospital for treatment where he was deemed suitable for incarceration by medical staff."While being booked into the San Diego County Central Detention Facility, further evaluations indicated Watts may need additional medical treatment," Collum said.Watts was subsequently transported by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center. "Once at UCSD, Watts began suffering medical complications and underwent treatment by medical staff," Collum said.  Watts was pronounced dead at 12:21 p.m. Saturday afternoon.The Chula Vista Police Department’s Crimes of Violence unit is investigating.  The cause of the death is unknown at this time. 2093

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)— The Chula Vista Police department is investigating a home invasion robbery that happened Saturday night on the 1600 block of Claret Cup Drive.80-year-old Don Oder believes he may have had an encounter with one of the suspects.He told 10News he was unloading the bags from his late night shopping trip Saturday and saw a man walk into his garage.“He says 'I’m thirsty. Can I have some water?' So I got him a glass of water,” Oder said. That was around 10:30 p.m. at Oder's home near Camarena Elementary School.At the time, Oder did not know that the person who asked for water could have been a suspect in a home invasion robbery that happened moments prior. “I didn’t put two and two together right away,” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said someone fired a gun at a nearby condo on Claret Cup Drive around the same time.Two people entered and robbed the residents, then ran east. No one was hurt.Looking back now, Oder believes one of suspects may have been the man hiding in his garage.“Pretty obvious that he didn’t want to be seen,” Oder said. Oder describes him as a young, built, clean-cut man.He was surprised at the man’s get-away car.“He said, I’ve called an Uber and it’s going to be here in a few minutes.”Oder stayed with him for a few minutes until the man suddenly ran.Moments later, he and his grandson called police. The next morning, Oder’s son Tim was walking toward the crime scene.Tim Oder said he found a bundle of stuff next to a car along Exploration Falls Drive.“I pulled a hat out, walked a little further, and then I started pulling some gloves, and I thought, oh my God, these are white latex gloves!” Tim Oder said. The water cup and the bundle of items are now with Chula Vista Police, being processed for evidence. The Oders said the fact that one family had two run-ins with an unusual crime in a safe neighborhood is a crazy coincidence.“It seemed so strange, you know?” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said the suspects are still at large and asked the community to be vigilant. 2154

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Authorities have arrested a 44-year-old Casa De Oro man in connection with his husband's murder.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Daniel Scott Jordan was taken into custody Thursday in Reno, Nevada following a joint agency investigation involving San Diego Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force in San Diego, and the USMS Fugitive Task Force in Reno."Jordan was booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility as a Fugitive from Justice and will await extradition to San Diego," said sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver.Investigators said that Jordan's husband, 38-year-old Kevin Powell, an employee of the City of Chula Vista, didn't show up for Aug. 11 "morning meetings and his supervisor became concerned.""Two sergeants with the Chula Vista Police Department went to the employee's home in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in the unincorporated area of La Mesa to check on his welfare," said Seiver.The sergeants discovered Powell's body inside the home in the 4400 block Carmen Drive at around 1 p.m., said Seiver.Seiver said the preliminary cause of death is being withheld for investigative reasons.Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330, after hours at (858) 565-5200. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Three people managed to crawl out of their flipped car after it crashed in Chula Vista.According to Chula Vista Police, the crash happened around 1:00 a.m. on East H Street and Otay Lakes Road.Police say the driver was speeding and lost control on a curve, hit the center divider, then started spinning before the car flipped onto its roof.The driver and the two passengers crawled out of the wreckage just as paramedics and police arrived.Two people were taken to a hospital, and the third person was treated at the scene. All of them are expected to be okay.Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. 644
