SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In just hours, Rady Children's Hospital is expected to get their first shipment of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. It is unclear how many doses the hospital will receive, but once they arrive they will be stored in ultra low temperature freezers, until they are given to hospital staff. FedEx is in charge of making the historic delivery. The hospital's chief operating officer, Dr. Nicholas Holmes, says most of the hospital's staff wants to get the vaccine. It will not be mandated, since it's only approved for emergency use. The first to get the vaccine at the hospital will be front-line healthcare workers in the 1-A category. The category includes physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other staff who have high chances of exposure to the virus. Dr. Holmes says a team at the hospital spent the last four days planning the logistics for distribution. Staff working in the same departments will get the vaccines on a rolling basis, just in case they experience side effects and to prevent an entire department from having to miss work at once. Once the staff receives it's first dose, they'll get a second dose 21 days later. 1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – It's exploding in the wellness industry, but is CBD safe? 10News visited a San Diego lab that tested CBD products for ingredients like pesticides and heavy metals. The results were surprising to lab personnel. Shelby Huffaker is the lead cannabis educator at Torrey Holistics in Sorrento Valley. The licensed dispensary recently conducted its own CBD study to show customers just how unreliable the open market can be. "We collected about a dozen different products from various locations around San Diego and also on the internet," she tells 10News. Torrey Holistics collected samples from places like farmers' markets, grocery stores, and the internet. The company bought CBD products such as lip balms, caramels, creams, and bath bombs, then sent to San Diego's Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs. "It's pretty busy right now with it being harvest time," says David Marelius, Ph.D. He's the co-founder of Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, which tests cannabis and related products. "People are definitely trying to take advantage of the CBD boom right now," he adds. Both CBD and THC come from the cannabis plant, but CBD does not have the psychoactive properties that give you the feeling of being high. CBD received praised for claims of health benefits like reducing anxiety and inflammation. According to Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, none of the CBD samples purchased on the internet by Torrey Holistics had any CBD in them. Dr. Marelius tells 10News that the majority of the overall samples didn't meet their packaging claims. He adds that the products' potencies were off, and one product had almost 70% less CBD in it than what it advertised. Three of the products reportedly failed for pesticides, although the levels were so low that they likely weren't harmful. "It's kind of the wild west out there," says Sally Greenberg with the National Consumers League. Greenberg tells 10News that CBD sellers often exaggerate the benefits of CBD without having the science to back up the claims. "[They say] that they cure cancer or treat Alzheimer's or treat AIDS," she adds. The National Consumers League is advocating for federal oversight from the Food and Drug Administration, which currently doesn't regulate most CBD. In California, the Bureau of Cannabis Control tests CBD that's sold in licensed dispensaries, like Torrey Holistics. "You're going to want to look for a Batch number or UID number. That ensures that we're able to match the testing results with that specific product," says Huffaker. The dispensary is hoping that the lab results will highlight the importance of researching your CBD before buying. "Everything carried in a licensed cannabis store is going to have to be verified [and] vetted by the dispensary [to be sure] it has gone through the necessary testing," adds Huffaker. The state's Bureau of Cannabis Control has a search function on its website where you can see what licensed dispensaries are in your area, or you can search a dispensary to be sure its licensed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are speaking out more than a week after a bloody melee that injured eight guards at Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa. The violence erupted two Sundays ago, around 4 p.m., inside the recreation yard. Corrections officials say there were about 20 inmates in the yard when one of them attacked a guard. His fellow guards rushed to help. In the mayhem that followed, four inmates allegedly assaulted guards. Six of the guards suffered stab wounds.Christina Armstrong's longtime boyfriend, correctional officer Malcolm Billingsley, was in the middle of it."The best way I hear him describe it is a 'melee, just chaos' ... There was so much going on, it was hard for him to pinpoint each action that was taken," said Armstrong.Corrections officials say a warning shot by one of the guards ended the altercation. As the guards were rushed to hospitals, news filtered out to loved ones."It was frightening not knowing for several hours what was going on. It was terrifying," said Armstrong.Billingsley was not stabbed, but suffered a back injury and possible nerve damage to his hand."It's hard for him to everyday things. He can't take care of our son, let alone play with him. He's in a lot of pain," said Armstrong. His fellow guard Roland Milan was stabbed in the face and suffered a brain bleed. His wife Marcy says he's had four plates inserted into his face."A stab wound to the face, to the mouth area. All his upper teeth were knocked out," she said.Sources say in all, eight guards were injured, including one with a fractured bone in his back.Armstrong says because of an ongoing investigation, she can't reveal details of the melee, but says the guards fought hard for their lives and the lives of their fellow guards."They are all heroes. Malcolm went to work that day to carry out his duty as a correctional officer an he became a victim but his strength and courage allowed him to come home a hero," said Armstrong, choking back tears.Corrections officials say the four inmates could face attempted murder charges.Gofundme campaigns have been set up for both Milan and Billingsley to help with expenses. 2147
