ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — A filly broke both front legs at the end of a workout on the main dirt track at Santa Anita and was euthanized on Thursday, becoming the 22nd horse to suffer catastrophic injuries since Dec. 26.Trainer and owner David Bernstein said the 3-year-old filly named Princess Lili B broke down just past the finish line after a half-mile workout.Bernstein told KTLA-TV that Princess Lili B apparently took a step as she changed leads, which led to her breaking her left ankle and then her right ankle. A lead change refers to which set of legs, left or right, leads or advances forward when a horse is galloping."She was always very sound and we've never had a problem with her," Bernstein said in the interview. "We didn't have to train her on any medication. She's just a lovely filly to be around."Bernstein said the filly's exercise rider didn't indicate any problem with the dirt surface."I think it's one of those things that happens, sadly enough," the trainer told KTLA.Bernstein said he wouldn't hesitate to train another horse on Santa Anita's surface again."I know they've done the best job they can possibly do," he said. "They're hired a number of great experts to handle this surface."Santa Anita had reopened its main track for limited workouts on Monday, with horses limited to jogging and galloping while the surface was monitored for any irregularities that may have caused the deaths of 22 horses since the winter meet began on Dec. 26.This week's workouts were the first conducted under the track's new training protocols, which include two veterinarians observing each horse going to and from the track. 1648
As floodwaters started receding in central Texas, authorities discovered the body of a second victim in this week's deluge. The woman's body was found in Llano County, one of the areas inundated by the swollen Llano River, county officials said Wednesday. The woman's name has not been publicly released. On Tuesday, another body was found in the Colorado River in neighboring Burnet County, sheriff's office Capt. Tom Dillard said. Near-record flood levels swamped homes and caused a bridge to collapse. But there's a sliver of good news: While flood warnings are still in effect due to ongoing rain Wednesday, the Llano River's depth has dropped significantly."Right now, the Llano River is at about 12 ? feet, down from just shy of 40 feet yesterday," Llano County Emergency Management Coordinator Ron Anderson said Wednesday. 834
An overnight desk employee working at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo. won’t have any ghost sighting stories to tell family and friends – they’ll have something much better. That’s because that employee came face-to-face with a black bear while working the graveyard shift Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.Video obtained by Scripps affiliate in Denver KMGH-TV shows the unwanted guest wandering around the lobby of the Stanley Hotel, as if to make sure things at the hotel were running according to plan. You can watch the full video in the player above. Luckily, it was so late that no guests were anywhere near the lobby area at the time of the wildlife encounter. The overnight desk employee who shot the video said the bear wandered in and wandered out just as quickly. 811

Are you that insensitive you don’t realise this is not what the majority of people during the worst covid spike yet want to hear? People are going to food banks not private islands.— Peter Frampton (@peterframpton) October 27, 2020 239
