SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is a memorial of candles, notes, and flowers along 4th Avenue near Main Street in Chula Vista.They are in memory of 23-year-old Christina Garcia, who was found dead at a nearby field on Aug. 5th. Chula Vista police say they were called out to 3100 block of Main Street after someone found her body. They say she had an apparent gunshot wound and opened a homicide case.“That afternoon, she wanted to see her daughter and pick up the truck, so it was a brief encounter,” her mother, Lisa Garcia, said. “I expected her to come back, and I wish I took advantage of that situation longer.”Lisa says Christina leaves behind a two-year-old daughter.“I think the saddest thing for me is that her daughter is only going to know her through pictures because she’s so young,” She said. “She’s never going to remember her mom’s touch, her kiss, her voice.”Lisa says her daughter was very likable and smart.“She tested out in the 10th grade and started southwestern college and finished her classes there,” Lisa said. She was also a skilled welder and liked working with her hands. Most recently, they bought a home and worked on remodeling it.“She’s very hands-on, like her mom,” Lisa said, “you know, taking the popcorn ceiling down, remodeling the walls.”She says it’s been tough knowing Christina’s killer has not been caught. Lisa says she has many questions and is cannot find any closure without finding answers.“Was she dumped there? Was she shot there? So my brain is at 100 miles per hour trying to come up with all these scenarios,” she said.Police are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, saying they can even remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers.“There might be information out there that people think is irrelevant,” Lisa said. “But it could be very relevant to law enforcement.” 1845

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This election fired up voters and one Serra Mesa couple was driven by duty to vote for the first time.Anthony Joiner and Justine Gibson are engaged, and invested in this election."We recently became home owners and in the next few years we'll be parents hopefully so we feel like the future is in our hands and we want to be part of the decisions that are happening," Joiner said, with Gibson adding, "wanted to make it count."FIND YOUR POLLING PLACEJoiner said it felt great to cast his ballot for the first time, "I feel accomplished."Joiner and Gibson filled their ballots out in person. "We wanted the full experience," they said laughing."This year more than ever we felt the importance of voting and having our voices heard, this was primarily driven by the current political environment! I feel like the presidential race without a doubt is important, however equally as important are the local races/props that will have a direct impact on our quality of life," Gibson said.They didn't make their decisions in isolation, "we filled out our ballots together [at home]," Joiner said. "We’re pretty much on the same page on all things political and whatnot so it was a little bit easier," Gibson chimed in."We didn’t want our votes to cancel one another out so if we disagreed on something we would talk about it a little bit and see why," Joiner said laughing.Joiner said he hopes the tension fades after the election, "and I really want everyone to just get along really."Both hope for a positive outcome, "no matter what way it goes people just accept it," Joiner said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ridesharing company, Lyft, is donating hundreds of thousands of dollars in ride credits to immigration groups throughout the country, including one in San Diego County. The company made the donation announcement on Monday, donating 0,000, calling the campaign "America is an Idea, Not a Geography." The Minority Humanitarian Foundation in Spring Valley received roughly ,000 in ride credits. The foundation's founder, Mark Lane, says the company's donation is a game changer for his organization. Lane explains that the money previously spent on rides can now go towards other things like food, clothing and other supplies. 10News spoke to multiple Lyft drivers in San Diego who said they wouldn't mind providing rides to migrants, as long as their pay didn't change. A few Lyft users told 10News they don't agree with Lyft's donation but said they would still continue to use the service.During the month of July, Lyft is also matching donations to RAICES up to ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is asking for convalescent plasma donations from patients that have recovered from COVID-19. The plasma is used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19. Although not a cure for the virus, the plasma has proved to be effective for some patients. The blood bank says they are running low on convalescent plasma because requests from hospitals have gone up. The process of donating takes a little more than an hour, including the check-in process. To donate plasma you must have had a positive COVID-19 test, recovered from the virus and be symptom free for 28 days. Donations are by appointment only. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line.
