On Aug. 18, torrential mudslides swallowed an iron mine factory where his sister worked as a cook, burying her.It will take some time for the 16-year-old to heal. His father passed away soon after he was born. And now, the loss of another loved one in a family of four is too much for the introverted 16-year-old to deal with.Yang Zhenmei, a volunteer psychology counselor from the provincial capital Kunming, traveled 930 km to the disaster area to offer help for young people like Yu.She held a brief psychological intervention session with the boy, had patient conservations with him and told him to refrain from aggressive behavior. She also told him to call her if he feels overwhelmed by difficulties.But not many people are as lucky as Yu, who receives the kind of psychological services rarely seen in Litoudi Village, a remote mountainous village in China's southwest Yunnan Province, which borders Myanmar. In a village with a population of a little more than 150, medical resources are scarce.Litoudi Village has only one doctor. Usually, local residents have to travel seven km to be treated in a hospital at the township seat of Puladi.Soon after the mudslides, about 130 doctors and nurses from Gongshan and Fugong Counties rushed to the scene, though none of them had previously received psychological training, except for a handful of doctors who had taken psychology courses back in college.Moreover, the focus of the medical services in the immediate aftermath was on treating the injured, helping rescuers with minor injuries and preventing outbreaks of diseases.Authorities have said 92 people were killed or remain missing following the massive mudslides that swept the village.Torrents of mud and gigantic stones smashed and buried the Yujin Iron Mine and about 10 civilian residences at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Most of the victims were local residents and migrant workers at the Yujin Iron Mine.The government has not released the number of people needing psychological assistance in the village. The village population is about l50, though some 380 relatives of the victim have temporarily settled into 20 tents or villagers' homes. "The number of people suffering psychological wounds and prone to having extreme actions is small. It's a mudslide and the chances of survival are slim. HANGZHOU, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Accompanied by lively Chinese folk tunes, a group of men were playing the tambourine at a party on Saturday evening in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.Those watching could hardly have imagined that the energetic performers,all dressed in red and white costumes, were drug addicts who were also infected with HIV, even if the duplicate short crew cuts they wore somehow provided a hint of their unusual condition.One of the performers, surnamed Yue, said the group had practiced for more than a month to stage the best possible performance at the annual party of the drug rehab center, which fell on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.As China's first drug rehab agency to offer centralized treatment of HIV-infected addicts, the center has helped some 200 addicts beat their drug habits since 2003.Among 2,200 drug users receiving compulsory treatment in the center, 65 have tested positive for HIV.Now, they must obey a regular daily schedule, including three meals, physical exercise, entertainment and skill training that will enable them to earn a living after returning to their regular lives."I've adapted well to the regular life in the center. He was asked to take medicine and be tested for HIV, which could be transmitted through blood.But Wang came back to work three hours later. "If I quit the job, the inmates would've felt discriminated. That would have just added more difficulty to the center's work in the future," he said.In the past, police in the center wore protective clothing, gloves and gauze masks to prevent infection, due to a poor understanding of HIV, thus losing the trust of some inmates."We took off the protective outfits immediately after realizing the problem. CHANGSHA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from a Friday explosion in Changsha City, capital of central China's Hunan Province, has risen to four with 19 people injured, local police said.The explosion went off on the third floor of a branch of Furong District's taxation office on Hengda Road near a downtown residential block at about 4:15 p.m., according to a statement from the city's police.Initial investigations show the explosion was a planned attack, the police said.The police sealed off the building and blocked nearby roads for investigation. All the workers in the building had already evacuated before the police came.Windows of the third floor were all shattered. Large blood stains could been seen on the stairs.The injured have been sent to the hospital.In a separate case in northeast China's Jilin Province, one people was killed and 20 were injured Friday in a series of explosions in a barber's shop in provincial capital Changchun.Four fire fighters were among the injured of the explosions which first blasted at 4:46 p.m, according to a statement from the municipal government.Witnesses say four explosions hit the shop.Fire fighters and workers from a local gas supply company are working at the site.
