SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the second time in as many weeks, several train cars derailed near the downtown San Diego area.The BNSF Railway Company says 19 cars derailed at about 9:40 p.m. Friday while traveling at slow speeds. The train cars were carrying automobiles.The backup continued into Saturday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Green Flash Brewery has been sold to a new investment group, continuing a turbulent start to the year for the San Diego-based brewery.The company announced Monday the finalized sale to the group made up of "individuals with extensive experience" in craft beer and food and beverage industries.In a letter to shareholders published on The Full Pint, CEO Mike Hinkley said the company's lender, Comerica Bank, had "foreclosed on its loans and sold the assets of the company ... to WC IPA LLC."RELATED: National City adopts 'craft beer ordinance' to attract breweriesGreen Flash had reportedly taken on a loan for the development of a Virginia Beach, Va., brewery, which has also closed."As such, the Company no longer owns the Green Flash and Alpine businesses. Comerica Bank is currently conducting a separate process to sell the Virginia Beach brewery," the letter continued.The Virginia brewery closing followed that of Green Flash's Poway barrel-aging facility, Cellar 3, also closing this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eve Ramirez made the difficult decision to close her City Heights taco shop when the coronavirus outbreak hit. She says she did it to protect her eight-month-old son. "I got scared to death," she said. "I was like, you know what, I had my baby boy in January, imagine something were to happen to me. I'm a single mom. I can't risk my baby's life. I immediately shut down without thinking twice."Ramirez, who owns Mexicali Street Tacos, is one of a large number of San Diegans now struggling to pay for basic necessities amid the pandemic. A San Diego Association of Governments study released Thursday says 71% of respondents reported not being able to pay for rent, food, and utilities, while two-thirds said the pandemic has negatively impacted their employment. Ramirez said she has received donated diapers from friends, is on Medi-Cal and is receiving government food allowances. "I had no choice but to apply for help," she said. More than 3,500 San Diego households responded to the survey, conducted via 23 community-based organizations. San Ysidro Health surveyed 300 families about the impact of the virus. Ana Melgoza, the organization's vice president of external affairs, says the virus has hit South Bay families particularly hard. She says many live in overcrowded homes due to high rent, and are forced to work in jobs that require interaction with the public such as in grocery stores and retail. "When you have people literally dying to go to work and provide for their families, we need to make sure health care is a priority for people so that when they do feel sick or are infected they have the right follow up care to manage and survive this deadly virus," Melgoza said. Melgoza said one potential solution is to provide hotel vouchers so people in overcrowded homes can quarantine safely. The study also says 60% of parents with school-aged children reported distance learning challenges during the school year. It calls for exploring new ways to provide direct monetary assistance to families in need, new partnerships between governments and community-based organizations, and new paid training and internship opportunities for underserved areas. 2201

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Foreign ambassadors from around the world made their way to San Diego to visit the border and see how the US handles security Monday. Rolling down a gravel road, at the US-Mexico border, a van carried several foreign ambassadors to the US. The group, part of more than 30, came to San Diego for the State Department’s “Experience America Program.” Monday’s stop – a 14-mile stretch of newly constructed primary and secondary border wall just east of Otay Mesa. As the ambassadors approached, work was being done in the hope of finishing the project by January. “Today we’ve been told how you are protecting the US-Mexico border,” said Javlon Vahobov, Uzbekistan Ambassador to the United States.Like the Uzbekistan Ambassador, this is their first time to California. Border issues top of mind in his home country. “For a country that is located in the heart of central Asia, and surrounded by all 5 central Asian countries- including Afghanistan.”Agents describing how they protect the border, from the construction of the walls, to agents and technology. “Struggling with smuggling of narcotics, fighting trafficking persons. Those issues that have been shared today are very accurate, accurate for the region, for Uzbekistan itself,” said Vahobov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Facing an alarming increase of COVID-19 cases, Governor Gavin Newsom is requiring every county in California to close indoor operations.The roll back targets restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, family entertainment, zoos, museums, and cardrooms."We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order," Newsom said.San Diego County and 29 other counties on the state's monitoring lists are being directed to close indoor operations at fitness centers, worship services, offices for non-critical sections, personal care services, hair salons and barber shops and malls.State officials confirmed 8,358 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday.
