MOSCOW, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Space Forces has re-established contact with a military satellite, Geo-IK-2, which went missing in February, local media reported Friday.According to a spokesman from the Defense Ministry, Interfax news agency said the Space Forces had already received telemetric information from the satellite and collection and analysis of the data were currently underway.After studying the information, the Defense Ministry would make a decision regarding the further use of the satellite, the spokesman said.A Rokot light-class carrier rocket carrying with the Geo-IK-2 satellite blasted off Feb. 1 from Russia's Plesetsk launching site, but placed the satellite in an incorrect orbit. After the launch, the Defense Ministry announced it had lost contact with the Geo-IK-2 and later abandoned the satellite.The Russian Space Forces then grounded launches of all Rokot light-class carrier rockets until the completion of an investigation into the failed launch.

CHENGDU, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Over the crowds of holiday shoppers in China's big stores this Spring Festival lingers an atmosphere of suspicion.With charges of price deception hanging over the big chains of Carrefour and Wal-Mart and local authorities moving to levy fines, many Chinese -- normally averse to be pinching pennies during the Lunar New Year -- are checking their receipts at the tills.The New Year, which falls on Feb. 3 this year, is normally a time of largesse and excess -- all the more reason why many shoppers feel so betrayed.Customers can be seen recording label prices in notebooks or calculating their final bill on their mobile phones as they walk the aisles.At outlets of Carrefour and Wal-Mart in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, the check out queues have grown as customers doublecheck prices at the tills."I would never have imagined global firms would do this intentionally and I have to be cautious," said a woman surnamed Wang, after shopping at a foreign-owned supermarket in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province.With three bulging shopping bags, Wang stood next to the check out to calculate the final bill: "We buy a lot for the New Year celebrations, so I have to be more careful."The official weeklong Spring Festival holiday, which starts Wednesday, is China's closest equivalent to the West's Christmas shopping season, with generous gifts of food, tobacco, liquor and other presents for family and friends.According to the Ministry of Commerce, China's retail sales hit 340 billion yuan (49.8 billion U.S. dollars) during the Spring Festival holiday week last year."The deceptive pricing practices of the two foreign-funded supermarket giants were a total scandal," said Wang. The refund policy would be implemented at Carrefour's 182 outlets in China.The issue is continuing to smoulder on the Internet, with websites asking people to write in with "your experiences of price cheating by the Carrefour."A survey by Sohu, one of China's major web portals, had resulted late Sunday in 8,451 of 9,507 respondents saying they "would not go to Carrefour as it is blacklisted for price cheating.""Carrefour will further strengthen price label management and improve service quality to gain the support and confidence of Chinese customers," said Chen Bo.Carrefour had drawn up short and long-term measures to solve the price label issue, including price inspections, improving and upgrading the price label system, and comprehensive staff training."We will have our special control group conduct frequent and wide-ranging internal price inspections," Chen said.The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner and price regulator, said Wednesday that some Carrefour and Wal-Mart stores in China were involved in deceptive pricing practices.The NDRC ordered local pricing authorities to urge stores to correct their wrongdoing, and pay fines five times the illegal income. It also urged authorities to step up price checks ahead of the Spring Festival.

LOS ANGELES, April 4 (Xinhua) -- A woman's breast milk cells may be used to predict cancer in future research, according to a study published by HealthDay News on Monday.In the study, researchers at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst collected breast milk from 271 women in the United States. All had either undergone a biopsy of the breast to check for cancer, or were scheduled for one.The researchers evaluated breast milk samples from the biopsied and non-biopsied breasts.The researchers first isolated potentially cancerous cells, known as epithelial cells, and then isolated DNA to look for signals that regulate tumor suppresser genes.In the next step, the researchers analyzed three genes among the many known to undergo a process called methylation in breast cancer. Methylation in a specific region of a gene can inhibit or suppress the expression of a gene.For one gene, SFRP1, the average methylation was higher in the biopsied breast, the study found.Among the women whose biopsies detected cancer, average methylation of the RASSF1 gene in the biopsied breast was considerably higher compared to the non-biopsied breast.Among the women whose biopsies detected cancer, average methylation of the RASSF1 gene in the biopsied breast was considerably higher compared to the non-biopsied breast."It looks as if we can use the cells from breast milk to assess breast cancer risk," said Dr. Kathleen Arcaro, an associate professor of veterinary and animal sciences at the university.It's too soon, however, to assess the cancer detection rate associated with breast milk cell examination, she said."We can't say at this point for two reasons," she said. SAN FRANCISCO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Google's Android will become the most popular smartphone operating system worldwide and will account for 49 percent of the market by 2012, IT research and advisory firm Gartner said Thursday.According to Gartner's projections, worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million units in 2011, a 57.7 percent increase from 2010.The company predicts that Apple's iOS will remain the second biggest platform worldwide through 2014 although its share will decrease slightly after 2011, on the assumption that "Apple will be interested in maintaining margins rather than pursuing market share by changing its pricing strategy."Microsoft's Windows, driven by its partnership with Nokia, is expected to move into the mid-tier by the end of 2012 and become the third largest in the worldwide ranking by 2013.Some analysts raised doubts on Gartner's forecasts, saying that its assumption on Apple's price strategy contradicts statements by Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook and the cooperation between Nokia and Microsoft will not have that much of an impact on smartphone market share by 2012.

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday announced it had introduced a regulation to better manage state compensation funds. The regulation was signed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Monday and immediately came into effect then.The regulation is aimed to ensure eligible claimants receive state compensation on time and in full.The regulation means governments at all levels must budget for state compensation payouts each year, and if the actual amount of state compensation payouts exceed what is budgeted for, additional funds must be used.The regulation also standardizes the procedure of applying for state compensation.State compensation refers to government pay outs to citizens for damages it has caused them through infringements of their rights.The State Compensation Law of China took effect since 1995.
