GUANGZHOU, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and the lives of more than one million people were disrupted after Chanthu, the third typhoon of the season, made landfall at the coastal area in south China' s Guangdong Province Thursday noon.Two pedestrians were killed by walls that blew over in strong gales accompanying Chanthu after it went ashore at Wuchuan City at around 1:45 p.m., according to officials at the provincial flood control headquarters.Chanthu also brought torrential rains to several cities in Guangdong.As of 8 p.m., more than 1.35 million people in 20 counties or cities in Guangdong were affected and 2,915 houses collapsed in the rainstorms and strong gales, with economic losses estimated at 2.2 billion yuan (about 324 million U.S. dollars), according to statistics from the headquarters.Photo taken on July 22, 2010 shows fishing boats anchored at Shapa Harbor in Yangjiang City, southern China's Guangdong Province. BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has urged more efforts to be made to ensure this year's grain output, a government statement said Wednesday.A string of policies have been rolled out to support autumn grain production, said the State Council, China's cabinet, in the statement released after an executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday.Autumn grain production is key for China to meet its annual output target as it accounts for 70 percent of the total production.The Ministry of Finance will allocate 1.1 billion yuan (162.4 million U.S. Dollars) to subsidize purchases of fertilizer and pest control, the statement said.Wen urged efforts to restore production in disaster-hit regions at the meeting, after large swathes of farmland have been affected by floods in recent months.Wen also stressed the application of technology and weather forecasting at the meeting.China's summer grain output declined 0.3 percent year on year to 123.1 million tonnes this year, the first fall in seven years, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

TONGHUA, Jilin, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to save 18 miners trapped in a coal mine that flooded due to a deluge that hit the area in northeast China's Jilin Province shortly after midnight Tuesday.More than 2,000 rescuers are pumping water out of the mine through an auxiliary shaft after the entrance of the main shaft collapsed amid rain-triggered floods.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has instructed the local government and other related departments to spare no effort in saving the miners' lives.The accident happened at 12:10 a.m. at Hongyuan Coal Mine in the Erdaojiang District of Tonghua, the third largest city in Jilin, said Zhang Dejun, a spokesman for the city government.He said the miners were working below ground to pull out machinery that had been soaked after days of torrential rain, when the flooding occurred.The mine was near the lower reaches of Daluoquangou River, which is swollen after the catchment received 116.2 millimeters of rain Monday."Time is very pressing," Zhang said.Wang Rulin, governor of Jilin Province, arrived at the scene at noon Tuesday to oversee the rescue. Wang visited the families of the trapped miners to hear rescuers' and experts' reports.The Hongyuan Coal Mine has an annual production capacity of 60,000 tonnes and is a township-owned mine. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.Jilin Province has been battered by heavy rain and floods this summer. At least 85 people have died and 66 are missing after floods over the past two months, according to the provincial government.
