CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CNS) -- Search warrants served at five illegal marijuana dispensaries in Chula Vista, Lakeside and Spring Valley resulted in the arrests of six people on a variety of charges and the seizure of .1 million and 3,000 pounds of marijuana and other drugs.Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department served the warrants at the dispensaries, as well as at homes in Jamul and San Diego and at a storage facility in Spring Valley, according to Sgt. Zheath Sanchez.The warrants followed "numerous community complaints related to unlicensed and illegal dispensaries, some located in residential neighborhoods and near local schools," Sanchez said.Taken into custody were:-- Samir Shoshani, 34, of Jamul and Iisin Mikha, 28, of Michigan, for conspiracy and operating or maintaining a drug house-- Brandon Ceja, 23, of San Diego, for being a felon in possession of a firearm-- Ariel Brown, 23, of Chula Vista, for possession of metal knuckles and possession of marijuana for sale-- Faith Ford, 22, of San Diego for possession of marijuana for saleIn addition to the marijuana, deputies seized marijuana edibles, concentrated cannabis, suspected Psilocybin mushrooms, and 20 firearms, including three semi-automatic rifles, Sanchez said.Two of the illegal dispensaries were located in Spring Valley, one in the 9900 block of Dolores Street and the other in 9500 block of Kenwood Drive.Two others were located in Lakeside, in the 8500 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard and the 900 block of Greenfield Drive in Lakeside.The fifth illegal dispensary was located in Chula Vista in the 300 block of Palomar Street. 1639

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - There were heated moments Wednesday while a group was defending the Christopher Columbus statue at discovery park in Chula Vista.Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann, with members of the Knights of Columbus standing by his side, called for the statue to be left alone."You can't change history," he said. "We should be able to accept all groups, you can't lift one group by destroying another group.""We're here to oppose the removal of the statue," said Rene Trevino, a member of the Knights of Columbus.The statue, which has been in place for nearly three decades, has stirred up controversy in the past.Thursday the city's Human Relations Commission will vote on a resolution to not only remove the statue and change the name of discovery park, but to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day in Chula Vista.Last Columbus Day someone splashed red paint all over the statue, and before that someone plaque set in front of the statue was stolen."It's been a community family park and we've had opponents of Christopher Columbus use violence to vandalize and destroy the park multiple times, costing tax payers," said McCann.Many people have called the meaning behind the statue and the name of the park both painful and offensive.A woman in a car driving by the park Wednesday began shouting, "This is indigenous land, take that statue down!"She went on to say Christopher Columbus was just the beginning of an attempted assassination of Indigenous peoples.The topic caused people to clash at the park."You have these people trying to advocate for an idea that we're sick and tired of living under," said Rafael Bautista, who wants the statue removed.He was then confronted by a man who opposes the removal."What are you living under?" the man asked him. "What are you living under?"At one point Chula Vista Police officers arrived at the park, but things had settled down."Instead of trying to argue over things that happened over 500 years ago, we should be tackling today's issues," said McCann.Raeanne Herrera, a resident of Eastlake and part of the Jicarilla Apache Nation stopped by the park to offer her take."We can right the wrongs that have been done," she said. "That statue is the constant reminder of a beginning of a genocide. They tried, but they didn't."She went on to say change needs to start with education."Native American issues were never taught in school, what was I taught? Oh, that the pilgrims and Indians got together and shared a meal. That's an absolute lie, it was a celebration for a massacre that occurred," she explained.Both groups say they will continue effort to get their way, no matter what City of Chula Vista officials ultimately decide.If Thursday's resolution passes, it will head to the full city council for the final decision. 2818

CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — More and more San Diegans are rushing to get tested for COVID-19, but the wait times at some South Bay locations are hours long.Cars wrapped around the South Chula Vista Library as hundreds of people are waited to be tested for the coronavirus."Testing is just something that we all need to be doing regularly right now," Nancy Maldonado, CEO of the Chicano Federation, said.Recently, the lines and wait times at the county's free testing sites have been getting longer, especially in the South Bay. Maldonado says this area is home to many Hispanic or Latino San Diegans who have front line jobs, with greater exposure to the virus."The other reason is the multi-generational housing, and the lack of housing here in San Diego," Maldonado explained.At its peak, Hispanic and Latinos made up 63% of the County's infection rate, despite only being 34% of the population. Most recent statistics show that number dropped to 57.7%."It's still high, and it's still alarming, but we have seen that number start to come down," Maldonado said.It's thanks to community organizations like the Chicano Foundation and the San Diego Latino Health Coalition that take away the stigma of testing. They offer resources for those who test positive, support for families, and even quarantine locations."There are resources available, so they don't have to stay within that household," Maldonado said.But there are still some obstacles. There have been reports of many people going to Aquatica, not knowing about the "appointment only" system. So they are being turned away."A lot of the county sites are switching to 'appointment only,' but that message isn't getting out fast enough," Maldonado said.That is why it is essential to check online before leaving your home, although making appointments is always recommended."It's up to all of us to make sacrifices right now and do everything we can to bring down this infection rate so we can reopen and so our small businesses don't have to keep suffering," Maldonado said.The county is now working with community partners to set up more testing locations where there is the greatest need. 2159

(KGTV) - Chula Vista boxer Andrea Medina has a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream before she even turns 21.Monday, she'll begin fighting in the Team USA Olypmic Team Trials for boxing, with a chance to go to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo."I feel like this is my time," she says. "It's what I've been working for. It's exciting. I'm ready."Medina has been boxing since she was 5 years old. She's already won 16 National Championships.At the trials, she'll face 7 other women vying for two spots at the Team USA training center in Colorado Springs."I've already fought half of them," she says of the competition. "And I've sparred against the other half. So I know who I'm going up against."Medina's father, Juan, is a former boxer and serves as her trainer. He says she's the favorite to advance out of the double-elimination tournament."I'm biased, but if I were to put a percentage on it, I'd say we have a high 90's percent chance," he says.He also says he's proud of the way his daughter has dedicated her life to the sport and the pursuit of her dream."You have to prioritize. You can't chose other things over boxing," he says. "Boxing is a jealous sport. So you have to pretty much surrender yourself to the sport. She made that choice and now we're here.'In addition to her boxing, Medina is also a full-time student at San Diego State. She's majoring in Criminal Justice.She says representing San Diego and her country in the Olympics would mean "everything.""This has been my dream since I was 8 years old and started competing," she says. (KGTV) - A local program already in some schools asks students to watch for signs of violence among their peers.Mary Papagolos is a therapist who runs the Here Now program for South Bay Community Services. The 6-year-old county-funded program - overseen by San Diego Youth Services - expanded into the South Bay two years ago.This school year, Papagolos's team has gone to some 10 South Bay schools, from grades six-to-12, presenting in classroom settings and asking students to watch for signs of suicide but also violence toward others, or "homicidal ideation."RELATED: San Diego students, schools putting a stop to bullying"Some of the common warning signs we have students look for are isolation, withdrawal ... Also there's a big bullying component ... Those that are being bullied or doing the bullying are maybe struggling with something more serious," said Papagolos.After each presentation, students are handed a response card.
