Whether planning necessary travel in the near term or fantasizing about vacationing in the ever-longer term, you might be curious how the coronavirus pandemic has affected airfare prices. We compared data from our points and miles valuations analysis to determine where and how airfare has changed since this time last year. We looked at the same routes, airlines and booking time frames for both 2019 and 2020, ensuring an apples-to-apples comparison.Although air travel has picked up significantly since the lows in April, the Transportation Security Administration is still reporting about 63% fewer daily screenings than this time last year. Has this drop in air travel demand led to a significant price drop? The short answer is: Yes, prices have fallen.Prices have dropped, but mostly in the short termThe average cost of a domestic round-trip ticket fell 23% in 2020, from 7 in 2019 to 4.This price drop is striking but not surprising given continued low demand. But the trend becomes stronger when breaking out the booking date data, with those made within 15 days dropping much further than bookings made six months in advance. The plot thickens.Airfare for long-term bookings has remained flat year over year. If you book a flight for six months from now, you’re likely to pay roughly the same price as you would have last year. But closer-in bookings, within 15 days, are not only far cheaper than they were in 2019 but also cheaper than long-term bookings. This turns conventional airfare-booking wisdom on its head. Usually, we would recommend booking flights as far ahead as possible to secure low fares. But booking too far in advance is now a recipe for getting fleeced.? Learn more: How to plan holiday travel for maximum flexibility in 2020What’s going on?The management of supply and pricing is usually an exquisitely orchestrated dance in which airlines ensure that every flight is filled to near capacity and every price is competitive. This usually means ramping up prices for nearly full flights at the last minute, when competition becomes stiffer. However, now that demand has dropped and airlines are actually falling over themselves to reduce flight capacity, the game has changed. Airlines are now competing with each other for last-minute bookings, which drives down prices. And they seem to be making up revenue by raising prices on longer-term bookings made by those few brave souls willing to plan in advance. In other words, it’s a buyer’s market for close-in bookings.Of course, these pricing dynamics, like everything this year, are liable to change by the week. If you’re thinking about booking a particular route, set up a price alert on Google Flights or another travel search tool and keep an eye on how the airfare winds are blowing. What do these unusual airfare trends mean for you? Keep it simple: Avoid booking months in advance, set up a price alert and try to shed the normal (and normally smart) habit of avoiding last-minute bookings.More From NerdWalletShould I Pay for My Hotel Using Cash, Points or Both?5 Travel Writers ‘Draft’ Their Favorite Airlines(How) Should I Travel for the Holidays?Sam Kemmis is a writer at NerdWallet. When Sen. John McCain's family announced Friday that he was ending medical treatment?for aggressive brain cancer, the news shook Capitol Hill and prompted support from his Republican and Democratic colleagues alike. But one prominent voice was missing: President Donald Trump's.The White House press office did not react to the news, and when Trump traveled to Ohio in the evening he did not mention the ailing senator in a nearly hour-long speech to Ohio Republicans, which ran a gamut of topics from the death of Mollie Tibbetts to NFL protests to Kanye West.In past months, Trump has frequently referenced McCain's 2017 health care vote on the campaign trail without naming him, drawing the ire of the Arizona Republican's family."One of our wonderful senators said 'thumbs down' at 2 o'clock in the morning," the President said at a campaign event for New York's Rep. Claudia Tenney earlier this month. The senator's daughter, conservative commentator Meghan McCain, called Trump's comments "gross and pathetic" at the time.Although Trump claimed the Senate was one vote away, in reality the vote was only to go to conference with the House on the Senate's "skinny repeal" of Obamacare. The President did not repeat that reference, which has become a familiar refrain in his stump speech, on Friday evening.Trump also did not mention McCain at a signing ceremony earlier this month at Fort Drum, New York, for a defense spending bill the senator had spearheaded, the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act.Trump expressed support for McCain when the senator's tumor was first diagnosed."Senator John McCain has always been a fighter," the President said in a statement at the time. "Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon."A White House official said Trump also called McCain following word of the senator's diagnosis. And before that health care vote, the President called McCain an "American hero" in a tweet.Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House last December, Trump said he had talked with the senator's wife."I did speak to Cindy McCain, and I wished her well. I wished John well. They've headed back, but I understand he'll come if we ever needed his vote, which hopefully we won't. But the word is John will come back if we need his vote, and it's too bad," Trump said.He continued, "It's tough. He's going through a very, he's going through a very tough time. There's no question about it, but he will come back if we need his vote."The two have had a tortured relationship and McCain, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in July 2017, has been one of the administration's most outspoken Republican critics.Trump has previously attacked McCain's record of service, saying the Vietnam veteran and one-time prisoner of war is "not a war hero" because he was captured."He is not a war hero," Trump told pollster Frank Luntz, who was hosting a July 2015 question-and-answer session at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa."He is a war hero," Luntz interjected."He is a war hero because he was captured?" Trump said, cutting him off. "I like people that weren't captured, OK? I hate to tell you. He is a war hero because he was captured. OK, you can have -- I believe perhaps he is a war hero."Trump has since acknowledged that McCain is a hero, but he refused to apologize in subsequent interviews. 3511

WILSON, N.C. – The father of a 5-year-old boy who was fatally shot outside his North Carolina home says he cannot understand why someone would want to harm his son.Austin Hinnant told WRAL that his son, Cannon, was playing on his bike in the yard of their Wilson home when he heard a gunshot while inside.Hinnant says he ran outside and found Cannon suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He scooped his son up in his arms and screamed for someone to help. The father claims he looked up and saw his neighbor, Darius Sessoms, in the yard next door, with a gun in his hand, pacing."I was looking at him as I was picking up Cannon,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I was so full of rage, but I couldn't leave my son's side. I wanted to be with my son."The boy was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died.A warrant was issued for Sessoms and police say he was taken into custody on Monday. The 25-year-old has been charged with 1st degree murder and is being held without bond.Sessoms doesn’t appear to be a stranger to the family. Hinnant says he had Sessoms over for dinner just the night before."I have no idea why he would kill my son in front of his two sisters and his cousin,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I have no idea."Law enforcement has not provided any details regarding a possible motive for Cannon’s murder.A funeral for the little boy was held Thursday. WNCN reports that hundreds gathered at the Shingleton Funeral Home in Wilson to pay their respects, including Cannon’s grandmother, Merrill Race.Race told WNCN that Cannon was “just a kid trying to have fun in his own yard and something like this happens. It’s despicable.”"Everybody just loved Cannon. He lit up the room," said Hinnant, according to WRAL.CNN contributed to this report. 1753

Whether you hate tootsie rolls or licorice, the truth is we've all received Halloween candy we don't like. WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — More than 70 West Point cadets have been accused of cheating on a math exam taken online when they were studying remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.A spokesman at the U.S. Military Academy says 55 cadets admitted cheating on the calculus exam in May. Most of them have been enrolled in a rehabilitation program and will be on probation for the rest of their time at West Point. The cheating came to light when instructors saw irregularities while grading the exam. One of the students was a sophomore, and the 72 others were freshmen in a class of 1,200 West Point cadets.According to the Associated Press, once an honors committee completed their investigation into the matter, two cases were dropped due to lack of evidence, four cases were dropped after cadets resigned, and three cadets admitted to cheating but aren't eligible for the rehab program.Several over cadets will face hearings with the administration to see if they will be penalized or expelled, the AP reported.According to the AP, the only other cheating scandal to occur at West Point happened in 1976 when 153 cadets were expelled or resigned for cheating on an electrical engineering exam.More than 90 of those caught cheating in 1976 were reinstated and allowed to graduate, the AP reported. 1305
