Fishermen on the “Prowler” were on their way back from Mexican Waters when their boat collided with a mega-yacht, the "Attessa IV" Friday night. A local Guamanian grill is using a musical twist to highlight their food, to bring in business.SMACK'N Guamanian Grill offers authentic Chamorro food. Chamorro is the native culture of the Mariana Islands region, including Guam.“All the recipes are authentic and passed down through generations,” says owner Christian Graham.The 24-year-old owner says opening the restaurant was a way to showcase his culture, which is not highly represented in San Diego.“I wanted to highlight what my grandmother, what my family has brought to the Chamorro food, the Chamorro community,” says Graham.When the pandemic hit, the newly opened SMACK'N Guamanian Grill had just opened six months prior.“Sales have dropped quite a bit between 30 to 50 percent,” says Graham. “We ended up losing about 20 percent of our staff members due to the pandemic because of their reduced hours.”As a young owner, Graham decided he needed a new, creative way to bring in business. He created a music video for the Guamanian Grill.“Just something different that restaurants haven’t done in the past.”The video, which launched a little over a week ago, already has hundreds of views on YouTube. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Thanksgiving is just four days away, and preparations are already underway for the 17th Annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving 5K Run.Proceeds from the race and festivities go toward the one million meals the organization serves to those who need it every year. One of the biggest draws of the event is the pie made by the organization’s Culinary Arts program students. The students are making 300 pumpkin pies, 200 apple pies, and 100 blueberry pies ahead of the race, possibly more if they get additional pre-orders. The pies are served the day before Thanksgiving at the shelter downtown. The pies are also sold at Balboa Park on race day."These are individuals who come to us and were homeless and now we're trying to get them up on their feet,” Deacon Joe Vargas, President of Father Joe’s Villages, said.The students were once homeless but decided that cooking would help get them out of poverty. They are part of a 14-week intensive program, where 92% of graduates get jobs in the field.10News met Dorothea Sontag, a disabled Air Force Veteran, who was once a volunteer at Father Joe’s. When times got tough, she sought help from them."After my husband died, I hit hard times,” Sontag said. She lived out of her van until Father Joe’s took her in. Now at 62 years old, the former nurse's aid has a new aspiration. "I have a brother who's chef in Connecticut, so maybe it's in our blood,” Sontag laughed. Her instructor Theresa Fields said she is proud of Sontag for always pursuing perfection in the dishes she prepares. "They get a sense of pride that you can see on their face. They just glow,” Fields said. "I see too many people who are disabled and they let their disability rule them. I rule my disability. I make sure I can keep doing things,” Sontag said. SAN DIEGO - San Diego photographers are taking advantage of the serene and luminous glow of the surf this week.Eerie neon blue waves have been seen against San Diego's shore this week, creating some rare photo opportunities. The phenomenon is created when a red tide, which is algae bloom filled with phytoplankton called "dinoflagellates," rolls off waves onto or near the shoreline.The organisms react with a bioluminescent chemical reaction when jostled as a way to warn predators, to lure prey, or communicate within their species. The blue glow can be created by a simple step in the water or crash of a wave.IN SAN DIEGO...The current red tide is being caused by massive numbers of dinoflagellates including "Ceratium falcatiforme" and "Lingulodinium polyedra," according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is not affiliated with The E.W. Scripps Co., the parent company of this station. Researchers do not know how long this current red tide will last or "the full spatial range of the bloom." In the past, blooms have lasted anywhere from a week to a month or more.San Diego's last red tide event in September 2013 lasted one week, while the previous one in October 2011 lasted a month, according to researchers. Previous ones have lasted even longer.Monday's event was captured from La Jolla to Encinitas. Scripps recommends viewing the marine event from a dark beach at least two hours after sunset, though visibility is not guaranteed.IS IT HARMFUL?...In some areas, a red tide can be toxic to local marine life. In California, the majority are not caused by species that produce toxins, such as domoic acid, according to researchers. However, it's still best to be cautious around the bloom.The Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System at Scripps samples the water for potential harmful algal toxins weekly.Red tides are unpredictable events and do not always give off bioluminescence, Scripps said.BUT WHY IS IT RED?...The red coloration is due to the high number of organisms in the water. During the day, organisms will swim to the surface to soak in sunlight. Each cell contains a little sunscreen that gives off the color, according to Scripps.When these organisms gather at the surface for sunlight, they can create an especially intense red.Researchers say a combination of physical, chemical, and biological factors are the driving forces behind allowing red tides to form. 2586
