SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From in-person instruction to distance learning, and now hybrid classes in some cases, most school districts have been through a lot during this pandemic.Many parents have decided to turn to charter schools, which have excelled in distance learning for years.A spokesperson for the California Charter Schools Association said they’ve heard from non-classroom based charters in San Diego County that are seeing substantial enrollment requests this academic year.Some of the charter schools have taken on many new students, while others had to stop enrollment due to the lack of state funding.“In the beginning, a lot of big districts were not providing any resources, the kids were just off,” said Kathleen Hermsmeyer, the superintended of Springs Charter Schools.Springs Charter Schools has locations across Southern California, including in Vista and Chula Vista in San Diego County.“We’ve been in business doing this type of distance learning education for 20 years, so for us, this was not a big transition,” she said in regards to education during the pandemic.“We already had all of our technology, our learning management system, our systems down for distance learning, so it wasn’t a big transition.”Hermsmeyer said the students new missed a day of class during the pandemic, and early on, Springs Charter Schools enrolled an additional 130 students in San Diego before they knew they wouldn’t be receiving extra state funding.“The school year starts for us July 1, we didn’t find out until June 28 that we were not going to get funded for those students,” she explained. “They did say we can disenroll the kids, but we’re not going to do that, that’s not kind, that’s not a service to the community.”Right now, she said about 7,000 students remain on the Springs Charter Schools waitlist across California, with nearly 1,000 in San Diego County. Hermsmeyer said that’s about four times more than last school year.“We can’t accept the students because there has been a cap on growth for non-classroom based charters like ours,” she said.“Parents were clamoring to get into our schools, and we couldn’t enroll them, so we wanted to provide something because parents were crying on the phone, it was a really hard crazy time, and parents wanted to keep their children moving academically.”Springs Valley Schools then launched “Open Classroom,” an online website providing free lessons for students K through 12 at home.“We had thousands of people all across the whole world using our free classroom,” she said.Springs Charter Schools received an award from the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools for going above and beyond during the pandemic.Hermsmeyer said Springs Charter Schools, along with a few other charters, are in a legal battle with the state over the lack of funding to enroll new students.Springs Charter Schools expects to start bringing back some students for in-person learning by the end of the month, with a full distance learning option still available.The California Department of Education is tracking statewide enrollment numbers for charter schools and traditional schools and will release the numbers for the 2020-21 academic year in March. 3205

If the county thinks you're owed a refund, you may receive a postcard in the mail, according to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.“Most of the time, we’re collecting money from San Diegans,” said McAllister. “We love summer when we can give it back and put a little extra vacation cash in people’s pockets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of men in high heels strutted through downtown San Diego on Saturday morning to support victims of domestic violence.The 11th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event started with the mile walk and ended with a family festival featuring face painting, live music and more.“It is a lighthearted way to bring awareness to domestic violence,” said Heather Frinlay, the Chief Operating Officer of the YWCA of San Diego County. The morning of family fun raised money for programs that provide victims of domestic violence resources like housing, counseling, and legal aid.“This is not a private issue; this is a community issue,” said Frinlay. “We still have one in four women, and now one in seven men experiencing domestic violence in their lifetimes.”San Diego County reported more than 17,000 incidents of domestic violence in 2017. 871

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds gathered in Balboa Park to pray for the 50 people killed in the New Zealand terrorist attack and spread the message that hate has no home here.About a dozen speakers shared stories of the victims or hate directed at minorities."It will take all of us to put hate back in it's corner," Sara Hassane, 17, said. "Just pure evil and again it has no place in this world and it's just sad," San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said. He and more than a dozen of his officers surrounded the event, along with snipers on the roof of nearby buildings, ensuring the crowd felt safe."We have officers out here making sure we don't have a copycat or anyone tries to do anything," he said.Though fear, still permeated the crowd. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Eateries in Ocean Beach say Memorial Day weekend is getting them back on top after a slow winter.A couple factors in play, nearly back to back storms and the closed pier. "Our numbers are still way above normal so we'll take it," South Beach Bar & Grille Bartender Philip Cullin said Friday and Saturday were great for business.Next door at Lighthouse Ice Cream, those sentiments were echoed.Sunday was a different story, clouds loomed overhead with sprinkles and rain in the evening, dampening the influx of customers. "It's really cold, there's not that many people out," 14-year-old birthday girl Bella said. She came out with friends and family to celebrate.Businesses thankful to see those customers, saying it's been tough through the slow winter months.Inside the bar, Cullin said they saw lots of business Sunday, "it comes in waves, you'll get like a mad lunch rush, everybody bombs in at the same time to get their fish tacos, and then they clear out mid afternoon and your locals come in."With the pier open, they're seeing even more people, "this area gets way more congested when people are chilling at the pier," Cullin said."I found out Thursday night the pier was opening on Friday and I knew I had to get here early and start making waffle cones, it was a busy day for us, we couldn't even find parking in the morning," Lighthouse Ice Cream Manager Robbie Valdivia said.They're hopeful Memorial Day will bring sunshine and another wave of customers."We actually had them for about two weeks now, a lot of tourists here from out of town, out of state, so it's been really really nice," Valdivia said, knowing it's the unofficial start of summer.
