BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin called for closer financial ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan while meeting with Fredrick Chien, the head of a Taiwan finance delegation here on Thursday.Jia, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People' s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that financial cooperation was crucial for the cross-Straits economic bond. BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Wednesday pledged to cement legislative ties.The pledge came out of talks in Beijing between Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) Choe Tae Bok.In his opening remarks, Wu said the meeting was his third with Choe this year.The first meeting took place when DPRK leader Kim Jong Il visited China in May. Choe was then a part of Kim's entourage.Wu and Choe then met on the sidelines of an international parliamentary leaders' meeting in Geneva in July."Three meetings in one year reflects our special relationship," Wu said, adding that he expects Choe's visit to boost bilateral relations and ties between the two nations' legislatures.Saying China and DPRK are good neighbors, Wu noted that China-DPRK relations have withstood the tests of changes in the international arena.China-DPRK relations have witnessed significant progress this year, Wu said, citing DPRK leader Kim Jong Il's two visits to China during which Chinese President Hu and Kim reached a number of important agreements.Wu said it is the unswerving principle of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to cement and develop friendly ties with the DPRK.China hopes to work with the DPRK to carry out the consensus of their leaders while maintaining high-level exchanges and stepping up strategic consultation, Wu said.Choe hailed China's remarkable achievements of the reform and opening-up and China's modernization drive, expressing hope the Chinese people will make further progress in building socialism with Chinese characteristics.On legislative ties, Wu said the NPC and the SPA play crucial roles in their countries' politics.The NPC hopes to work closely with the SPA on state governance and legal system building while boosting communication and consultation on international and regional parliamentary organizations, Wu said.Choe began a five-day visit to China Tuesday. After spending time in Beijing, he will travel to northeast China's Jilin Province.

BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- CNC World, the English-language channel of Xinhua News Agency's TV arm, CNC, will reach cable television audiences in Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, according to an agreement signed Friday between CNC and South Africa-based MIH Group.The English-language channel of China Xinhua News Network Corporation (CNC) will be available to 4 million African families through MIH's cable network.Xinhua President Li Congjun met Koos Bekker, founder of MIH, before the signing of the agreement. Both sides expressed their hope CNC will be a competitive and influential international media organization.On Thursday, Xinhua signed an agreement with Eutelsat Communications to extend the coverage of CNC to all of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, through Eutelsat Communications' Eurobird, Hotbird and W7 satellites.CNC World broadcasts English news programs 24 hours a day and covers breaking news and major political, economic and cultural news from around the world.Launched in 2009, CNC has developed into a television network with satellite services in the Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe and Africa.It is also expanding its cable television and new media services and provides news programs to about 300 domestic and overseas television organizations.

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods grew 18.7 percent in November year on year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday.Retail sales of consumer goods stood at 1.39 trillion yuan (208.1 billion U.S. dollars) in November and the growth rate was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in October, the NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun said at a press conference.Retail sales of consumer goods in the January-to-November period reached 13.92 trillion yuan, up 18.4 percent from the same period last year.The growth rate in the January-to-November period was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in the January-to-October period.The NBS said urban consumption hit 1.2 trillion yuan in November, up 19 percent year on year.Rural residents spent 186.5 billion yuan on consumption goods in November, up 17 percent year on year.In breakdown, catering sector sales rose 19.6 percent to 160.1 billion yuan in November from a year earlier, while retail sales increased 18.6 percent to 1.23 trillion yuan in November year on year.

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's government-run welfare lottery has raised a total of 164.5 billion yuan (24.8 billion U.S. dollars) for public welfare funds over the last 23 years, the Welfare Lottery Distribution and Management Center (WLDMC) announced Monday.Total sales of welfare lottery tickets had amounted to 500 billion yuan (75.2 billion U.S. dollars) since the lottery started operation in 1987, said a statement issued by the WLDMC.Half of the funds were allocated to social welfare projects organized by local governments, and the rest to public welfare funds or projects administered by central authorities, including the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), said the statement.The civil affair authorities for the past 23 years had supported more than 200,000 projects for the public good, the statement said.The projects included social welfare institutions, child welfare associations, homes for the aged in villages and towns, and community service centers.The WLDMC is administered by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which was authorized by the State Council to raise welfare funds through lottery sales in 1987.
