PYONGYANG, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Premier Kim Yong Il met China's new ambassador, Liu Hongcai, here Tuesday.During the meeting which was also attended by Vice-Premier Ro Tu Chol at the Mansudae Assembly Hall, the DPRK officials said they highly appreciated the relationship between the DPRK and China.Kim warmly welcomed Liu, saying the DPRK and China held a series of activities last year to mark the two countries' year of friendship and the bilateral relationship had witnessed constant achievements in areas of politics, economy and culture, especially in the commercial sector, from the beginning of this year.Kim expressed thanks for the support of the Chinese party, government and people to the DPRK on socialistic construction, saying the DPRK people would never forget it and it was the unswerving stand of the DPRK's party and government to continue consolidating and developing the DPRK-China friendship.Liu said the activities held by China and the DPRK last year to mark the friendship served as a good opportunity for young people in the two countries to exchange views and develop friendship.He said he would make efforts to boost relations between the two countries and expand areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.Liu, who arrived in Pyongyang on March 5, presented his credentials on March 8 to Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.

TAIYUAN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of people in north China's Shanxi Province flooded onto the streets Saturday afternoon and stayed until Sunday morning after earthquake rumors spread in the coal-rich region recently hit by a 4.8-magnitude quake.Major streets, parks and squares in cities like Jinzhong, Luliang, Changzhi, Yangquan and Taiyuan filled with anxious people and private cars. In rural areas, many villagers went out in the open air with their personal property, such as TVs.The Shanxi Provincial Seismological Bureau issued an urgent statement Sunday morning, asking residents to keep calm and not to believe in the quake rumor."According to the quake forecast regulation, only the provincial government can release quake forecast information. Other organizations and individuals are not authorized to do so," the statement said.The bureau is using TV, radio, Internet and text messages to clarify the situation and calm the residents.Meanwhile, local police are investigating the incident and trying to find out the source of the rumor.On Jan. 24, a 4.8-magnitude quake struck Yuncheng City in Shanxi.

  

BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Communist Party of China (CPC), Zhou Yongkang, proposed stronger law-enforcement cooperation between China and Nepal, according to a statement of the Ministry of Public Security Tuesday.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark during a meeting with visiting Nepali Minister for Home Affairs Bhim Bahadur Rawal in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Monday.China attaches great importance to China-Nepal law-enforcement cooperation and expects the two countries to deepen pragmatic cooperation and safeguard and promote the regional peace and stability, said Zhou, who is also secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee. Zhou Yongkang (R), a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, meets with Nepalese Minister of Home Affairs Bhim Bahadur Rawal in Beijing, capital of China, Feb. 8, 2010China appreciates Nepal's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its prevention of anti-China forces from carrying out separatist activities on its territory, Zhou added.China is willing to further strengthen communication, coordination and cooperation on the Tibet issue with Nepal, he said.Rawal said Nepal, which brooks no anti-China separatist forces undermining its friendly relations with China, would like to boost law-enforcement cooperation with China and jointly crack down on crimes on their border areas.China's Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu also held talks with Rawal Monday after the latter's meeting with Zhou.Meng said China's Ministry of Public Security is ready to work with the Nepali Ministry of Home Affairs to implement the consensus reached by their state leaders to enhance bilateral exchanges and cooperation.Based on the principle of considering the overall situation and looking to the future, Meng expects continuous and healthy development in China-Nepal relations.Rawal echoed Meng sentiments, reiterating Nepal's willingness to further cooperate with China in law-enforcement.At the invitation of Meng, Rawal is visiting China from Feb.6-12.

  

BEIJING, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's National Bureau of Corruption Prevention said in a circular posted on its website Monday that it would explore ways to fight corruption in non-public commercial entities and "new social organizations" in 2010."New social organizations" refer to intermediaries, non-governmental organizations and private non-business groups. Statistics from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed there are around 400,000 such organizations in China.Industry associations will also be monitored for corruption, according to the circular, which highlighted the bureau's work in 2010.The bureau promised that it would earnestly exchange and cooperate with the international community in the anti-corruption efforts.It said that authorities would continue working to prevent officials using public money to travel overseas and they would work on the implementation of regulations for supervising officials whose spouses and children have emigrated abroad.It also pledged to improve transparency of government affairs as well as factory and village management's dealing of local affairs.According to an survey carried out by People's Daily Online, corruption has remained one of the top three concerns of Chinese netizens since the survey was initiated in 2006.Chinese authorities' latest move in the fight against corruption took place on Saturday as the State Council issued a revised regulation on the implementation of the Audit Law, which aims at tightening supervision of areas highly prone to corruption, including the construction industry.
