CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — The Dooley family woke up Wednesday morning to some deflated holiday joy outside their home on Highland Drive."A lot of sadness. It really broke our heart, " said homeowner Gavin Dooley.A check of the surveillance video revealed the culprit. Just before 3 a.m., a black SUV pulls up next to their home, as someone emerges from the passenger side and climbs over their four-foot gate. Moments later, the person throws himself onto a large inflatable of a Santa and his fish taco truck.The scrooge tore through their yard, destroying all of their giant Christmas inflatables."Must have had a good pop on the first one. Second one, he jumps on it twice," said Dooley.That inflatable was a 9-foot tall television, reflecting the images of a projector from the movie "A Christmas Story." The vandal then tackles the final inflatable, which sported North Pole penguins.The end result: 0 dollars worth of inflatables destroyed."Pretty unrepairable. Just like a balloon, they’re popped. There's a huge tear in them," said Dooley.Dooley, who has three children, says his youngest -- his 9-year-old son -- was the most distraught.Also dismayed, some neighbors who bring their toddler girl to see the inflatables every day. That morning, she was nearly in tears."She kept saying, 'Porque? Why? Why would they do this?'" said Dooley.It’s a question Dooley has asked himself. Why? And why at the end of a tough year when holiday cheer is so needed."We were hoping Christmas decorations would bring a lot of joy to people. This turns that joy into sadness," said Dooley.Dooley would like to put up some smaller inflatables but is worried they could also be targeted.The family has filed a police report. Businesses are one step closer to growing their own marijuana in San Diego. The deadline to enter the lottery for those permits ended Wednesday afternoon. Bradley Fisher really has his hopes up. "I'm getting it," said Fisher. "I'll be one of the 40 forsure."  He applied for two permits Wednesday so his client can start growing their own pot. He submitted his paperwork ahead of the lottery deadline, which gives him a better chance of getting that permit down the road. His client already has a warehouse set up for production. "They're able to grow it and bring it right to the dispensary," said Fisher. "They can make baked items as well, cookies, cakes the whole nine-yards, and it's all legit because they'll have permits for it."But it's not a simple process. "They're gonna put like a mezzanine in the building, in the warehouse, ovens, and stuff like that, tons of lights," said Fisher. "Electric is going to be off the hook; water is going up there. It's very costly, but then again its very beneficial."The city is now reviewing those applications to make sure they meet their demands. "To make the cultivation center you need to be 1,000 feet from any schools, any churches, daycares, parks."Applicants can still apply for appointments Thursday even if they weren't part of the lottery. The first 100 guests will also get a custom Salt & Straw tote bag at the opening.Known for its unique flavors that have already attracted fans to its first San Diego stop in Little Italy, Salt & Straw has scooped out a niche as a popular small-batch ice cream shop. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- As a way to deal with San Diego’s growing roadway congestion, more communities are installing mini-roundabouts to slow speeding drivers. Yet some neighbors in North County are calling them death traps.If you take a drive down Cassia Road in Carlsbad, you’ll see mini-roundabouts, also known as mini-circles, that are causing a big fuss. Fire Captain Nick Valenzuela lives in the neighboring community. “I've come down [to the road] because I’ve heard traffic accidents from my house and come down and helped people,” he tells us.“I've seen the aftermath of at least two accidents,” adds neighbor Mark Bua, who is also a police officer. Bua says the mini-circles are so small that drivers blow right past them without yielding for oncoming traffic. He shared photos of debris from some of the collisions.The mini-circles on Cassia Road were installed at the end of 2016 as a way to slow traffic in bustling North County.Mini-circles have had great success in other booming cities like Seattle, which now has more than 1,000 of them with a 90% reduction in collisions.Dan Burden is a renowned traffic expert. He was once named one of the most important civic innovators in the world, according to TIME Magazine. We asked Burden to review photos of the Carlsbad mini-circles. “[They’ve] got some design issues,” he told us. “In this case the circle is so small and there's no consequence in getting close to it. They're designed in a way that a motorist could go much too fast,” he adds.Burden is a fan of mini-circles, if they're done right. He says they're easier on cars than speed bumps and create better flow than stop signs. "They slow traffic down to 15 to 20 miles per hour upon entry,” he adds.However, Carlsbad neighbors claim they’re playing chicken with speeding drivers and lives are at risk.10News submitted a request with the City of Carlsbad to review the number of recent collisions Cassia Road. According to reported incidents, collisions actually appear to have dropped since the mini-circles were installed.Nearby Leucadia is hoping to soon install mini-circles along the congested North Coast Highway 101. A few years ago, the mini-circles were installed in the Bird Rock community of La Jolla, where motorists are now driving half as fast as they used to. On Harbinson Avenue in La Mesa, the circles were removed a few years after neighbors complained about safety concerns.The City of Carlsbad is reportedly monitoring and making refinements to the mini-circles on Cassia Road, but is aware of residents’ concerns and will consider making more changes in the upcoming months.“This is Carlsbad. Things are supposed to be done right. This is not right. This [was] not done right at all,” adds Valenzuela. 2782

CARLSBAD— It's the winter sport most famous for being a bit odd. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego.Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president.The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible.In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points.The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego.The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said.
