Two studies recently published in the CDC’s journal indicate COVID-19 can spread on airplanes. In one study, researchers found a woman showing symptoms on a 10-hour flight potentially spread COVID-19 to at least 15 other people on the plane.A 27-year-old businesswoman who lived in London and was from Vietnam started having symptoms, fever and cough, while still in London in late February. She and her sister had visited Italy and other locations in London before the woman flew to Vietnam. Her sister later tested positive for COVID-19.The 27-year-old was one of 21 people sitting in business class on the March 1 flight from London to Hanoi, Vietnam. The woman became more sick once she landed, and isolated in her home. A few days later, she tested positive for COVID-19, as did three people in her house and a friend back in London she had visited before the flight.Researchers quickly tracked down the majority of people who were on the woman’s flight to isolate and trace potential cases. In all, researchers identified 14 additional passengers and one crew member who had COVID-19. The study states 12 of the passengers who tested positive had sat in business class with the 27-year-old woman, and 11 of them were sitting within two seats of her.“First, thermal imaging and self-declaration of symptoms have clear limitations, as demonstrated by case 1 (the woman), who boarded the flight with symptoms and did not declare them before or after the flight. Second, long flights not only can lead to importation of COVID-19 cases but also can provide conditions for superspreader events,” researchers concluded. The second study looked at four people aboard a flight from Boston to Hong Kong on March 9 who all tested positive for COVID-19 after landing in Hong Kong and showing symptoms. Two passengers, a couple, flew in business class. They showed symptoms the day they landed and sought healthcare. The other two cases were flight attendants who served the business class and first class sections of the plane. Both had come into close contact with the couple, and they both developed symptoms a few days after landing.Researchers were able to sequence their viruses and discovered all four had the same strain of COVID-19.Scientists conclude the couple contracted COVID-19 while they were in the U.S. and transmitted it to the flight attendants on the plane.“Passengers and cabin crew do not generally go through the same check-in process at airports before boarding. Although we cannot completely rule out the possibility that (the flight attendants) were infected before boarding, the unique virus sequence and 100% identity across the whole virus genome from the 4 patients makes this scenario highly unlikely,” researchers stated.Although there were no other positive COVID-19 cases reported from this flight, not all passengers were tested or tracked like in the first study.“Our results demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted on airplanes. To prevent transmission of the virus during travel, infection control measures must continue,” they noted. Both of these studies looked at cases on flights before face coverings were mandatory on flights. They were published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, a journal of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 3286

TUSCON, Ariz. – Nearly million worth of meth, cocaine and heroin were found in a vehicle along the U.S.-Mexican border over the weekend, according to U.S. Border Patrol.Agents say two 18-year-olds were arrested Saturday after attempting to smuggle the narcotics near Rio Rico.Officials say agents were patrolling the desert north of the border when they saw several people emerge from brush and load packages into a parked truck near Pe?a Blanca Lake before departing back into the desert.Minutes later, border patrol says agents conducted a traffic stop on a red Chevrolet Silverado in the area. Concealed inside the vehicle, they reportedly found 57 packages of suspected meth, cocaine and heroin, with a street value estimated at about ,889,600.The truck’s driver and passenger, both residents of Rio Rico, were arrested and ultimately turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the seized drugs, to face federal drug charges, according to border patrol.Agents say they were unable to locate the individuals that emerged from the brush. 1072

Two nooses were discovered on the grounds of the Mississippi state Capitol on Monday morning, along with signs referring to Tuesday's Senate special election, a state spokesperson said."We are hanging nooses to remind people that times have not changed," reads one of the signs, said Chuck McIntosh, director of communications for the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration, which oversees the Capitol Police."Tuesday Nov 27th thousands of Mississippians will vote for a senator. We need someone that will respect lynched victims," reads another sign, McIntosh said.CNN affiliate WLBT alerted Capitol Police to the items. An investigation is underway. Officials say they will release pictures of the signs and nooses later Monday. The items were found one day before Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith faces former Democratic congressman Mike Espy in a Senate race that has drawn attention to the state's history of racist violence.A series of recordings surfaced that featured Hyde-Smith making comments about attending a "public hanging" and suppressing the votes of students in the state.Additionally, Hyde-Smith once promoted a measure that praised a Confederate soldier's effort to "defend his homeland" and pushed a revisionist view of the Civil War, CNN's KFile reported over the weekend.Hyde-Smith accused Democrats of weaponizing the "public hanging" remark and said she would apologize to anyone who was offended by it. 1473

Vice President Mike Pence formally accepted the Republican nomination for vice president on Wednesday, as he will join Donald Trump for a bid at a second term in the White House.Pence delivered his speech from Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, in front of a small group of supporters. The GOP convention has largely been held remotely in Washington, DC, after the party canceled most activitiesPence addresses unrestPence, who was not expected to address the growing unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and elsewhere following the shooting of Jacob Blake decried violence at the demonstrations, Pence reiterated that the Trump administration will ensure law and order.Protests continued on Wednesday as pro athletes from the MLS, MLB and NBA sat out in solidarity with the demonstrations.Blake was shot seven times on Sunday by Kenosha Police officer Rusten Sheskey, who has since been placed on administrative leave. Sheskey has not been charged criminally for the shooting.Late Tuesday, two people were killed and one person was wounded in a shooting amid the demonstrations. Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, of Antioch, Illinois, was charged in connection with the shootings."Let me be clear: the violence must stop – whether in Minneapolis, Portland, or Kenosha. Too many heroes have died defending our freedoms to see Americans strike each other down," Pence saidPence promises coronavirus vaccine by year’s endPence, who has spearheaded the White House’s coronavirus task force, committed that a vaccine will be ready by the end of the year. While there is incredible urgency to develop a vaccine given 180,000 US coronavirus deaths so far in 2020, there are doubts among public health experts a vaccine can be distributed so quickly.Last week, Joe Biden said 'no miracle is coming.' What Joe doesn't seem to understand is that America is a nation of miracles and I'm proud to report we're on track to have the world's first safe, effective coronavirus vaccine by the end of this year,” Pence said. The White House has launched "Project Warp Speed," with the goal of producing 300 million vaccine doses by January. Dr. Anthony Fauci told Reuters earlier this week it is important for a vaccine to be proven effective. "One of the potential dangers if you prematurely let a vaccine out is that it would make it difficult, if not impossible, for the other vaccines to enroll people in their trial," he told the outlet.Jack Brewer speaks following insider trading chargesFormer NFL star Jack Brewer delivered an RNC speech on Wednesday despite being charged with insider trading earlier in the month.Brewer’s charges are civil and not criminal in nature. He is accused of selling 100,000 shares of a “pennystock” in 2017 after allegedly receiving insider information about the stock’s value.Brewer said he is a lifelong Democrat, “But I support Donald Trump. Let me be clear. I didn't come here for the popularity or the praise, the likes or the retweets. I'm here as a servant to God, a servant to the people of our nation and a servant to our president." 3051

US President Donald Trump took aim at two of America's closest allies in a speech at the NRA convention, saying strict gun laws failed to prevent the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris and highlighting a purported increase in knife violence in London. The comments provoked anger in both France and Britain.France was especially incensed after Trump, while speaking at the gun rights convention in Dallas on Friday, pointed his hand as if it were a gun while describing how each of the victims in Paris was fatally shot."They took their time and gunned them down one by one -- boom, come over here, boom, come over here, boom," he said. The French foreign ministry issued a statement Saturday after Trump's comments."France expresses its firm disapproval of President Trump's remarks ... and calls for the respect of the memory of the victims," it said.Francois Hollande, who was the French President during the 2015 attacks, tweeted Saturday:"Donald Trump's shameful remarks and obscene histrionics say a lot about what he thinks of France and its values. The friendship between our two peoples will not be tainted by disrespect and excessiveness. All my thoughts go to the victims of November 13." 1202
