INDIANAPOLIS — In her speech Friday night at the Young Democrats of America convention, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the past ideals and current policies of the Democratic Party. She praised the party’s history on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. “We are not a monolith, and we don’t want to be,” she said. But she also touted the diversity of the current House Democratic Caucus, which she said is 60% women, people of color and LGBT.“Our diversity is our strength,” she said. Pelosi then went into more detail about the party’s current efforts in Congress, starting with the recent passage of an increase of the federal minimum wage to per hour. Both Democratic representatives from Indiana voted in favor of the proposal, but it is very unlikely to pass the Senate. She discussed what other things House Democrats are working on in Congress, such as net neutrality, gun violence prevention and climate change. Pelosi also mentioned President Donald Trump a few times. “We legislate, we investigate, and we litigate,” she said. “And we will hold the president accountable.”She ended the speech by returning to the past, quoting Thomas Paine, one of the country’s founding fathers. “The times have found us,” she recited. “Do you feel the times have found you now?”Michael Joyce, the spokesperson of the Republican National Committee, accused Pelosi of refusing to act on “anything Hoosiers want to see accomplished in Washington.”“Pelosi’s turbulent tenure as Speaker has allowed the socialist squad to takeover driving the message for the Democrats, and they’re currently driving their party off a cliff to a path of irrelevancy come 2020,” Joyce said. 1685

In a world of dating apps and websites, many people are still going the old-fashion route of speed dating. Some say it’s better than ever. "Speed dating is a way to meet people face to face in a 6-minute mini-date format," says Michael Clarke, who runs Pre-Dating Speed Dating. Clarke says people dating later in life are frustrated with the apps and the online quest to find love. "Prior to marriage, or when they were younger, they met people face to face,” Clarke says. “This is what their comfort zone is." Jodie Lopes is done swiping right and left on dating apps. "It's really about always putting your best foot forward all the time. I just want to be myself," she says. So, Lopes is participating in this speed dating event that’s for midlife singles only. And this place is packed! Lori Chapman, a divorced mother, is also here, looking for her match. Chapman says online dating scares her and speed dating is more her speed. “I'm old school, and face-to-face is the best," she says. Chapman says the men at speed dates are more genuine than the ones online. "The guys are more on a mission that they are here for a reason,” she says.If you’re a midlife single, both Chapman and Lopes say try speed dating, but do it with an open mind. Organizer Clarke says you’ll never know who you might meet."Most people come to one to two, sometimes three events, just to test the waters see if they meet anybody,” Clarke says. “But I can tell you this, I just had my 68th marriage in the last eight years." 1526
In his first TV interview since he was charged with sexual abuse last month, a tearful R. Kelly says he is "fighting" for his life.In a teaser for an interview that will air in full over two days starting Wednesday on "CBS This Morning," Kelly says allegations he slept with underage girls are not true and a product of "people," whom he did not identify specifically in the released clip, "going back to my past.""They're going back to the past and they trying to add all of this stuff now to that, to make all of the stuff that's going on now [feel] real to people," he tells Gayle King.At one point, Kelly points to the camera and says it would be stupid of him to hold girls against their will."Use your common sense. ... Forget the blogs, forget how you feel about me. Hate me if you want to; love me if you want. But just use your common sense," he says, raising his voice. "How stupid would it be for me ... with my crazy past and what I've been through?"Kelly then appears to begin crying."I didn't do this stuff. This is not me. I'm fighting for my f****** life."Kelly was indicted last month on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse -- a class 2 felony -- involving four alleged victims. The indictment accuses Kelly of sexual acts with three children older than 13 but younger than 17. There is no age range listed for one of the alleged victims. The charges say Kelly used force or the threat of force. His attorney, Steve Greenberg, has said his client is innocent."I think all the women are lying," Greenberg said after Kelly turned himself in to police. The charges span from 1998 to 2010, according to Cook County, Illinois, State's Attorney Kim Foxx.If convicted, Kelly faces three to seven years in prison for each count.Kelly has been associated with accusations of abuse, manipulation and inappropriate encounters with girls and young women for more than two decades. He has strongly denied the accusations. 1943
