WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Last Friday was a day for the history books at the Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Station 65.For the first time, it was staffed by a shift consisting of all women."Station 65 on that day, from the top down, captain, driver, firefighter, the rescue lieutenant, the paramedic, every single person was female that day on that shift," Deputy Chief James Ippolito said. The proof is in the picture, which featured Fire Medic Kelsey Krzywada side by side with her female colleagues. She is the youngest woman in the photo, whose ages range from 20 to 50. She said it didn't take her long to find her calling"I was always interested in the medical field so medical field and something super active to help people it seemed like a perfect fit," Krzywada said. She admits that in a male-dominated field, the road wasn't easy."Fire school was definitely really hard. I'm always the smallest one, smallest height, smallest weight. It's hard to keep up with the boys. I trained as hard as I could," Krzywada said.Lucky for her, there were other women before her, like Rescue Lt. Krystyna Krakowski, to help pave the way.Krakowski understood the impact of an all-female crew, even if for one shift. WPTV Palm Beach Gardens Fire Medic Kelsey Krzywada hopes the all-female fire crew will inspire other women to become first responders. "We just thought women empowerment, girl power, how fun to have five women at the same station. It was a great day," Krakowski said. However, it was also a sad day after the death of a gender equality icon."It also happened on a day that Justice Ginsburg passed away as well," Ippolito said.As Ginsburg famously said, "Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you."According to Krakowski, it's already working for people like her daughter: a college student and a member of the Palm Beach Ocean Rescue."Women can do the same thing men can do," said Krakowski. "You know, we're capable of anything."And now, there are scores of other women and young girls to carry on the legacy of equality."As the years go on, and it becomes more prevalent, more girls are gonna see us and be motivated to go to fire school and EMT school and continue on through the EMS field," Krzywada said.Ippolito said Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue currently has 12 female employees with room for plenty more. This story was first reported by Chris Gilmore at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. 2507

When the ,200 stimulus payments came out earlier this year, parents were promised an additional 0 for each child they claimed as a dependent. Many low-income families didn’t receive that money, called Economic Impact Payments, because the stimulus checks were based on tax returns. Now, the IRS is trying to fix that, and is asking parents who did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return to still go to their website and claim a dependent by September 30. The IRS has set up a non-filers tool to help. The non-filers site is designed for those with incomes below about ,400 for couples and ,200 for individuals, and others who are otherwise not required to file a tax return. Those people typically do not file a tax return, and therefore would not have a record with the IRS of any dependent children."Given the extremely high demand for EIP assistance, we have continued to prioritize and increase resource allocations to eligible individuals, including those who may be waiting on some portion of their payment. To help with this, we are allocating additional IRS resources to ensure eligible recipients receive their full payments during this challenging time,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.A news release on the IRS’ website also says they will be helping those who may have had part of their payments deducted because of past-due child support. The agency says people do not need to take any action, they are working to resolve those cases where past-due child support was applied. 1505

With COVID-19 cases surging across most of the country, teachers are weighing whether it’s safe for them to return to the classroom while at the same time, trying to make sure their students don’t slip through the cracks because of the virus. In a virtual town hall-style meeting, four educators from across the country gathered to share their thoughts, concerns and excitement about the upcoming school year. The overriding theme: parents and students will need to be flexible.“We’re going to ask you for grace for this entire year. We want to teach your children, but when we voice concerns it’s not because we’re lazy and we don’t want to work, it’s because we want to make sure our families are safe, too,” said Rachel Sandoval, an elementary school teacher in Colorado.Sandoval’s school was forced to close back in March because of COVID-19. She knows her students have lost out on valuable in-person learning time because of the virus, but she’s also worried that gathering students back in a classroom setting this coming fall could give the virus a perfect environment to spread in.“We can’t do the same thing we did last year. The world has changed. Everything has changed,” she said. Her concern was echoed by other teachers who joined the virtual town hall.Steph MacPhail teachers 5th grade in Minnesota. As a mom, she’s struggled to juggle a full-time teaching job, while at the same time, taking care of her two young boys.“I felt really burned out this spring from a teacher perspective and from a parent perspective,” she said. While McaPhail misses her students, she worries that COVID-19 cases will continue to surge if kids go back to school.“Kids and families want to go back to normal, but this is going to be anything but normal, and that’s scary,” she said.Across the country, many school districts are choosing to start the year virtually, which brings another set of challenges. Some kids don’t have adequate internet access or access to a computer that they can use to access online classes.“We need to make sure kids are still staying engaged while at the same time dealing with these environmental factors. For a lot of students in poverty-stricken areas, having the one interaction at school is so critically important,” said Dr. Kenyae Reese, who serves as a principal in Nashville, Tennessee.Dr. Reese’s district is one of those starting the school year entirely online. She’s asked her teachers to be flexible. In some instances, she says she’s talked to students who might be embarrassed to turn on their camera during a Zoom call because of the home they live in. Other students in her high school are taking care of younger siblings, all while trying to keep up with classwork.“We’re changing the landscape of a whole generation, what they know about school and how they interact with people,” Dr. Reese said. With all the uncertainty, though, every teacher still expressed joy and excitement about whatever the upcoming school year brings, including Phillip Starostka, who teaches elementary school in Arizona.“We are working as hard as possible and will do everything we can to make it seamless,” he said. 3145
