SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The driver of the McLaren sports car involved in a fiery fatal crash on Interstate 805 Thursday and the mother and daughter who died have been identified.Trevor Heitmann, 18, was behind the wheel of the 2014 sports car that collided with an SUV, killing himself, and a 43-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner. The mother and daughter were identified by a relative as Aileen and Aryana Pizarro. The medical examiner is using an alternative means to identify the bodies because of how badly they were burned, according to the California Highway Patrol.Heitmann was traveling at a high rate of speed heading southbound in a northbound HOV lane at about 4:30 p.m. near La Jolla Village Dr. before the collision, CHP said. Troopers believe he entered via an HOV lane access at Carol Canyon Rd.RELATED: 12-year-old among victims in fiery wrong-way crash on I-805The two vehicles collided and exploded into flames, witnesses told 10News, causing a chain reaction of crashes with at least five other vehicles.Heitmann was killed of blunt force trauma and pronounced dead at the scene, the medical examiner reported.The mother and daughter in the SUV died due to the fire which engulfed the vehicle after the crash, the report said.It's still not clear why Heitmann was traveling at such a high rate of speed in the wrong direction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation is once again calling on San Diego County officials to do more to help curb the high numbers of COVID-19 among Latinos. On Wednesday, the organization released a statement regarding county numbers breaking down the number of contact tracing hires by ethnicity. Of the county's recent hires, 144 are Latino or Hispanic, that makes up 25.5% of the hires. Chicano Federation President and CEO Nancy Maldonado said county officials had told them they would hire people from within the community, that spoke Spanish, to serve as contact tracers. However, in Wednesday's statement, Maldonado said, "They lied." Maldonado has been an outspoken critic of the county and their response to how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Latinos. Data from the county shows there are roughly 34% of Latinos in the county, but they make up 61% of the positive cases. During Wednesday's county press conference, Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher each addressed the concerns. Fletcher said the county's goal is to have contact tracers who match not only the demographics of the population, but also the demographics of the positive cases. Fletcher added that they are doing outreach to get more applicants and also more Spanish speakers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI said a bank robber who held up a US Bank in Rolando last week struck again Friday in La Mesa. Surveillance photos show a man entering the Wells Fargo Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 8011 University Ave. in La Mesa just before noon. The man pretended to talk on his phone before demanding money from the teller, agents said. He also threatened “to shoot” if he didn’t receive money, according to the FBI. After approaching the first counter, the man approached several tellers in an effort to get more cash, said investigators. The man spoke to tellers Aug. 15 during the US Bank robbery inside the Vons at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. “Grab a bag. Start with your 100s. Put all the money in the bag and give it to me or I'm gonna [sic] shoot,” the man said, according to agents. A helicopter searched the area near the Wells Fargo Friday afternoon but could not find the man. La Mesa Police said the man is 5’8”, in his mid-20s to early 30s, and has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Anyone with information about the robberies was asked to call the FBI. 1088

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The message from nurses and caregivers Tuesday morning was clear, "it's a question of priorities for entire healthcare system." Frustration and anger built after a 27-month contract renewal was signed by Palomar Health's CEO, Diane Hansen. The contract details a base salary close to million, with potential of earning bonuses, increasing that amount. Frontline workers argue that because COVID-19 led to an increase of patients, and layoffs of caregivers and nurses, "the board should have invested in resources and more protective equipment. Some of the PPE is not even medical grade, and everyone who's been laid off should be brought back," said representative for California's nurses association, Sarah Gurling. Gurling joined other reps and nurses in a protest at Palomar Medical Center, arguing funds should have been allocated towards other resources within their facilities."Caregivers and nurses are the heart of the hospital. We know what's best for patients and each other. The hospital executives and the Palomar board has lost sight of that." Meahwhile, Palomar's health board chair, Richard Engel, stands behind his decision. He said Hansen has done a tremendous job and credits much of the hospital's success through her work.
