COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on people living with diabetes is a growing concern.The American Diabetes Association says nearly 40% of COVID-19 deaths have been from those with the disease, while 90% of the hospitalizations have been people with diabetes or other underlying conditions.“Diabetes was a health crisis and epidemic in this country before the pandemic, and what the pandemic has done really is shine a very bright light on an old problem,” said Tracey Brown, CEO of the American Diabetes Association.Brown has lived with diabetes for 16 years. She's worried about additional financial struggles brought on by the pandemic.Even before COVID-19, one in four people were rationing their insulin to get by.Brown says the current unemployment rate is higher among people with diabetes. So, the burden has only worsened for those that have lost health coverage because of job loss.The disease also disproportionately impacts people of color living in low income areas.Brown says even now in 2020, every 5 minutes, someone in the U.S. loses a limb because of complications from diabetes.“There are so many comorbidities that go along with this, which is another reason why I talk about the fact that if we want to address the wellbeing of Americans, and improve the wellbeing of Americans, you can't have that conversation without having a conversation about improving diabetes,” said Brown.Brown wants to make sure people with diabetes don't feel like they're alone right now.There's a page of resources available on their website, Diabetes.org. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 21-year-old sailor died after falling from the USS Nimitz Friday night. According to U.S. Naval Air Forces, the sailor fell from one of the ship’s aircraft elevators. The USS Nimitz was in port at Naval Air Station North Island. The 21-year-old suffered serious injuries from the fall and died Saturday morning, according to the Navy. The name of the sailor hasn’t been released at this time and the nature of the accident is under investigation. A sailor from USS Nimitz passed away early this morning from injuries sustained in an accident aboard ship last night. The sailor fell from one of the ship’s aircraft elevators in a down position. COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Yanise Ho says with all the negativity going on, she wants to prove that there are good people in the world.She's been on her journey for five months and has already rollerbladed through 15 states just depending on strangers.Ho fixes her wheels as she prepares to rollerblade across Nebraska."Rollerblades become a part of my body, it's not a bicycle, I have to figure out how to lock it up, it's a part of me," said Yanise Ho.Carrying 43 pounds on her back, Ho started in Miami and plans to finish in Portland, Oregon by November, and blade all the way back, making her trip about 6,200 miles."My mission is to show that there are amazing people in the world, every day I have no plans, just faith and the goodness of people," said Ho.Rolling state to state, without knowing where she'll sleep next or when she'll have her next meal."Somehow, I always stumble upon the best people in the world," said Ho.The 23-year-old "bladress" does not accept money just food and a place to sleep.Rollerblading about 700 miles a day, Ho says since she started, each night a stranger has opened up their home for her to rest."Every day I feel like everyone is my family, and this is how the world should be," Ho said.Her greater goal is to raise ,000 to sponsor 130 girls in Kenya and Uganda to go to secondary school."They can contribute to the scholarship that I am raising funds for other girls to be able to go to school and chase their dreams," said Ho.Follow Yanise Ho on her journey by visiting her Facebook page. 1551

(KGTV) - Homicide detectives are investigating the discovery of a man's body on the bayside of the Silver Strand near a bird sanctuary. The report of the remains was received about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Coronado police said.Sheriff's homicide investigators responded to the scene in the 7700 block of Silver Strand Blvd., along with Coronado police.The deceased 47-year-old man was found in between the bike lane and the water line, Coronado Police said.There was no immediate report of the person's identity or circumstances of the death. 565
