SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A western harvest mouse found in Escondido tested positive for the potentially deadly hantavirus, San Diego County Vector Control officials announced Friday.The mouse was found during routine monitoring of the area. Since January, Vector Control has collected multiple mice that have tested positive for the virus in areas of north and east county, including Julian, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Boulevard, 4S Ranch, Warner Springs and Potrero.With each instance, county officials have reminded residents to avoid sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings, which can push the virus into the air. Instead, residents are advised to use so-called "wet cleaning" methods like a diluted bleach spray, disinfectants or a sponge and a mop to clean up wild rodent matter like urine, feces and saliva. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly posed as a maintenance worker in order to burglarize residences across San Diego County was charged Thursday with burglary and other felonies that could have him facing more than 300 years in prison.Corey Henson, 45, is suspected in burglaries in San Diego, La Mesa, El Cajon, Vista and San Ysidro that occurred between August of last year and this February.Deputy District Attorney Daniel Shim said Henson could face 339 years and four months to life if convicted of all counts, due to numerous prior convictions, which include burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who wounded an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander by opening fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago was convicted of assault with a firearm Thursday in his third trial in the case. Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017 shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention. Pitoau was also convicted of a lesser charge of assault on Philpot's younger sibling, Joshua, who Pitoau initially got into an argument with on Island Avenue near Sixth Avenue just after 1 a.m. RELATED: Gaslamp deputy shooting suspect escapes Spring Valley SWAT standoffSentencing is scheduled for Dec. 11. Pitoau was convicted in a prior trial of three felony firearm possession counts and was sentenced to 27-years-to-life for those convictions. However, both of his previous trials in the case resulted in hung juries regarding the assault charges. Jason Philpot testified that he tried to wrap his arms around Pitoau and get the gun away, but the defendant was able to pull the trigger, wounding the deputy in the chest and right arm. A second round also passed through his right arm. One of the rounds ricocheted off the sidewalk and struck Shvets. Pitoau testified that he grabbed a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Philpot, were advancing on him. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An El Cajon man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for distributing fentanyl, some of which caused the fatal overdose of a former player for the San Diego Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club.Christopher Glenn Emison, 33, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a distribution of fentanyl count for selling more than 40 grams of the drug, some of which led to the death of 45-year-old Derrick Hotchkiss in his San Diego home on April 11, 2019.A co-defendant, 34-year-old San Diego resident Jeffrey Alden Blair, pleaded guilty in February and is due to be sentenced next month.Prosecutors say Hotchkiss had text messages on his phone indicating Emison sold him fentanyl the night before his death.Shortly after Hotchkiss' death, investigators searched Emison's home and vehicle and seized fentanyl, heroin residue, firearms, ammunition and other items indicating drug sales.Prosecutors say Emison admitted to knowing the fentanyl was dangerous and apparently sent text messages to Hotchkiss to warn him of the drug's strength but never received a response."Selling drugs is not a victimless crime. Selling drugs is a root cause of crime, cartel violence, the destruction of families and in this case, death," said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver crashed into a house in the Miramar Ranch North area of San Diego Saturday morning and was hospitalized with life threatening injuries.The man was driving his 2014 Hyundai eastbound in the 11700 block of Cypress Canyon Road when he made a left turn onto the 11500 block of Sun Ray Court about 12:30 a.m., according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department."As (the driver) was turning, he made an unsafe movement to his left, lost control and crashed into a house," Heims said.The driver was taken to a hospital with major head and face injuries, considered to be life threatening, Heims said.DUI was suspected and the crash was being investigated by SDPD Traffic Division.The name of the driver was not disclosed.No other injuries were reported. 817
