No suicide note was found, but incoherent sentences were found in a book recovered on the scene, the source said. The man died from his injuries; no one else was hurt in the incident, a Secret Service spokesperson said. The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.Burgess' remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, the police department said.President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, at the time and were scheduled to return to Washington on Saturday afternoon for the annual Gridiron Club Dinner."We are aware of the incident," deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said after the shooting. "The President has been briefed. I refer you to the Secret Service for any more information."The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation, the Secret Service spokesperson said. The Secret Service said Saturday that pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House was affected by the incident.Law enforcement personnel spent about four hours Saturday afternoon searching a maroon Honda Accord with an Alabama license plate parked on the street near the Capital Hilton hotel, a few blocks from the White House. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican National Convention is aiming to recast the story of Donald Trump's presidency over its four nights of events this coming week. Trump campaign officials involved with the planning process tell The Associated Press that the theme of the convention is “Honoring the Great American Story” and will feature speakers drawn from everyday life as well as cable news and the White House. The primary aim will be to draw a stark contrast with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Trump is looking to shift the campaign away from being a referendum on a presidency ravaged by a pandemic and economic collapse and toward a choice between vastly different visions of America's future. 719

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joe Biden is projected to win the presidential election and become the 46th president of the United States, according to The Associated Press. Watch President-elect Joe Biden address the nation below. The win is historical in several ways. At 77 years old, Biden is now the oldest president-elect in U.S. history. The defeat over President Donald Trump also marks the first time an incumbent president has lost in the U.S. since George H.W. Bush was ousted by Bill Clinton in 1992.Biden's running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, will also become the first female vice president in the nation's history, as well as the first African American VP and the first person of South Asian descent to hold the office.“Don’t tell me it’s not possible in the United States. It’s long overdue,” President-elect Biden said Saturday night of electing Kamala Harris as Vice President. “Once again, America has bent the arc of the universe more toward justice."During Saturday night's remarks, Vice President-elect Harris started with remarks about democracy. “America’s democracy is not guaranteed, it is only as strong as our will to fight for it, to guard it, and never take it for granted," said Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. She also had a strong message for women and girls who were watching."While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last," Harris said. The projected victory comes four days after Election Day. The former vice president earned enough votes in crucial battleground states to exceed the 270 electoral votes needed to claim victory Saturday.Biden's win in Pennsylvania put him over the 270 threshold and less than an our later, the AP projected he would also win Nevada, bringing him to a total of 290 electoral votes.Along with the Keystone State, Biden was able to pull Michigan and Wisconsin back into the Democrats’ corner after the party lost the upper Midwest states known as the “blue wall” in the 2016 presidential election.Saturday night, Biden had a message of unity and said he would focus on bringing the country together in his time in office."To make progress, we have to stop treating our opponents as our enemies. They are not our enemies, they are Americans," President-elect Biden said. “I’ll work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me as those who did.”He added, "We have an opportunity to defeat despair," and said there is nothing Americans have "tried that we cannot accomplish." Biden released the following statement about his projected win: 2521

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden is nominating the education commissioner in Connecticut to serve as secretary of the Department of Education. After initial reports, Biden confirmed Tuesday that he would like Miguel Cardona to take over the role that Secretary Betsy DeVos has held since President Donald Trump took office in 2017.Watch Biden introduce Cardona below:Cardona has served as his state’s commissioner of education since August 2019. Before that, he served as assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in Meriden, according to Connecticut State Colleges and Universities. The 45-year-old began his career as an elementary school teacher and served as a school principal for 10 years. He also taught for four years as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Educational Leadership.Cardona is a low-profile candidate who The Washington Post says has pushed to reopen schools and hasn’t been aligned with any particular side in recent education policy battles. When schools moved to remote learning this year, The Associated Press reports Cardona hurried to deliver more than 100,000 laptops to students across The Constitution State. In his announcement, Biden said Cardona will lead the administration’s efforts to invest in all students, support educators, and make reopening schools safely a national priority. They hope to safely reopen the majority of classrooms within the first 100 days of Biden’s term.Biden says Cardona will strive to eliminate long-standing inequities and close racial and socioeconomic opportunity gaps — as well as expand access to community colleges, training and public four-year colleges and universities to improve student success and grow a stronger middle class.Cardona’s parents are from Puerto Rico. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be another diverse member of the administration’s Cabinet, which Biden has promised will be the most diverse in U.S. history.Biden issued this statement about Cardona: 2012
