SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s one of San Diego’s most iconic parks, but there’s a push to change its name and possibly everything it stands for.In September, two very different sides clashed at Chicano Park. The clash required police to break it up.The park is the heart of Barrio Logan and its murals are a colorful reminder of its history.Jorge Gonzales says it’s symbolic of the civil rights movement of the 70s. “These murals tell the story of the Civil Rights era. Right? That went far and beyond Barrio Logan and Chicano Park,” said Gonzales.Five people questioned that history in September at what was called the Patriotic Picnic.Police had to protect them from dozens of people who surrounded them in protest. “The murals are revolutionary. They're anti-American,” said activist Roger Ogden.Ogden was at the picnic and says political radicals and militants run Chicano Park. “It shouldn't be called Chicano Park. They could call it Hispanic Park, Latino Park and celebrate all the Hispanics and not just the militants. If you go down there and wave the US Flag, if I go down there I'm probably going to get beat up.”Ogden and several others shared the video from the picnic and their thoughts with the San Diego City Council on Tuesday.“You can celebrate the Hispanic culture but it should be broader and more inclusive. A lot of Hispanics wouldn't want to be called Chicano because it has a militant aspect to it,” said Ogden.Gonzales says the patriotic picnickers need to have a conversation with someone who understands the murals and who can translate the stories behind the paint.“I think there's a lot of miseducation. People have eyes and love for this park,” said Gonzales.That conversation could become another colorful reminder of the park’s history. 1771

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds welcomed veterans home Sunday from their honor flight to the nation's capital where they visited war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery and other landmarks.Sixty-four veterans from WWII and the Korean War flew out Friday. The Honor Flights are free for veterans. Each trip costs 0,000 and relies on donations.Joining the veterans are escorts who will spend the weekend supporting the veterans, guiding them and making sure everything goes smoothly.WATCH: Honor Flight San Diego celebrates life of WWII veteran who died on tripThe veterans include Purple Heart recipients, a former German Prisoner of War, a veteran who served on D-day, according to the non-profit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jalen McDaniels, San Diego State University basketball's sophomore forward, was accused of filming consensual sex acts with a classmate in 2016 without her knowledge and sharing it with friends, according to a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washington.The civil suit alleges McDaniels recorded the intimate moments with an 18-year-old female student while they were both seniors at Federal Way High School near Tacoma, Wash.The lawsuit goes on to say while McDaniels later told the plaintiff about the unauthorized recordings and that he had shared it with his friends, she learned from other students that the video became widely circulated. When she confronted McDaniels, he explained he had gotten away with a similar incident involving another female student, according to the lawsuit.The plaintiff's attorney, Joan Mell, who filed the suit, wrote her client has suffered from several self-destructive behaviors as a result, including attempting suicide.SDSU is accused of wrongdoing in the lawsuit as well.Mell alleges in the lawsuit that SDSU was contacted by Washington police to provide them with McDaniels' phone number, but failed to do so. The suit says SDSU, instead, alerted former basketball coach Steve Fisher, who secured McDaniels a lawyer, and McDaniels refused to cooperate.The suit goes on to allege McDaniels' refusal to cooperate and, "that others concealed his wrongdoing prevented prompt criminal investigation and referral to the prosecutor's office for timely filing of criminal charges under Washington’s criminal offense of distribution of intimate images."In a statement, SDSU said there would be "no change in [McDaniels'] status at the university" at this time, after an investigation by Washington authorities resulted in no charges before McDaniels' enrollment at the school: 1837
