A lawsuit has been filed against the food delivery driver accused of stabbing a local restaurant owner.On Oct. 27, 2018, Mackie Allen was waiting in the parking lot for his DoorDash delivery run to be ready. Roma Deli & Restaurant owner Fabio Coppola came out and knocked on his window to let Allen known the food was ready — that’s when he says Allen became hostile. Once inside, Coppola says the DoorDash driver started screaming obscenities at him. Despite his efforts to calm him down, Copolla said he would file a complaint against DoorDash because of Allen’s behavior. That’s when Allen allegedly lost it, pulled out a pocket knife and slashing Coppola’s left hand. The owner says he ran for his life, and that Allen then stabbed him in the ribs below the heart and in the back multiple times outside. It’s believed Allen then delivered the food from Roma Deli to the DoorDash customer. “This is a life or death situation,” says Donavin Britt, self-defense expert. Britt has been teaching folks how to protect themselves at Las Vegas Krav Maga for years and knows all too well the dangers the food service industry faces now more than ever.“You have to devise a plan, all business owners out there are known to carry cash, you’re moving back and forth, you’re dealing with unruly customers,” says Britt.“You got to be ready to take them down or run as fast as you can.” With food delivery services on the rise like DoorDash and Uber Eats, Britt believes the threat is amplified. The attorney representing Copolla and his wife are holding DoorDash accountable, and claims Allen had prior felony convictions. Attorney Richard Schofeld says “DoorDash's flawed background check policy almost cost Mr. Coppola his life. Whether or not to vaccinate children against measles by using the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) shot was a debate in Washington Wednesday.Two of the nation’s leading health experts, who expressed confusion at the growing numbers of people choosing not to vaccinate against measles, testified before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Nancy Messonnier believe a spread of misinformation among those pockets of people against vaccinating is the culprit. A common argument from anti-vaxx groups is that the vaccine can cause brain swelling in children. The two health officials clarified that in rare instances with underlying immune deficiencies, an MMR vaccine is not recommended. Dr. Messonnier says a doctor would be able to determine if a child fell into that category. Amid the national debate, a Texas state representative is now pushing for legislation that would allow more parents to opt out of vaccines, arguing to the Texas Observer that if a child gets measles, parents could simply use "antibiotics and that kind of stuff" to prevent deaths. A jury of seven men and five women has been selected for Harvey Weinstein's rape trial after an arduous, two-week process in which scores of people were dismissed because they had already made up their minds about the disgraced Hollywood mogul. Opening statements are expected Wednesday in the case against the 67-year-old Weinstein. During jury selection, prosecutors had accused Weinstein's lawyers of systematically trying to keep young women off the panel, though the final makeup of the jury Friday turned out to be more closely balanced. A global agency says COVID-19, better known as coronavirus, could make the world economy shrink this quarter. That would be a first since the international financial crisis more than a decade ago. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says the world economy is still expected to grow overall this year and rebound next year. But it lowered its forecasts Monday for global growth in 2020 in a special report about the effect of the coronavirus. It said China's reduced production is hitting Asia particularly hard, and economists worry that as the disease spreads worldwide, it will cause more quarantines and create more concern among consumers. Consumer fear could cause people to cancel travel plans, avoid stores and stay home from work.It urged governments to act fast to prevent contagion and restore consumer confidence — both economically by lowering interest rates and by instituting health policies that will prevent the spread of the virus. 982
