BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan Monday pledged to work with Cuba to lift the friendly bilateral relationship to a new level.Wang made the remarks while meeting with Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba.Cabrisas is in China to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations.Cuba was the first Latin American nation to forge diplomatic relations with China, in 1960.Wang spoke highly of the development of China-Cuba ties over the past half a century, noting that the two countries have always supported each other and enjoyed frequent high level visits.China will work with Cuba to expand win-win cooperation and strengthen economic and trade links with a view to further advancing bilateral ties, Wang said.Wang said China will continue to help Cuba within its capacity.Cabrisas thanked China for offering economic and technological assistance to his country.He said Cuba will make concerted efforts with China to promote pragmatic cooperation in various sectors while pushing forward the existing sound bilateral relationship.

ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. GUANGZHOU, Sept. 8 (Xinhua)-- The tenth tropical storm this year might strike southeast China Thursday night or Friday, bringing waves as high as six meters, said local flood control officials Wednesday.The storm could make landfall in the coastal areas between eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian Provinces, said Guangdong Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement.The storm was tracked at 21 degrees north latitude and 119.4 degrees east longitude in the South China Sea at 6 p.m. For the next 12 hours, it is expected to move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour, said the statement.Further, the storm was packing wind gusts of 72 kilometers per hour near its center at 6 p.m. Torrential rains of 30 to 80 mm are expected in central and eastern Guangdong if landfall is made.Headquarters officials have asked fishing boats to stay clear of the waters east of the Pearl River estuary. Checks on reservoirs should also be beefed up, they said.

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), jumped 113 basis points, or 0.17 percent, Tuesday to a new record high at 6.6997 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Tuesday's yuan central parity against U.S. dollar beat the previous record of 6.7110 per U.S. dollar on Monday and extended the Chinese currency's gains to eight consecutive trading days.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Tuesday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 1.87 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.According to Tuesday's central parity rates, the yuan's value strengthened against all the currencies within its basket with lower rates.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 8.7522 Tuesday, lower from 8.7595 Monday.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 7.8204 Tuesday, compared with 7.8275 Monday.The Chinese currency soared 814 basis points against the British pound with the central parity rate being set at 10.42 from Monday's 10.5014.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.
