SAN DIEGO (AP) — Former Congressman Darrell Issa is poised to end a political retirement that started only last year when he lost his seat in a Democratic wave that turned over seven Republican-held California districts. Issa scheduled a news conference for Thursday and will announce he's seeking the seat held by fellow Republican and longtime-U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, who is running for re-election while under indictment on corruption charges, said Larry Wilske, a retired Navy SEAL and Republican also running in Hunter's San Diego-area district.In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Wilske said Issa told him he will run. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 21-year-old man who used social media to convince a 14-year-old girl to send him sexually explicit photos, telling her to take a "leap of faith" to meet and have sex with him, is facing years in federal prison when he's sentenced in January, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday.Jurors found Isaiah Smallwood-Jackson guilty of production of child pornography and enticement of a minor. The federal convictions reached Thursday-- in a case investigated by the Oceanside Police Department -- trigger mandatory minimum sentences of 15 and ten years, respectively, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.According to evidence presented at trial, Smallwood-Jackson began communicating with the girl using the Spotafriend social media application. He admitted during chats with the victim -- whose profile listed her true age of 14 -- that he was 21 years old and didn't care that she was a minor.Using the internet, Smallwood-Jackson discussed sexual acts he wanted to perform with the girl and convinced her to produce and send him sexually explicit pictures and provide her address, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Mandy Griffith.The girl repeatedly told Smallwood-Jackson that she was not sure she wanted to meet with him, but he told her to take a "leap of faith." The defendant then traveled to her home, convinced her to come outside, and had sex with her, according to prosecutors.In texts afterward, Smallwood-Jackson apologized for hurting the minor victim. She confided in her sister, who contacted law enforcement."Internet predators beware: the Department of Justice is committed to striking back against repugnant crimes against innocent children," said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. But the garage has also become a source of frustration among them - and in some cases, much worse. Numerous city employees told 10News that the elevators often breakdown, especially when it rains. That forces some of them to walk up 10 flights of stairs after a day's work - instead of waiting longer for the elevators that are working.But a notice posted on the city's website paints a much darker picture. It says the city has responded to more than 200 calls for service for the elevators in the last year, and that breakdowns have increased 20 percent in the last six months. "The elevators have now become unsafe," the notice says. "There is the increased possibility of persons being trapped in a broken-down elevator, needing immediate medical attention and not being able to get it."Additionally, the permit posted in one elevator is two years expired."I'm going to zip up there and hopefully everything wil work out fine," said Andy Jones, of Scripps Ranch, who parked on the 10th floor in a visit to City Hall. "That's a lot of stairs to climb."City spokeswoman Nicole Darling said the elevators are safe and routinely inspected. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 59-year-old woman suffered a fractured back when she was struck by a hit-and-run motorist in the Clairemont Mesa West community of San Diego, a police officer said Sunday.The woman was crossing westbound in the south crosswalk when she was hit a little before 6:25 p.m. Saturday by a vehicle that had been going westbound on Derrick Drive and made a left turn to southbound Genesee Avenue, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.Police had no description of the vehicle or the motorist. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that erupted in the attic of a Rancho Penasquitos home early Monday displaced seven residents, but nobody was hurt.The blaze was reported shortly after 12:45 a.m. at the two-story house in the 8400 block of Corte Fragata, off Carmel Mountain Road north of state Route 56, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.One person in the home told dispatchers the residents smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from the attic, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. Crews knocked down the fire within 25 minutes and kept the flames contained to the attic area, but the house sustained smoke damage, she said.The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- four adults and three children -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 821
