Director of Scientific Engagement Rebecca Edelmayer says the disease causes progressive memory and function loss due to nerve cell death that happens in the brain. This leads to stages of dementia.“Dementia are those symptoms that people are experiencing outwardly," Dr. Edelmayer said. "So this could be changes in their memory or their thinking. It could also be changing in their personality or some of their behaviors. Like they may have issues with depression, or agitation, or even sleep disturbances.”Currently, there’s no treatment for Alzheimer’s, but research is moving at a fast pace and Van Why is always thrilled to hear about any new discoveries.“We may not be to the point of the solved vaccine for Alzheimer’s, but these steps are tremendous,” Van Why said.Aside from treatment, preventing the disease in the first place would be substantial progress and getting a yearly flu shot could be an answer.“New research presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference suggests that flu and pneumonia vaccines may be associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Edelmayer said.Fourth-year medical student Albert Amran made the discovery when pulling medical history of nearly 40,000 people in a national database. He says he and his colleagues at McGovern Medical School at UT Health in Houston looked at patients' charts focusing on drug history to see if anything could be repurposed to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The influenza vaccination popped out.“What we’re thinking is happening that as people get older the people who gets shots essentially are keeping their immune systems in shape,” Amran said.However, it should be noted that this research isn’t conclusive. Amran says it’s all very new and needs to be observed in a clinical study. Edelmayer suggests the risk reduction for Alzheimer’s could even be from a completely different factor.“It’s very possible that these are indirect effects," Dr. Edelmayer said. "That people who are getting vaccinated also take care of their health in other ways. And things could really add to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.”Amran says the next step is seeing if these findings can be confirmed in different populations. In the meantime, families feeling the effects of Alzheimer’s are doing what they can to help the ones they love while waiting for a treatment or cure.“I am trying my best to stay in the house or with Sam. Mike Murphy was on patrol around 2 a.m. when he got a radio call reporting people in dark clothing tagging along Heart Drive."Saw three males with dark clothing. Hit them with a spotlight and told them to have a seat, which they all did," said Sgt. Murphy.Two other patrol officers were called to the scene. The three men in their late 20s had spray paint under their nails, with fresh paint on the sidewalk and the wall of a business. Sgt. Murphy decided to take a closer look."I saw messages, not of hate, but of peace and love ... the peace sign and 'BLM.' Just had a discussion. 'You're not trying to say anything mean or hateful. Why did you choose a wall?' I understand the frustration of everything going on. Talked about, if this happened to their house, would they be upset? They apologized, and all agreed the avenue they chose was a wrong one. And they came up with, 'What if we fix this?' I said, 'I'd like to help you with that,'" said Sgt. Murphy.Sgt. Murphy, who says he had enough to make an arrest, decided to let them go and asked them meet at the same location that same evening, where he would help them clean up."Having them arrested, how is that going to help the message they're trying to put out? DUNCAN, Okla. -- Rural hospitals faced unique challenges preparing for a rush of COVID-19 patients. From financial struggles to attaining PPE, smaller facilities did everything they could to get ready.One regional hospital in Oklahoma has waited for months for coronavirus cases to flood their emergency room, but that wave of patients is just now starting to trickle in.“We saw cases increasing, but as of now, it hasn’t come to Duncan quite like we expected,” said Dr. Michael Hemphill, a pulmonary and critical care physician and Duncan Regional’s Director of the ICU.As coronavirus cases overload emergency rooms across the country, this rural hospital—one of few medical centers in Southern Oklahoma—has only seen a handful of cases. After the holiday weekend, their facility is starting to see cases increase.As they wait for the surge, the fear of what would happen if beds or supplies ran out looms over the staff.“The most difficult thing is, there’s not a lot of backup,” said Hemphill. “I’m the only pulmonogist in Duncan,” he said.So, the hospital gathered as much personal protective equipment as possible—preparing for the worst.Chief Nursing Officer Kristen Webb said it’s been tougher to get critical supplies as a smaller hospital.“The last time we were able to receive N95’s was probably in December,” said Webb. She said they needed them again come February, but were never able to fill any of the orders they placed.When she was able to find supplies, she spent every penny she could to make sure staff would be safe.“We probably spent close to a million dollars on equipment, PPE, or other supplies and equipment towards a pandemic that we didn’t fully realize at this point,” said Webb.That massive expense was made tougher because the hospital had to cancel all elective procedures and appointments.“We spent quite a bit of money at a time where we weren’t bringing in our normal resources,” said Webb.“Rural hospitals are especially financially strained, especially here in Oklahoma, so when everything shut down…our elective procedures shut down. So, there is a financial burden the hospital had to bear,” said Dr. Hemphill.The burden extends past these walls to Jefferson County Hospital. Duncan Regional helps the critical access hospital stay open. It’s a facility with only 18 beds that was on the verge of shutting down just a couple years ago.But if the pandemic hits, that critical access facility and Duncan Regional are the places people will turn to. So it’s necessary these facilities maintain enough revenue to stay open so communities have access to care. 2601

But that doesn't help prevent pre-symptomatic spread"Jha cited a May Swiss study that indicated that between 40 and 60% of all coronavirus cases originated from people when they didn't have symptoms at the time of the spread.The debate comes as a number of states are continuing to see an increase in coronavirus cases.
