SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man died after crashing his car into a ditch overnight Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened on I-5 north near Clairemont in East Mission Bay. Officers say they believe the single-vehicle crash happened sometime overnight, but wasn't reported until the sun came up. According to CHP, the car crashed into a ditch on the side of a freeway. Officers say it's too early to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.  521

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Carlos woman says a buzzing sound caught her off guard at home. When she looked around, she spotted a drone hovering near her bedroom window, peering in.  Yvette Skalka was hanging her laundry in the backyard on September 6 when she heard the noise. She says she looked up and a small, white drone. “It hovered for a good 3 to 5 minutes.  It gave me an uneasy feeling. It didn’t feel right,” said Skalka.The drone flew up to the top of a palm on the property for a few minutes, before flying back down.“It was near three dogs and driving them crazy, like it was tormenting them,” said Skalka.Eventually, the drone flew off.  Skalka filed a police report and posted details on the Nextdoor app.  Another neighbor responded that she believed the same drone has recently hovered near her ground-floor bedroom, watching her college-age daughter.  That family also filed a police report. 956

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos woman's trip to the San Carlos library turned into nightmare after she was bitten by a dog.A large bruise and two puncture marks remain stamped on Tricia Erler's left thigh."I was in total shock," said Erler.On Tuesday afternoon, she had just finished a mind-and-body class inside the library, grabbed some magazines, and was headed into a lounge area to read."I was behind this woman's chair, and she got up abruptly and swung around in one movement ... she sort of fell into me, and I fell into the books. I felt a stabbing pain in my leg. I thought something had stabbed me from her backpack," said Erler.RELATED: Service dog or pet? You're bleeding and there are teeth marks on your leg," said Erler.Nearby, she saw what bit her: a leashed white dog, possibly an Australian Shepard, with black markings on its head. Next to the dog was the woman who had bumped into her. She was in her 20s or 30s with a stocky build. The woman walked out and never came back."I was upset and shaking. You would think you'd be totally safe in a public library," said Erler.Erler just received her second of four shots for a rabies regimen. Definitely feel dogs should be checked," said Erler.Under federal law, dog owners can be asked if the animal is a service dog, but can't be asked for documentation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley.One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley.In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building.If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy.The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla. The store was opened in 1948 when the niece of Ellen B. Scripps along with her husband and son established the business. 1507
