House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will keep the House in session until another round of COVID-19 stimulus passes through Congress.Pelosi made the comments Tuesday morning during an interview on CNBC."We are committed to staying here until we have an agreement — an agreement that meets the needs of the American people," Pelosi said, according to CNN. "We're optimistic that the White House at least will understand that we have to do some things."Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, the chairman of the House Democratic caucus said during a press conference Tuesday that the caucus remains committed to staying in session until Congress passes a "meaningful" stimulus package. The House is slated to remain in session through Oct. 2. Traditionally, lawmakers would then return to their districts to begin campaigning ahead of election day.Congress has passed several COVID-19 stimulus bills since the pandemic reached the U.S. in February. However, key provisions of the largest stimulus bill, the CARES Act, expired weeks ago. Among those were 0 weekly benefits to those on unemployment.Even though unemployment remains historically high in the U.S. both the House and Senate adjourned for their annual August break. In May, the Democrat-led House passed the HEROES Act, a trillion stimulus plan that would, among other things, extend unemployment benefits through the end of the year. That bill has not been considered for passage in the Senate.During his press conference Tuesday, Jeffries said Democrats would be willing to cut the funding they proposed in the HEROES Act by a third. Republican Senators recently introduced a scaled-down stimulus package that was soundly defeated. 1699

If you thought the presidential candidates had plenty of time to convince voters, think again. The swing state of North Carolina is set to start mailing out absentee ballots on Friday, September 4. That means voters will be able to return their ballots as early as next week. RECORD NUMBERS VOTING EARLYNorth Carolina is seeing a record number of absentee ballots because of the pandemic. In 2016. around 200,000 absentee ballots were counted. Already in 2020, the state has received around 600,000 requests. "It’s been kinda tough but we are trying to get through it," Kristen Scott, the elections director in Halifax, North Carolina, said. Scott only has a staff of three. In 2016, her staff received 200 absentee ballot requests. This year they have already received 2,000 and it's only early September. "I do go ahead and tell voters once you get your ballot, it's best to complete it and send it back in," Scott said. NORTH CAROLINA TEST CASEWhat happens next in North Carolina will be an example for other states around the country. Will voters return their ballot right away? Will they wait until the first debate? Additionally, will voters be able to follow all of the directions? For instance, in North Carolina, all absentee ballots must have a valid witness signature. During a pandemic will voters be able to find a witness? If it's not there, the ballot will be rejected. "In the primary, we saw about 15 percent of absentee ballots rejected," Allison Griggs with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, said. Griggs fears the election could depend on whether voters follow directions or not. In North Carolina, election officials are allowed to contact voters if they find an error with their ballot prior to the polls closing. Griggs advises all Americans to be on the lookout for phone calls from election officials just in case. "We need voters to keep an eye out for communications from their county election officials," Griggs said. To find out when your state may send out absentee ballots, click here. 2033

Hundreds gathered at a house party in Howell Township on Sunday, less than a week after New Jersey tightened indoor gathering restrictions because of an increase in the rate of coronavirus transmission.Local police asked for help from Wall, Brick, Jackson, Freehold, Monmouth, and Ocean County Sheriffs and State Police because of the large number of people at the party. There were about 300 people at the party."Most of the attendees are compliant," police said. "Others are hesitant and are directing their anger towards the host who charged admission."Police arrested the host."At one point, we probably had about 500 people here," said Howell Police Sgt. Christian Antunez. "When we got here there were party buses dropping people off."Police said there was admission to get in — for women and for men."Some paid up to 0 for a cabana rental," said Antunez.A flier advertising the pool party on Wilson Drive lists prices and a DJ."I was in disbelief," said Pam Borges, who struggled to get into her own neighborhood when police blocked off all the streets. "My neighbors were talking about them urinating on their cars."It took police two hours to break it up.On Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy attributed many coronavirus cases in the state to parties."We believe that some of this increase is attributable to the number of indoor house parties we’ve been seeing across the state. Indoor gatherings are not safe," he said. This story was originally reported by Aliza Chasan and Christie Duffy at WPIX. 1517

How do you re-capture a gigantic runaway pig?According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, deputies received a call on Saturday that a pig "the size of a mini horse" was roaming a local neighborhood.Deputies were quickly able to track down the swine and determined where he lived, but still had to figure out how to corral him and get him home. It turns out, pigs don't need to be corralled if there are Doritos on hand.According to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office, Deputy Ponce had a bag of Doritos on hand in her lunch box and was able to lure the pig back to his home by laying a trail of chips on the street. The pig made it safely home and deputies were able to secure the gate. Ponce called the journey "fun."The Doritos appeared to be of the Cool Ranch variety. It's unclear if the pig would have been swayed by Nacho Cheese chips.  880
