PRETORIA, South Africa, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Thursday called here for concerted efforts to make the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) stronger and to boost the development of the new type of China- Africa strategic partnership.Addressing a seminar marking the 10th anniversary of the establishment of FOCAC, Xi proposed to strengthen strategic planning, practical cooperation and institution building of FOCAC so as to make it a solid base for political mutual trust, a major engine driving common development and an efficient and mature platform for China-Africa cooperation.Meanwhile, more cultural and people-to-people exchanges should be conducted to make FOCAC an emotional bond to deepen China- Africa traditional friendship, said Xi.Xi stressed that China and African countries have to continue to respect, trust and support each other and treat each other as equals. The two sides should stand at a strategic high as they draw plans for the development of China-Africa relations, and should have closer dialogue and consultation within the FOCAC framework, enhance coordination and cooperation on global issues of mutual interest, strive to increase the say and representation of developing countries in the international system, and ensure better development of both China and Africa as the international configuration further evolves.Referring to China-Africa cooperation, Xi said it should be expanded to new areas and brought to higher levels. "We will enlarge the scale of China-Africa trade, and optimize the trade structure. We will cooperate with Africa in infrastructure construction and actively explore cooperation on transnational projects. We will promote export of African goods to China, facilitate investment and technology transfer to Africa, provide more job opportunities for the African people and enhance African countries' capacity in self development so as to bring more benefits to the African people. China will continue to do its best to increase assistance to Africa, optimize the structure of assistance, and focus the assistance projects on education, agriculture, health, poverty reduction and other projects concerning people's lives as well as energy conservation and environmental protection," he said.As new problems and new challenges appearing in the second decade of the 21st century, Xi said China and African countries need to properly handle them and to explore new ways and new thinking for FOCAC development in light of the new conditions and new trends in the world economy and in China-Africa relations."We should be innovative in seeking new development concept and new cooperation model of FOCAC, and give full play to the initiative and creativity of African members of FOCAC. We should strengthen cooperation with the African Union and sub-regional organizations in Africa and actively explore cooperation with other parties in the international community so as to strengthen FOCAC's synergy and influence," said Xi.He also called for expanded contacts and cooperation between the governments in such fields as education, science and technology, culture and tourism, and closer ties between political parties, localities, nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions and the news media.Launched in 2000, FOCAC is a platform for collective consultation and dialogue between China and the states in Africa.

LAS VEGAS, the United States, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China is incredibly important to the success of the global consumer electronics industry, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) told Xinhua in an interview."There is no doubt that China is a growing powerhouse. China is a global leader in manufacturing and the 'made in China' phrase is known around the world. Chinese manufacturing facilities provide jobs and spur growth not just in China, but around the world as more international companies explore doing business in China," Shapiro said during the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which was organized by CEA.The 2011 International CES kicked off here on Thursday with more than 2,700 exhibitors unveiling their latest technology innovations, up from the 2010 CES which featured 2,500 exhibitors. A total of 267 exhibitors from China, including major companies such as Haier and Hisense, will display their products at the show.According to CEA and market research company Gfk research, China is expected to contribute 13 percent of global CE retail revenue in 2010, up from 12 percent in 2009."The Chinese consumer technology market is also critical to the success of the International CES," Shapiro said. "China also ranked 3rd in terms of international attendance at the 2010 CES, with 1,105 Chinese industry professionals."However, while a leader in manufacturing, to become a true world leader China must produce innovative companies with brands that are recognized around the world, Shapiro cautioned."In fact, not one Chinese company is included on the Interbrand annual listing of the top 100 global brands. In order for China to truly compete on a global scale, it must change its outlook on the importance of branding."In recent years, many Chinese companies have come far in building their brands. Haier and Hisense are well-known around the globe. In fact, Hisense's Chairman Zhou Houjian delivered a keynote address at the 2010 CES, marking the first time a Chinese company has keynoted at the International CES."For Chinese companies looking to build their brand, there is no better forum to launch an innovative product than a tradeshow such as the International CES, which is the largest branding event in the world," Shapiro said.Shapiro was also optimistic with the prospect of the consumer electronics industry. After a down year in 2009, the consumer electronics industry grew 13 percent last year and is expected to grow an additional 10 percent this year to 964 billion dollars, thanks in large part to demand for smartphones and notebook computers, the CEA forecast. The group expects electronics sales to grow in all major markets around the world but to be especially strong in Western Europe, North America and China."Due to the economic downturn, consumers around the world have been cautious in their purchase patterns. However, CEA research finds that individuals view consumer electronics products as necessities rather than luxury goods, reinforcing the strength of our industry even in a down economy," he said.CEA is a U.S. trade association promoting growth in the consumer technology industry. It represents more than 2,000 corporate members involved in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and integration of consumer electronics products. As a U.S.-based trade association, all CEA members must have offices in the United States, however CEA also has 40 associate member companies based in China.

GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- It is time for the Doha Development Round to begin to center around the Chair-led multilateral process and to come up with a revised text, Sun Zhenyu, the Chinese ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), said on Tuesday at a WTO Trade Negotiation Committee meeting."Time is not with us," Sun said, stressing the need to "plan wisely" in the year ahead to seize the window of opportunity in 2011, which is recognized by both G20 and APEC leaders in early November.Sun commended progress generated from the "Cocktail Approach," which is made up of small-group informal discussions and brainstorming among the ambassadors, carried out throughout the last few months. The brainstorming "paves way for possible progress in quite a few areas such as development, rules and dispute settlement," the Chinese ambassador said."But after all, the brainstorming is not and could not replace negotiating sessions," he added, calling for intensified engagements to deliver the revised texts at the earliest time."One of the major achievements of the G20 Summit in Seoul is that leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to the DDA and directed us as negotiators to engage in across-the-board negotiations to promptly bring the Doha Development Round to a conclusion," the Chinese ambassador said."Across-the-board trade-offs could have a better chance when we have the texts on the table," Sun noted. He also reiterated the stance on honoring the leaders' instructions through "respecting the mandate" and "building on the progress already achieved," in order to achieve a balanced and ambitious outcome. In his speech, Sun gave priority to development as the top outcome of the Doha Round."Above everything, it has to be development-oriented," he said, giving a clear message that China is in favor of addressing the concerns of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Vulnerable Economies (SVEs) as a priority.
