SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Restaurants are feeling backed into a corner after the pandemic forced them to add outdoor seating and Saturday brought cold rain and high winds.As the clouds rolled in, businesses across San Diego braced for impact."We were planning on covering everything up but we were kind of waiting and seeing just how big the storm was going to be," Whiskey Girl Manager Jake Southworth said.In the Gaslamp, he says they've been lucky this weekend, "We were ready to go with more of the tarps, to put out but waited till midnight when we were closed anyway, so definitely dodged a bullet there and today again it looks like it's going to hold off until later so I feel like we're still going to be doing good."Whiskey Girl is on a section of Fifth Avenue that shuts down to vehicle traffic Thursday through Saturday, allowing restaurants to spill into the street and seat more customers.The extra chairs help them stay afloat, but outside the rain and future winter weather are putting a damper on their options.Some businesses put up pop-up shades and umbrellas to provide some shelter against the weather."I mean it does open a lot more seating having outside but we'll see what the weather sends us," Southworth said.Every restaurant is also holding its breath, waiting to see if the county drops into the purple most restrictive tier next week, which would mean no indoor dining at all."How can I ask someone to spend, you know - on a drink if they're sitting outside shivering and the rain's coming through?" Tipsy Crow Director of Operations Nathan Colonero said they would have to close down and let go of their staff.The threat of the purple tier has been hanging over San Diegan's heads for a month and a half.Many businesses are frustrated with the roller coaster of changes, and hopeful a new president will mean changes that will help them through. 1885

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego health officials are working with UCSD to notify people who may have been exposed to tuberculosis at the school’s La Jolla campus.According to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, the period of potential exposure was between January 25 through May 15. Those who are known to have been exposed were notified.“Testing is recommended for all those exposed to assure they are not infected, since they may not have symptoms,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. "For anyone infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent disease.”Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact. Most people who are exposed do not become infected.Symptoms of TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexpected weight loss.No-cost testing will be provided those identified starting May 30 at the campus Student Health Center on Library Walk.The number of annual cases of TB has decreased since the early 90s and has stabilized in recent years. So far in 2018, 64 cases have been reported. 1124

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County and other cities are trying to give businesses and places of worship more options that would allow them to expand into nearby parks, and while some are taking the help, others are finding alternative ways to stay open.Last weekend, in Encinitas, a massive church gathering was organized, with photos of the event posted on social media.At the gathering at Cardiff State Beach, crowds of people were seen singing, praying, and cheering. Most people weren’t wearing masks and not many people were practicing social distancing.RELATED: Concerns over mass crowds gathered for religious gathering at beachThe event was organized by Worship Leader Sean Feucht, but the State Parks Department said the event did not have a permit.That gathering is the type of mass-attendee event that county officials and other local leaders are working to avoid.Earlier this week, county officials warned three local churches after it was reported they were still holding services indoors – a violation of the state’s guidelines for places of worship.In response to the weekend beach gathering, City of Encinitas officials sent ABC 10News a statement saying they are offering temporary commercial use permits for religious services, fitness classes, or other similar types of activities in outdoor recreational areas.RELATED: Health officials warn local churches about holding indoor servicesSeveral weeks ago, Poway leaders launched their own initiative to allow for outdoor operations. Mayor Steve Vaus said they’ve already gotten businesses that are using the park space for fitness classes. Of course, social distancing will have to be followed and masks will be required. And they’ll set aside a space for you. And with proper insurance coverage you can use that space for your activities.”County Supervisor Dianne Jacob is looking to expand this option at the county level. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Padres outfielder Tommy Pham is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after breaking a bone in his left hand during the team’s loss at Arizona Sunday.Padres skipper Jayce Tingler confirmed Pham’s injury during an appearance Monday on MLB Network Radio.The injury happened during Pham’s ninth inning at-bat in Sunday’s game. The left fielder/DH fouled off a pitch and then immediately shook his left hand in apparent pain.Following a visit from the trainer, Pham exited the game, forcing the Padres to put Greg Garcia in to finish the at-bat in the eventual 5-4 loss. The Friars' loss was their fifth in a row.At the time of his injury, Pham was the tied for the MLB lead in stolen bases with six and among the league leaders in walks.
