WASHINGTON — Sometimes, politics gives way to the personal at the White House. It has seen 18 weddings and at least 10 people are known to have died there, including two presidents and three first ladies. It will serve Friday as a place of mourning for President Donald Trump and his family with a private memorial service for the president’s younger brother, Robert, who passed away at 71.The president has described Robert as not just his brother but his "best friend.” In an interview Monday, Trump said that he believed his brother would have been "greatly honored" to receive a White House funeral.Anita McBride, who served in three presidential administrations, including as first lady Laura Bush's chief of staff, says it is completely within the president’s ability to honor him with a service there and that the White House serves a complex mission as an office, a museum and a home. 898

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)—  Hundreds of volunteers and voters attended the “Moms Demand Action” Rally in Vista. They gathered, rallied, and went door to door, advocating for what they call, “common sense gun legislation.” They featured a special guest speaker, Fred Guttenberg, who lost his daughter to an active shooter in Parkland, Florida this February. With only two days left until the deadline of voter registration, volunteers are ramping up their last-minute pushes. 10News followed a few volunteers on their door knocking routes in Vista. They said every step they took was to garner every vote for their cause. “We need to vote like our lives depend on it, because they do,” Wendy Wheatcroft, California Chapter Leader of “Moms Demand Action,” said. It’s something Fred Guttenberg knows all too well. “My daughter was… my life… she’s gone,” he said. His daughter, Jaime Guttenberg, was 14 years old when she was killed at Stoneman Douglas High School. “When you live through what we’ve lived through, it ain’t easy,” Guttenberg said.Guttenberg said since his daughter’s death in February, his life mission has changed. It is now to get people around the country to the polls, and advocate for what he calls “common sense gun legislation.”“I support the 2nd Amendment,” Gutenberg said. “My father-in-law owns guns. I have no problem with legal gun owners. It is an effort to keep weapons out of the hands who intend to kill others.”That is the message he hopes will resonate with voters across the aisle.“I am here today for one reason. It’s to tell people it could have been you, and you better vote,” Guttenberg said. To check your voter registration status, click this LINK. 1738

VISTA (CNS) - An Oceanside man who allegedly fatally struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk while fleeing from another crash was charged Friday with murder, among other charges.Wesley Stuart, 27, was also charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run and drunken driving, and faces 15 years to life in state prison if convicted of all charges stemming from the Tuesday night death of 65-year-old Tran Thanhminh of Oceanside.Police said the initial crash was reported shortly after 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at Douglas Drive and Mission Avenue.RELATED: 65-year-old man killed, driver arrested in Oceanside hit-and-runInvestigators believe Stuart was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and was speeding eastbound on Mission, ran a red light and collided with a Ford F-150 pickup that was northbound on Douglas, Oceanside police Sgt. Rick Davis said. After the crash, the Chevy driver backed up and headed east on Mission, where he struck Thanhminh in a crosswalk, dragging him about 150 feet down the street, the sergeant said.Thanhminh, who died at the scene, was with his wife at the time, though she was not struck, authorities said. The couple had just closed their restaurant for the day and were walking home when he was hit, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, which stated that his wife had already crossed the street when she heard the crash, but did not see her husband when she turned to look into the street.Stuart allegedly continued on Mission before getting out of the pickup at Rancho Del Oro and fleeing on foot with a passenger, Davis said.Officers searched the area with the help of a police helicopter and apprehended the two outside Stuart's home, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.Stuart was arrested. The passenger was detained and later released, Davis said. After pleading not guilty to all charges, Stuart will return to court Jan. 2 for a readiness conference. 1947

WASHINGTON (AP) — Acting in lawsuits involving absentee ballot deadlines in three battleground states, the Supreme Court has allowed extensions for ballots in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to remain in place. But it has refused a plea for a relaxed deadline in Wisconsin. In each case, Democrats backed the extensions, and Republicans opposed them. All three states have Democratic governors and legislatures controlled by the GOP.Last week, the Supreme Court tied 4-4 by upholding the ruling from Pennsylvania's Supreme Court that would allow election officials to receive and count ballots until Nov. 6, even if they don't have a clear postmark. On Wednesday, the justices denied the motion to expedite a review of the state's Republican Party's appeal to exclude mail-in absentee ballots after the elections were over."There is simply not enough time at this late date to decide the question before the election," Justice Samuel Alito said in a statement alongside Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch. "That does not mean, however, that the state court decision must escape our review."Alito added that state officials informed county election boards to segregate ballots received between 8 p.m. on Election Day and 5 p.m. on Nov. 6.At first blush, the different outcomes at the Supreme Court seem odd because the high court typically takes up issues to harmonize the rules across the country. On Wednesday, the justices said absentee ballots in North Carolina could be received and counted up to nine days after Election Day.On Monday, the justices stated that ballots in Wisconsin must be received by Election Day in order to be counted, the Associated Press reported. But elections are largely governed by states, and the rules differ from one state to the next.Justice Amy Coney Barrett did not participate in consideration of either motion, the justices said. 1877

Virgin Galactic is preparing to land among the stars. On Wednesday, Virgin Galactic said they were working on its final preparations at its base in New Mexico as the VSS Unity is scheduled to launch into space from Spaceport America sometime in the fall. The company said the ship would be crewed by two pilots and several research payloads in the cabin.Virgin Galactic says its top priority is safety, so they want to make sure the pilots are prepared for the task at hand.To do just that, they will be using VMS Eve as an in-flight simulator. The pilots will use Eve to practice the identical approach and landing pattern since it's similar to Unity's, Chief Pilot Dave Mackay stated."The cockpit structure of Eve is almost identical to that of Unity: the same pilot seats and windows, as well as very similar flight controls and instruments," Mackay said in the press release. The company will go through a full, planned rehearsal before the VSS Unity takes flight. 973
