SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents and students are concerned after someone found a bullet in a Point Loma High School restroom. The incident was reported on Monday and while students say there was a lack of communication from school staff, word traveled fast on campus. The school says police are now investigating. "We never heard anything over the intercom or anything," says senior Javan Hedrick. "In my 4th period class, it came up out of nowhere. Everyone was talking about some bullet found in the boys bathroom." Around noon, parents received an email sent from the school's principal, that says in part: "At Point Loma, our first priority is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. As such, I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. School Police investigated a report of a bullet found on the floor of the boys restroom. After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat."Some parents pulled their kids out of class and aren't sure when they'll send them back. "I walked into the office, it was a crazy amount of kids trying to go home," says Hedrick. Students say they would have felt a little better if school staff talked to them about the incident. "If something was to happen, no one would of had any idea."The principal is encouraging students to contact Crime Stoppers if they have any information about the incident at 888-580-8477 or text 27463 (CRIMES). All tips are anonymous. 1466

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Photos captured along the shores of San Diego show the return of a bioluminescent glow cause by a phenomenon known as the red tide. Pictures posted on social media show the eerie neon glow. According to several San Diego photographers who captured the phenomenon, the bioluminescence was captured along the shores of La Jolla and Torrey Pines State Beach Wednesday night. The glow is created by an algae bloom called the red tide. The algae bloom is filled with phytoplankton called "dinoflagellates.” The organisms react with bioluminescence when jostled by the moving water. "Where the wave crashes onto the shore, as it rolls over that’s where the turbulence is highest," said Clarissa Anderson at The Scripps Instutition of Oceanography. "That’s why those are really bright stripes of light. We don’t know the exact smoking gun yet. It’s a certain set of environmental conditions."PHOTOS: San Diegans capture 2018 neon glow of red tideAccording to scientists, the blue glow can be created by stepping in the water or by the crash of waves. It’s unclear exactly how long this year’s red tide will last; however, an algae bloom in September of 2013 lasted a week and a bloom in October of 2011 lasted a month, researchers say.According to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the red color of the tide is due to the high number of organisms in the water. 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, the California National Guard confirmed that its service members were recently sent to two San Diego nursing homes that needed help treating residents who were sick with COVID-19.“We supplemented their existing staff- their civilian staff- with our medical teams here in the California National Guard,” Lt. Col. Jonathan Shiroma told ABC10 and said that they were deployed at the direction of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).The National Guard reports that 20 troops were sent to Santee's Stanford Court nursing facility for a week in October and another 20 troops were sent to El Cajon's Villa Las Palmas for two weeks in November.Lt. Col. Shiroma said teams tested patients and staff and offered other supportive care. “Within the Guard we also have many medical professionals so each of the teams were led by either a physician assistant or a registered nurse or an LPN,” he added.“If you have an outbreak, you have staff that has to quarantine and so in order to provide care you want to get people into the building to help with the residents,” Deborah Pacyna with the California Association of Health Facilities told ABC10 News. The CDPH reports that since the start of the pandemic, 50 healthcare workers have tested positive at the El Cajon facility where 91 residents have gotten the virus and 45 healthcare workers have tested positive at the Santee facility where 58 residents have contracted COVID-19.The National Guard said that it doesn't have any current missions in San Diego but it's always ready. “If something comes in the next few weeks and there’s a need in any part of the state, the California National Guard will respond appropriately,” added Lt. Col. Shiroma.ABC10 News reached out to both nursing facilities for comment. We are waiting for a reply. 1829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are looking into an apparent road rage-related chase and collision involving two women that spanned the length of Interstate 8 between Mission Valley and Ocean Beach.Officers said the women were traveling more than 100 mph on westbound I-8 in Mission Valley before they exited in the Ocean Beach area. When both women got to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, police said the driver of a silver car rammed the other driver’s white SUV several times. The SUV then forced the other car to collide with a center divide. The SUV’s driver got out of her vehicle and confronted the other driver; she reportedly told police she pepper-sprayed the silver car’s driver because she became aggressive.ABC 10News learned the pepper sprayed driver told police that she and the other woman were dating the same man. However, the SUV’s driver claimed she did not know the silver car’s driver. There is no word if anyone was arrested, as police are still trying to sort out the details. 991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New information from the Census Bureau shows that San Diego’s housing growth isn’t keeping up with our growth in population.Within the year spanning between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, San Diego saw its population increase by nearly 13,000 people.According to the Census Bureau, though the population has increased, the number of new homes being built is actually slowing down. When you compare housing growth between 2000 and 2007 and housing growth between 2010 and 2017, San Diego County saw a major decrease in growth of new housing. San Diego was also ranked the 11th most populated city in the United States, according to the new data.
