As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the restaurant industry is one of the first starting to deal with a second round of closures.Restaurant owners and employees are starting to fear the losses that could come as a result. For example, the restaurant Eden in Chicago opened its doors in 2016. But the first week of March, it was on pace to have its best quarter since opening. Owner Jodi Fyfe said so much changed a week later.“At that time, we had 526 employees. If you look at it today, we have 24,” said Fyfe.In March, she had to start laying off more than 90 percent of her workers and despite reopening over the summer, she couldn't afford to keep her staff on the payroll and pay the restaurant rent.Looking at the business potential over the winter was bleak. COVID-19 cases were projected to rise, and a potential second round of restaurant closure mandates would be even more financially devastating.In August, Fyfe made a tough, but what she felt was a necessary decision.“Essentially, we had to close the restaurant and that was like a death,” she said. “It was like the death of a family member.”Fyfe focused on keeping her other business, catering, afloat, while now seeing the reality she feared. As many as 7,500 restaurants just in Illinois may have to close permanently as a result of a recent indoor dining ban.“It is becoming devastating,” said Sam Toia, who is with the Illinois Restaurant Association.Toia worries about the effect on both restaurant owners and employees.“If things don’t change with no indoor dining or no stimulus bill, 66 percent of the restaurants feel they could be out of business within the next four months,” Toia added.This week, the National Restaurant Association sent a letter to governors and mayors across the country, stating in part it has “not found any systemic outbreaks of COVID-19 from the hundreds of thousands of restaurants around the country that operate within the Association's guidance.”The association is urging officials to reconsider current bans and future ones based on the data.“We are such a vital part of serving an underserved community, finding them jobs, finding them a livelihood,” said Sean Kennedy with the National Restaurant Association. “When we shut down, a lot of folks do not have the transferable skills that they can apply elsewhere. The restaurant industry really needs to stay strong so we can take care of these people.”Roughly 2 million restaurant workers are currently out of work, and further closures mean even more will be unemployed. Andy Parker, whose daughter Alison was killed on live television during a news report two years ago, said Thursday he was considering running for the seat of retiring Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte.Parker has been an outspoken critic of Goodlatte, the powerful chairman of the House judiciary committee, for his longstanding ties with the National Rifle Association. Parker's daughter lived in Goodlatte's district, and the father has pushed for gun control ever since she was killed.Parker said he's been talking with his family about the possibility of running for the seat as a Democrat. Parker lives outside the district, and if he were to run and win, his family would have to move."I've got some time to ponder it," Parker said.Parker said he was at the dentist's office Thursday morning when his daughter's boyfriend, Chris Hurst, texted him with the news about Goodlatte's retirement. Hurst on Tuesday won a seat in the Virginia statehouse."I feel like the dog chasing the car and finally caught it," Parker said of Goodlatte not seeking re-election. "I'm just glad to see the guy is finally going to get out of office."Parker said he joked with his wife, Barbara, that she should run, but she immediately ruled out that possibility.The father has been an outspoken advocate for his daughter, who was shot to death during a live broadcast in August 2015. (AP) — A Los Angeles police detective has been charged with secretly videotaping dozens of men inside a restroom at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.The Anaheim city attorney's office says 42-year-old Ryan Caplette was charged Friday with 75 misdemeanor counts.Prosecutors allege that Caplette was the man seen videotaping inside a stadium bathroom on June 8. He was off-duty at the time. Caplette was released after being placed under a citizen's arrest.Prosecutors allege that Caplette videotaped at least 37 people that day.Caplette is charged with disorderly conduct that includes peeping with intent to invade privacy, secretly videotaping in a restroom and loitering.Caplette couldn't immediately be reached for comment. He has a court appearance scheduled for July 22.An LAPD spokesman says Caplette has been assigned to paid home duty. 859

Any pet owner will tell you that living with a pet comes with benefits, including constant companionship, love and affection."A 2016 survey by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute found that nearly 75% of the animal owners they talked with reported mental health improvements from their furry family member.With a global pandemic keeping many of us isolated, is now the time to adopt a pet?"I adopted Sake from the Arizona Humane Society on July 1," said Scottsdale dog owner Randi Chan.Chan said she immediately brought a dog trainer into the mix and created a structured routine, something she did not have just a few months ago."Before I had her, I was probably working like 12 hours every day," Chan said. "Because... I'll take a break for dinner and then I'll be like, 'Well I have nothing better to do. I've already watched everything on Netflix, so I'll guess I'll start working again.'"She knew that likely was not very positive for her mental health.Now, Chan gets fluffy hugs and a reason to get outside safely for their walks."If anything, the pandemic has just raised awareness to the importance of both adoption and fostering," said Arizona Humane Society's Bretta Nelson.They have moved to appointment-only for their adoptions. Once a prospective pet parent sets up their time slot, a representative from the shelter will call them ahead of time to go over what animals they may be interested in."We think with this one-on-one match-making process, you can talk to people about a pet's medical or their behavioral, and they weren't already attached before learning that information," Nelson explained. "So, they were able to make a logical decision."That has helped their return rate for pets drastically decrease, while the number of families fostering has sky-rocketed.However, most people will have to return to work at some point and the pets will have to be left behind.Nelson said that a structured routine that is created the first time they come home will make that transition easier."Set a routine that's going to work, even when you're back at work," Nelson said. Another nationwide retailer is filing for bankruptcy amidst the pandemic.Stein Mart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections Wednesday, citing the current situation in retail during the coronavirus pandemic.“The combined effects of a challenging retail environment coupled with the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have caused significant financial distress on our business,” said Hunt Hawkins, Chief Executive Officer of Stein Mart, Inc. in a statement from the company. “The Company lacks sufficient liquidity to continue operating in the ordinary course of business. I would like to thank all of our employees for their dedication and support.”Stein Mart says they expect to close most, if not all, of their 281 stores and they have launched a “store closing and liquidation process.” The first store opened in 1908 in Mississippi.The discount department store says they are looking at possibly selling their website and intellectual property during the Chapter 11 process.Stein Mart adds to the list of several retailer who have announced bankruptcy filings or closings, including Tuesday Morning, JCPenney, Sur La Table, Mens Warehouse, Ann Taylor and Lord & Taylor. 1199
