SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the first questions San Diegans had after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Southern California: Where was the alert?Exactly one week ago, San Diego phones buzzed in unison for a test of California’s Earthquake Early Warning System, ShakeAlert. The system aims to help alert locals seconds before an earthquake hits to find shelter.Thursday, no alert went out when San Diego felt shaking.RELATED: 6.4-magnitude earthquake rattles July 4th for Southern CaliforniaThe San Diego County Office of Emergency Services says the alert system is still in the testing phase. Currently, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services is evaluating the data collected from the June 27 test.The state hopes to set up the system in the future in the same way Amber Alerts are sent out regionally. Before that can happen, the county says they need to make sure the system works fast enough to alert residents, the county says.Many San Diegans, however, say they didn't even receive the test message last week. For them, the county asks for feedback to work out the bugs in the system. Los Angeles city officials say their alert didn't go off because the earthquake wasn't recorded above a 5.0-magnitude shake within Los Angeles County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police body-worn cameras captured the parents of Trevor Heitmann pleading with officers to hospitalize their son just hours before he killed himself and two others in a high-speed car crash.In August 2018, Trevor Heitmann, known on his popular YouTube channel as McSkillet, ultimately drove the wrong way down the 805 at speeds over 100 miles per hour before the fatal accident.A lawsuit filed against the City of San Diego claims, police officers failed “to act in accordance with the statute and carry out their mandatory duty,” and as a result, Heitmann, “subsequently and predictably endangered the lives of others and himself and drove his vehicle at speeds in excess of 100 mph, striking Aileen and Aryana Pizarro's vehicle and endangering other members of the public.”The lawsuit goes on to say, “Because he was not evaluated by defendants to determine if he was a danger to himself or others, he was able to carry on with his erratic and mentally unstable behavior, and ultimately colliding head-on with Aileen Lydia Pizarro's vehicle, and thereby, causing fatal injuries to Aileen and Aryana Pizarro." 1137

The Employment Development Department reported Friday that from April to May, employers added 18,200 people to their payrolls. Still, the employment situation in San Diego County is dire. From May 2019 to May 2020, payroll employment is still down by 195,800 workers. "The positive thing is that the worst is behind us and we've seen month over month job growth so we're improving," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. "The negative spin is that we're improving but the situation is still bad."The hard-hit restaurant industry led the way with 9,100 new jobs, as coronavirus related restrictions began to lift, allowing in-house dining with reduced capacity.Eric Adler, who co-founded the Artisan Mexican restaurant Puesto, said this year has been particularly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are searching for the man they say shot at two people in a Clairemont strip mall before fleeing in an SUV Wednesday morning.Police say a heavy-set Hispanic man shot at two men in the 5600 block of Balboa Ave. at about 9:30 a.m. The two men were standing near or were inside a red Ford Mustang, San Diego Police added.One of the victim fled the area on foot, while the other victim, a 21-year-old man, drove himself to a nearby urgent car facility. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the upper leg.The suspect was a passenger in a white GMC SUV that was being driven by a woman, SDPD said.
