BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday spoke over telephone with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush about bilateral relations and major international issues of common concern.     The two leaders exchanged congratulations on achievements that have been made in the development of bilateral relations since the forging of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. 30 years ago.     They expressed the hope that a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would be successful.     President Hu agreed with Bush's positive remarks on China-U.S. relations and hailed his efforts to develop a constructive and cooperative Sino-U.S. relationship.     In the new historical period of time, China and the United States, through their joint efforts, will surely be able to stay firm in the general direction of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relationship and promote sound, stable, all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Hu noted.     Bush, for his part, said China and the United States have engaged in good cooperation over the past 30 years which deserves congratulation.     The U.S. president said he was pleased that he has conducted satisfactory cooperation with President Hu during his presidency.     On the Middle East situation, Hu said China is seriously concerned about escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and worsening of the volatile situation in the Middle East and is deeply worried about the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Gaza Strip.     China calls on all the parties concerned to stop military operation and armed conflicts, promote the relaxation of tension in the region and create conditions for a solution to the conflict by political means, Hu said.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on Monday hailed China's achievements in promoting cultural and ethical progress in 2008 after some major events, including the May 12 earthquake and the Beijing Olympic Games.     In both events, China displayed its "national spirit and the spirit of the times", Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, told a plenary conference of the Central Commission for Guiding Ethic and Cultural Progress.     Li, who presided over the conference as the head of the commission, attributed the achievements to the staunch leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as general secretary.     Li called for efforts to build up the system of socialist core values and strengthen cultural and ethical progress so as to create a sound environment for "continuing ideological emancipation, persisting in the reform and opening up, promoting scientific development, and making new victories over building a well-off society in an all-round way."     In 2009, the development of ethical and cultural progress would focus on the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, he said.     He called for efforts to deal with moral, cultural and Internet-related problems and try to help youth to grow in a healthy way.     Li said the important role of boosting cultural and ethical progress was a common responsibility for the whole society.     Present at the conference were Liu Yunshan, member of both of the Political Bureau and Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and Liu Yandong, a Political Bureau member and state councilor. Both are deputy chairpersons of the central commission.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- "Our confidence to face the global financial crisis should rely on science, knowledge and talented people," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday.     He made the remark during a visit to Beijing-based Zhongguancun Science Park, known as China's Silicon Valley.     "I'm here to consult you on how to let science and technology play a good role for us to not only handle the current difficulties but lay a foundation for long-run development," said the premier. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- What China can do for the world is not to sell out its massive dollar reserve, but slightly increase its hold of the currency to give reasonable support to the U.S. effort to save its economy, said a senior economist here on Saturday.     It is indeed difficult for China to handle its huge forex reserve, as the U.S. currency has already depreciated 20 percent against the Chinese yuan, said Cheng Siwei, well-known economist at a financial forum held in Guangdong.     "China would suffer from losses if it sells off the dollar, so our strategy should be not to sell, but to slightly increase dollar reserve," said Cheng, also former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).     Cheng made the remarks amid increasing concern that China might use its forex reserve to finance its 4-trillion-yuan stimulus plan. China held 1.9 trillion dollars worth of forex reserve by September this year.     China "can only afford to do what is corresponding to its level of development and national power amid a global crisis," said Cheng.     "We should be prudent as to how to deal with our forex reserve," said Cheng, noting that China, despite its large size of economy, has its gross domestic product (GDP) accounting for only 6 percent of the world's total, and its per capita GDP ranking falling out of the top one hundred list.

   KUWAIT CITY, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang arrived here Saturday evening on a four-day official visit.     Li said in a statement delivered at the airport that he is delighted to pay an official visit to Kuwait, noting that the relationship between China and Kuwait, especially in the fields of trade, energy, finance and culture, has witnessed remarkable growth since the two forged diplomatic relations in 1971.
