SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Aug. 3, will mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.A free concert will be hosted at 6:30 p.m. at the Coronado Golf Course, featuring the local band "Ron's Garage." Construction began in February 1967 and two years later, then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan ushered in the iconic structure as the first person to cross over it.Instantly, it changed how San Diegans commuted, mostly replacing ferry service used to cross San Diego Bay for 83 years.The bridge's iconic curve across the bay reaches 200 feet at its highest point, allowing an aircraft carrier to pass underneath its five lanes.Just a few years after the bridge debuted, the Coronado Cays, Coronado Hospital, and Coronado Shores condo community opened and Richard Nixon hosted the first state dinner held outside of the White House at Hotel del Coronado. Not only was the bridge a vital asset to the military facilities on Coronado but also the residents -- on and off the island.Coronado City Councilman Bill Sandke said, “This bridge is an icon around San Diego. There’s no way around it.”Port of San Diego officials say the bridge has made it easier to connect the five cities around San Diego Bay.The Port has plans to install color-changing LED lights on the bridge within the next two years, adding to its iconic nature.“Certainly red, white and blue for the Fourth of July. These military working dogs are trained and trusted to protect service members and civilians overseas and at home."The bond between handler and K-9 is indescribable. When I was assigned a dog, I could look at my dog and know what it needed before it could tell me, and vice versa," said Lt. Kristopher Evers, part of the military police force at Camp Pendleton. All military dogs begin their journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, selected for their willingness to work. After basic training, they're sent to a new post and assigned a handler. K-9's trained in the Military Working Dog Program at Camp Pendleton go on to either serve alongside military police on the base or in conflicts overseas. The Marine Corps has nearly 300 working dogs; the entire military has about 2,700, according to the United States War Dogs Association, Inc. Handlers use the Agility Course at Camp Pendleton to train K-9 Marines to perform outside their comfort zone, giving them the confidence to do the job. Dogs are tasked with jobs like detecting explosives, narcotics, and apprehending suspects."Training is consistent, it's every day, and it's all the time," said Evers. Evers says the dogs are very much Marines and an important part of their military family. One of the most famous K-9 heroes is Lucca, remembered for leading 400 patrols with no human casualties on her watch. Lucca retired after losing her leg to an IED and passed away in 2018."They're special, in my mind, they're special. They love to work, they love coming to work, they love seeing their handler, they love getting in that patrol car, they love putting that collar on - and they're just always happy, these dogs live in the moment," said Evers. Orchard is in search of stability, but in a competitive job market, that search becomes more difficult. I think showing that at the top of their resume is really going to highlight and give you those extra buzzwords,” said Barara. Another way to make your resume stand out is including or obtaining certificates in your specific field of interest. If you see a job and say hey this describes all the skill sets I do, but it’s not how I’m marketing myself, that would be a great way to start,” said Ellison. Ellison also suggests job seekers ditch the fluff words to make room for things that matter. “If someone says they are a good communicator, a team player, a fast learner, those are things literally everyone says, so those things can be left off,” said Ellison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire.The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173
