Both the COVID-19 pandemic and conversations about race happening now are shining a light on mental health. One in five adults experience mental illness each year. Only one in three Black adults who need mental health care are getting it.The reasons range from socioeconomic disparities, like access to health insurance, to the stigma in the Black community around getting this care.Another issue, the latest numbers from the American Psychological Association show 4% of psychologists in the U.S. are Black.“You know, I think a lot of these guys, they've been going to the same barber since they were 5 years old or maybe only went to a couple of barbers in their whole life and so it's their relationship,” said Lorenzo Lewis, founder of The Confess Project, which trains barbers to become mental health advocates. That training includes learning active listening, positive communication, validation and stigma reduction.Lewis says the barbershop is a good place for this because it's really the only place in the Black community, besides the church, where everyone from all socioeconomic backgrounds come. And they visit more frequently than they would their own doctor. He says he recognized the need for mental health help among black men, but saw it wasn't accessible to them.He is hearing conversations in barbershops change especially now with the issues the Black community is facing.“I think, if nothing else, it is more of a preparation conversation around life success and what in which we know when individuals are successful in life, career, health and their relationships, that they will have a quality mental health,” said Lewis. The mental health training for barbers is being offered in some cities in person, or you can take the virtual course. Best Buy informed its employees on Wednesday of plans to close all 250 of its mobile standalone stores in the United States by the end of May, a company spokesperson confirmed. The stores are predominately located within malls and are much smaller than Best Buy's big box stores. The mobile standalone shops are mostly used for the sale of cellphones and accessories. These locations do not sell some of Best Buy's bigger ticket items such as televisions, computers and appliances. The standalone stores are only responsible for 1 percent of Best Buy's overall revenue.Although thousands of employees will be affected by Wednesday's announcement, the company said the goal is to transfer employees currently working in standalone stores into Best Buy's big box locations. Best Buy said that 85 percent of its standalone stores are within 3 miles of a big box store. "Employees will have three months to work with internal recruiters, and field and store leaders across the country are rallying to help transition employees to big box stores and open in-home advisor roles," Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly wrote in a letter to employees, and shared with Scripps. "For those who leave the company after May 31, we will give them severance and assist them in finding roles outside Best Buy."Despite Best Buy closing its mall locations, the big box stores will continue selling cellphones and accessories. "We feel good about the opportunity to retain customers and transition them to another one of our sales channels. In summary, we are very excited by our Mobile business and its prospects for growth," Joly wrote.  1666

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo police have charged a woman with felony reckless endangerment and reckless driving for allegedly hitting a Niagara Square protester with a truck Wednesday night. The driver has been identified as 25-year-old Joanna Gollnau.Slow Roll Buffalo says 59-year-old Karen Huffman, who is a member of their board, was the person hit by Gollnau during those protests in downtown Buffalo.Protesters were rallying against racial injustice and eyewitnesses tell WKBW that the driver of the truck was shouting at protesters as she drove into the crowd.WKBW was at the scene at the time. A video of the incident can be found below, WARNING it is graphic. 671

Before he crashed and died, the airline worker who stole and flew a passenger plane in the Seattle area Friday had a wide-ranging discussion with air traffic control -- at one point expressing confidence in his flying ability because "I've played some video games."In audio recordings posted on Broadcastify, the man can be heard both resisting and seeking help as a controller and others tried to guide the otherwise unoccupied Horizon Air plane to a landing. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department described the man as suicidal but did not elaborate. At times he was apologetic, expressed his desire to fly toward the nearby Olympic Mountains, worried about lightheadedness and expressed shock at his fuel level's rapid decrease. 738

BALTIMORE — Social media ads are designed to sell consumers on products they're already interested in, but be careful about ordering from unfamiliar websites.Queen Shaydonna Haynesworth was served up an ad for a rainbow Christmas tree on Instagram, and she jumped at it. A few weeks later, her package arrived. In a video she recorded while opening the package, Haynesworth was baffled when she realized the tree she got in the mail looked nothing like the ad she was served."Like seriously? Who is responsible for this?" she said.Haynesworth ordered the tree from a website called Iridescent To You, but the payment was processed by Yokawa Network Limited."So I love rainbow everything, and so I'm like okay, a rainbow Christmas tree, why not? This should be fun," Haynesworth said. That is, until a feather duster lookalike arrived in the mail."Yo! It's missing a leg!" Haynesworth said in her unboxing video. "The worst thing I've ever seen in my whole life."She didn't try contacting the company or returning the item — she figured it was a lesson learned.Angie Barnett, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in greater Maryland, said that's what creators of fake websites hope will happen."The scammer or the schemer clearly made a profit. Most of these items are made overseas, so to return the item you'd actually have to ship to China or ship to an outside country and the cost is going to be phenomenal," Barnett said. Before ordering anything from social media ads or unfamiliar sites, look at the contact page. If there is no business address listed, that's a red flag. If there is an address, Google the address to see if it exists. Call the phone number to see if it works. Send an email and wait for a response. And use a credit card when shopping online. While it's nothing close to what she ordered, Haynesworth said she's keeping the tree."I'm determined now," she said. "Like, it's mine. I might as well. I'm going to get the ornaments I was going to put on it. Now, I'm defiant. I'm getting that tree up."This story was originally published by Mallory Sofastaii on WMAR in Baltimore. 2120
