SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 has brought us stories of loss, heartache, and despair. But we've also seen humanity pull together in acts of service and sacrifice.For RN Ana Wilkinson it's a calling born from her childhood, a past not without pain.When Wilkinson arrived in New York City in the midst of the pandemic. She was unprepared for what she witnessed. Put on the floor that night, Wilkinson was given 15 COVID patients. Despite all her efforts, she would lose 8 patients that night. While she says some nurses quit the next day, she decided to stay and "just be Ana." For Ana that meant an unorthodox approach to the sickest patients. She would smile, hold their hands, and dance.Behind her mask of optimism were a lifetime of pain, loss, and sorrow. Something she tries to make better for her patients and their families.At around three years old Ana and her family immigrated to the U.S from Nicaragua as refugees. Childhood was difficult. Her mother's alcoholism would lead to abuse. Abuse and neglect would lead to Ana being put in a foster home. Some days she went to school with bruises.All this Ana says makes her see things differently. She believes it helps her to be more compassionate as a nurse. She is now happily married to a firefighter and has two young boys but volunteering to provide medical care where it's needed is an important part of her life. Whether it's New York City or other countries around the world, Wilkinson answers the call. Always ready to be there in a patient's darkest hours... hoping just maybe her smile can bring light.As part of this story Hunt interviewed Del Mar Clinical Psychologist, and international personality expert, Dr. Richard Levak. Levak has been tasked by American television series such as Survivor, Apprentice, and The Amazing Race to analyze personalities to determine capable candidates and group dynamics. Dr. Levak has never worked with Wilkinson but provided research and analysis. He said the most important thing for all hospitalized COVID patients is not to feel alone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Approximately 900,000 San Diegans who pay for sewer services may have had their rights violated.It’s part of what being alleged in a massive new class action lawsuit against the City of San Diego, its Public Utilities Department and the San Diego City Council.The suit calls it an “illegal financing scheme”. Attorneys who brought the suit claim the issue surrounds the city’s million smart water meter system and how it was paid for.  The lawsuit alleges the city knowingly used about million from the city's sewer fund instead of the city's water fund to help pay for that meter system.Subsequently, hundreds of thousands of San Diego sewer ratepayers were allegedly misinformed about what their money was being used for. Attorneys argue sewer ratepayers were quite possibly paying for a system that they did not necessarily benefit from- the smart water meter system. It’s still unknown whether there were any rate hikes directly tied to this.The suit claims the situation was an unconstitutional grab of million in funds.The San Diego City Attorney’s Office is reviewing the complaint and will respond through the court. 1183

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing.The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of SR-163 closures throughout the week. According to the agency, all lanes of north and southbound SR-163 between I-8 and Genesee Avenue for three to six nights. The highway will be closed so crews can remove falsework from the bridge on the SR-163 Friars Road overcrossing. The southbound closures will begin at 11 p.m. with the northbound closures starting at 11:30 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. The list below shows which lanes will be closed on certain nights: Sunday: All southbound lanes, the northbound far right collector lane and the right main lane (slow lane).Monday: No full freeway closure. Only the northbound and southbound right main lanes.Tuesday: All southbound lanes, and the northbound left lane (fast lane).Wednesday: All northbound lanes, and the southbound left lane.Thursday: No full freeway closures. Only the northbound right lane.Friday/Saturday: No freeway work scheduledSunday, March 10: All northbound lanes. During the closures, drivers on the northbound SR-163 will be rerouted to eastbound I-8 to northbound I-805 to the merge at northbound SR-163.Southbound motorists will be rerouted to southbound I-805 to westbound I-8 to the southbound SR-163 connector ramp. 1274
